Chapter 1
The Blood in the Rain
Pain is a liar. It tells you that you are alive, but most days in Neo-Chicago, pain just means you are taking too long to die.
I press my hand hard against my side, trying to stop the warm, wet blood from soaking through my jacket. The dirty water in the alley smells like old trash and bad oil, but I do not care. I just need to breathe. My lungs burn. Every breath feels like swallowing broken glass.
Eighteen years ago, the city pack murdered my parents in cold blood. They left me behind like trash in the slums, expecting me to starve or freeze. Instead, I learned how to hide. I learned how to buy cheap black-market medicine from street pushers just to keep my heartbeat steady. I thought if I stayed invisible, if I kept my head down, I would live to see tomorrow.
I was wrong.
Footsteps echo behind me. Heavy boots splash in the dirty puddles. The sound is steady, cold, and entirely unafraid. No one walks through this part of the slums with that kind of confidence unless they own the streets.
My heart leaps into my throat. I push my back deeper against the cold brick wall behind the dumpster, holding my breath. If they find me, this is the end. There is no running left. My legs shake, and my vision blurs at the edges, gray and fuzzy.
A tall figure steps out from the shadows of the neon-lit main street, blocking the narrow exit of the alley. The pink and green light from a broken sign overhead paints his face in sickly colors.
It is Zara.
He looks entirely out of place here. His clothes are clean, expensive, and untouched by the grime of the slums. He has the easy, dangerous grace of a predator who knows the hunt is already over. A golden boy from the ruling pack, walking through the dirt like he owns the earth. And worse, he is looking straight at me.
"Found you, Simeon," Zara says. His voice is smooth, calm, and entirely dead inside.
I press my back harder against the bricks. My fingers scrape against the rough wall. "Leave me alone, Zara. I do not have anything. I am nobody."
Zara chuckles. It is a dry, quiet sound that makes the hair on my arms stand up. He takes a slow step closer, his boots splashing in the water. "That is where you are wrong, little ghost. You are not a nobody. You are the only loose end left in this city."
Before I can push away from the wall, Zara moves. He is too fast.
He steps into my space, his hand flashing out with terrifying speed. Something cold and sharp catches the neon light.
A silver blade.
I try to twist away, but my body is too weak from days of hunger and pain. The knife drives straight down into my chest, right over my ribs.
The shock of the cold metal hits me first. Then comes the fire.
A sharp, breathless gasp tears out of my throat. My eyes go wide as I look down. The silver blade is buried deep inside me, right up to the handle. The pain is so massive, so blinding, that it steals every thought from my head. I cannot breathe. I cannot move.
Zara leans in close, his face inches from mine. His eyes hold no pity, only cold satisfaction. "Your parents should have died with you," he says softly.
He lets go of the handle and steps back, leaving the silver blade buried in my chest.
My knees give out. I slide down the wet brick wall, tumbling into the dirty water of the alley. The cold mud rises up to meet me, but I do not feel it anymore. The world starts to tilt sideways. The bright neon signs above start to blur into long streaks of pink and green.
I am dying. I can feel my life leaking out into the dirt.
So this is it, I think. This is how it ends.
My eyes flutter shut as the darkness rushes in to swallow me whole. The cold takes over my fingers, then my arms, then my chest. I wait for the final quiet. I wait for the end.
Instead, something inside me snaps.
It starts deep in my stomach, like a tiny spark of heat. But it does not stay small. In less than a second, the spark turns into a roaring wall of flame. It is not red or orange like normal fire. It is black. A deep, heavy, terrifying black fire that burns with a cold, violent fury.
My eyes snap open.
The pain in my chest vanishes, replaced by a sudden surge of raw, terrifying energy that floods my veins. My heart does not hammer anymore; it pounds like a heavy war drum.
I push myself up off the ground.
Zara stops walking away. He turns around, his arrogant smile instantly vanishing from his face. His eyes go wide as he stares at me.
The silver blade is still stuck in my chest, but the metal is melting. The silver turns red, then white, and then drips down onto the wet pavement like hot wax before turning into ash. Smoke rises from my jacket, smelling of old ozone and ash. When I look down at my hands, my skin is glowing with twisting lines of dark, burning light.
"What... what are you?" Zara stammers, taking a hesitant step back. His voice is not calm anymore. It shakes.
I do not answer him. My throat feels dry, and my mind is racing with a strange, heavy hunger. I take a step forward, the mud hissing beneath my boots as the heat rolls off my skin in waves.
Before I can reach him, heavy footsteps echo from the other end of the alley.
I whip my head around.
Another figure steps out from the shadows, blocking the opposite exit. I blink through the smoke, trying to focus my eyes.
It is Ifeoma.
Relief crashes through me for a split second. Ifeoma is my best friend. We have shared stale bread, hidden from pack enforcers, and watched each other's backs through the worst slums of Neo-Chicago.
"Ifeoma!" I call out, my voice sounding harsh and strange, like grinding stones. "Get out of here! It is not safe!"
She does not run to me. She does not look worried.
Instead, Ifeoma stops under the flickering neon light. Her face is completely blank. She slowly reaches up, grabs the zipper of her worn leather jacket, and pulls it down. She shrugs the jacket off her shoulders and lets it drop into the dirty water.
Underneath, she is wearing a heavy black uniform bearing the crest of the ruling pack, the exact symbol of the monsters who killed my parents.
My breath catches in my throat. The world tilts again, but this time it has nothing to do with the knife.
"Sorry, Simeon," Ifeoma says, her voice completely flat and cold, sounding like a stranger. "Orders are orders. We needed to see if the fire was real."
I stare at her, my mind refusing to accept what my eyes are seeing. Every laugh we shared, every secret we told each other, every moment of trust, was it all a lie?
Before I can even process the betrayal, a loud click echoes down the narrow alley.
I snap my head toward the shadows again.
A tall man steps out from behind a stack of rusted metal crates. He wears a heavy trench coat, and his face is scarred and half-hidden in the shadows. But I would know that face anywhere. I used to stare at his picture every single day before I learned how to bury my grief.
It is Uncle Kanmi.
The man who supposedly died in the fire eighteen years ago. The man whose ghost I have mourned my entire life.
Kanmi raises a heavy, black handgun, pointing the barrel straight at my chest. A cruel, sharp smile spreads across his face.
"Good job bringing him out into the open, Ifeoma," Kanmi says, his voice deep and mocking. "I have waited eighteen years to take back what is mine."
I stare at my uncle, my chest burning with the black fire, my best friend standing with the enemy, and the ghost of my past holding a gun.
Before I can speak, Zara starts to laugh. It is a loud, ringing sound that echoes off the brick walls.
Zara points a finger at Kanmi and smiles wide. "Did you really think it was that easy, old man? You should check who you are working for."
Kanmi’s smile falters. His hand holding the gun trembles just a fraction.
Zara steps closer to Kanmi, his arrogant grin returning. "We knew you were hiding all these years, Kanmi. We just needed a corpse to trick the system. That body we found eighteen years ago? Completely fake. We set up this entire alley, this entire night, just to trap the last two rats in one place."
My head spins. The walls of the alley seem to tilt and bend.
Zara looks back at me, his eyes gleaming with dark amusement. "Wake up, Simeon. Nothing you remember is real. Your entire life was built just to trap the king."
Suddenly, the brick walls around us begin to flicker.
The pink and green neon signs buzz loudly, throwing violent flashes of light across the alley. The air starts to hum with a strange, high-pitched noise, like a television losing its signal.
I reach out a hand toward Zara, the black fire blazing brighter on my skin.
Then, the entire world cracks right down the middle like a broken computer screen, shattering into a million glowing pieces.

