BLURB Caleb Lane gave everything to the woman he loved. His money. His company. His whole life. And she repaid him with poison. “I was never your childhood sweetheart,” Brielle whispered, watching him bleed. “Mason told me every detail of your little love story, and I played the part perfectly.” In his final moments, Caleb spotted a matching pendant on the one woman who actually fought for him. Ava Cross. His real soulmate. Dead on the ground because of him. Then he woke up. Three months before the apocalypse. Three months before the world burns. Armed with a mysterious trading system, a hidden pocket dimension, and the burning memory of everyone who betrayed him, Caleb has one mission. Find Ava. Protect the people who matter. And make sure Brielle and Mason never survive to see the new world. “There’s not going to be an engagement,” Caleb told his best friend. “Not tonight. Not ever. I’m done with Brielle.” This time, he knows exactly who to trust, who to destroy, and how the world ends. This time, the apocalypse plays by his rules.

Chapter 1

The wasteland stretched in every direction, gray and dead and endless. Caleb Lane dragged himself forward on his knees, his wrists bound behind his back with rusted wire that cut deeper every time he moved. Blood dripped from the stumps where two of his fingers used to be. The pain was blinding, but it was nothing compared to what he was watching.

Ava Cross stood alone in the middle of the clearing, surrounded by three zombies. She had already killed the Level Five. Its massive body lay crumpled behind her, skull caved in from the final blow of her ice blade. But the fight had drained everything she had. Her Level Four reserves were completely empty. Her legs were shaking so badly she could barely stand.

"Ava, run!" Caleb screamed until his throat tore. "Get out of here! Leave me!"

She turned to look at him, and even through the blood and dirt covering her face, she smiled. That soft, quiet smile that always made his chest ache.

"You know I'm not going to do that." Her voice was calm, like she had already made peace with what was coming.

The zombie behind her moved fast. Too fast. Its clawed hand punched straight through her back and out through her chest. Ava's eyes went wide. Blood poured from her mouth in a thick stream, and her knees buckled.

Caleb lost his mind.

He ripped his arms apart with a strength he did not know he still had. The wire tore through skin and muscle, but he was already running. He caught her before she hit the ground and pulled her into his lap, pressing his hand over the wound like he could hold her together.

"No, no, no. Stay with me." His voice cracked into pieces. "I can heal you. Just hold on."

He tried to activate his Wood Elemental Ability, tried to push even the smallest thread of healing energy into her body. But there was nothing left. His power was completely gone. His fingers were gone. He had nothing to give her.

"Caleb." Ava's voice was barely a whisper now. Blood bubbled at the corner of her lips. "Stop wasting your energy. It's over."

"It's not over. Don't you dare give up on me." Tears fell from his face onto hers, cutting clean trails through the grime on her cheeks.

She lifted her hand and tried to touch his face. Her fingers brushed his jaw for just a second before the strength left her completely and her arm dropped to the dirt.

The vine bracelet on her wrist snapped. The tiny sound echoed louder than any explosion Caleb had ever heard.

"We never got to see the aurora." Ava's lips moved, but almost no sound came out. "You promised me."

"I'll take you there. I swear I will. Just stay awake." He pressed his forehead against hers, shaking so hard his teeth rattled. "Ava, please. I love you. I've always loved you. Don't leave me here."

Her eyes found his one last time. Something soft passed through them. Then the light faded, and she was gone.

Caleb held her body and screamed into the dead sky until his voice broke completely.

He did not know how long he sat there. Minutes. Hours. It did not matter. Nothing mattered anymore.

The sound of slow, deliberate clapping pulled him back.

Brielle Slade walked out from behind a collapsed wall where she had been hiding the entire time. Her hair was pulled back in a tight ponytail, and her lips curved into a smile so cold it could have frozen the air between them. Behind her, Mason followed with his hands in his pockets and a lazy grin on his face.

"Well, that was touching." Brielle's voice dripped with amusement as she looked down at Ava's body in Caleb's arms. "Really, Caleb. I didn't think you had it in you. Crying over another woman right in front of your wife?"

"You did this." Caleb's voice was raw and hollow. "You set this whole thing up."

"Of course I did." Brielle crouched down to his level, tilting her head like she was studying a bug. "Did you really think I was going to let you walk away from me? You and your precious Level Four Wood stones? Those abilities belong to my base. They belong to me."

"You drugged me." Caleb's jaw tightened until his teeth cracked. "You put something in my water to kill my abilities. Then you dragged me out here and lured those things to us just so you could strip my crystal stones."

"And it would have worked perfectly if that little girlfriend of yours hadn't shown up to play hero." Brielle glanced at Ava's body with open disgust, her upper lip curling. "What a complete waste of life."

Mason stepped closer, looking down at Caleb with the same expression a kid would give a broken toy.

"You know, big brother, I tried to warn you. I told you years ago that trusting people would only get you hurt. But you never listen."

"I raised you." Caleb's voice shook with barely contained fury. "I paid for your school. I paid for your apartment. I gave you a job at my company when nobody else would touch you."

"And I'm grateful. Truly." Mason pressed his hand over his heart in mock sincerity, his lips twitching with amusement. "But gratitude doesn't pay the bills the way your crystal stones do."

Brielle stood back up and brushed dust from her knees with a delicate flick of her wrist.

"Let me tell you something, Caleb. Something I should have told you a long time ago."

She leaned in close enough that he could smell her perfume, somehow still intact even in the apocalypse.

"I was never your childhood sweetheart." Her whisper was slow and deliberate, each word placed like a knife. "That sweet girl you spent years looking for? The one you thought you found when you met me? She never existed. Mason told me every detail of your little love story, and I played the part perfectly."

Caleb felt the blood drain from his face.

"You're lying."

"Am I?" Brielle straightened up and crossed her arms, her expression bored. "Think about it. Every memory you thought we shared, every detail I knew about your past. Mason fed me all of it. Your company was failing when we met. You needed someone who understood you, someone who felt like home. So I became that person. And you were so desperate to believe it was real that you handed me everything. Your money. Your business. Your entire life."

The words hit him harder than any zombie ever could. His whole body went numb.

"Oh, and one more thing." Mason pulled something from his jacket pocket. A small glass vial, empty now. "We gave you something special about an hour ago. Mixed it into the water Brielle offered you before the ambush."

"What did you give me?" Caleb's stomach turned to ice.

"An experimental plant-based toxin." Mason twirled the empty vial between his fingers with a casual smile. "Developed right here at the base by some very creative scientists. It burns your internal organs from the inside out while leaving your skin completely untouched. By the time you feel it, the damage is already done."

As if on cue, a searing heat erupted deep in Caleb's gut. It spread like wildfire through his chest, up his throat, down into his legs. Every organ inside him felt like it was being cooked alive.

"There it is." Brielle watched his face twist in agony with the calm fascination of someone watching a campfire. "Beautiful, isn't it? No marks. No evidence. Just a slow, clean death."

Caleb doubled over, clutching his stomach. Blood surged up his throat and spilled from his mouth in a violent cough. His vision blurred. The pain was beyond anything he had ever experienced, worse than losing his fingers, worse than watching Ava die.

"You two deserve each other." Caleb forced the words out between convulsions of blood. His eyes burned with tears and fury as he looked up at them one last time.

Brielle waved her fingers at him in a little goodbye. Mason just shrugged.

Overcome by the excruciating internal burning and overwhelming anguish, Caleb coughed up blood and collapsed to the ground.