The Boy in the Alley Beyond the Glass Wall
A giant digital eye stares down from the fractured sky, blinking with cold white light.I do not look away. The glass window behind Kanmi shatters completely, blowing sharp pieces across the floor as the wind from the outside world rushes in. The city of Neo-Chicago is folding up like paper, turning into long lines of green computer code that drift away into nothingness.Kanmi stumbles back against the main console, his face pale and twisted in disbelief. The digital eye in the sky pulses with a deep, rhythmic hum that vibrates right through my chest."You are too late, Simeon," Kanmi says, coughing as he tries to stand straight. "That eye is not part of the simulation. It is the outer overseer. The moment the simulation crashes, the real world firewall activates. You cannot escape a cage if the entire planet is a prison."Ifeoma steps up beside me, her expression completely calm despite the chaos. She looks at the giant eye in the sky, then down at the data drive in her hand. Her fin

The Boy in the Alley The Final Code
A bullet passes through the glass window behind us before the sound of the shot even reaches my ears.I pull Ifeoma down behind a heavy steel computer console as a second round shatters a monitor into a million pieces. The air in the upper tower smells like ozone and hot plastic. Alarms wail through the massive control room, flashing bright red light across the polished floor.Kanmi stands near the center console, his face calm and cold. He holds the digital control pad in one hand while a dozen heavy security drones fly out from hidden ceiling slots, locking their red laser sights directly onto our chests."You broke through the lift, Simeon," Kanmi says, his deep voice carrying easily over the blaring alarms. "I am actually impressed. But you walked straight into a cage."I look down at my hands. The black fire is still there, burning hot and steady under my skin, but I know brute force will not save us from a dozen armed drones. If we move the wrong way, we turn to ash before we ca

The Boy in the Alley The Master Purge
Three minutes. That is all the time we have before Kanmi erases everything. The small red screen on Zara's communicator blinks faster, ticking down the seconds like a tiny bomb. The air in the underground station suddenly feels heavy and thin. Around us, the yellow emergency lights begin to flicker and die, replaced by a harsh, blinding crimson strobe.Zara laughs, coughing up a little blood as he tries to sit up against the metal crate. "You think you won, Simeon? Kanmi does not care about me, and he certainly does not care about this station. The master purge will wipe every file, every server, and every person down here into nothingness."I grab him by the collar of his torn lab coat and haul him straight up to his feet. My hands glow with hot black fire, casting sharp shadows across his pale face."Stop laughing and tell me how to stop the purge," I demand, my voice hard enough to break stone.Zara’s eyes dart to the blinking screen, then back to me. A reckless, desperate grin spr

The Boy in the Alley The Trap Closes
A bullet strikes the concrete right between my feet, spraying sharp stone chips against my legs.I dive behind a overturned train car, dragging Ifeoma down with me just as a storm of energy rounds tears through the air above our heads. The red emergency lights spin lazily against the damp concrete walls, casting long, frantic shadows across the underground station."They tracked our signal through the drainage pipe," Ifeoma says, her voice low and steady. She pulls a small, modified data tool from her pocket, her fingers moving fast over the glass screen. "Kade, how many exits does this station have?"Kade crouches beside us, reloading his heavy plasma rifle with a sharp metallic click. "Only two. The main tunnel we came through, and an old maintenance shaft on the far side. But the enforcers are already blocking both."I look out from behind the metal barrier. Zara stands near the front of the enforcer line, his white lab coat stained with soot and rain. He does not look like a calm
