Inside, something quiet and satisfied settled behind his chest. By the time anyone came looking for that remaining balance, the world outside would be unrecognizable, and Edmondo Ricci would have far bigger problems than a delayed payment.
He signed the paperwork, shook hands, and walked back out into the afternoon sun.
The city's largest wholesale distribution center sat on the edge of the industrial quarter, a warehouse complex the size of four city blocks that supplied restaurants, hospitals, and emergency services. Marco had called ahead and arranged a commercial account that morning.
He spent the next four hours walking the aisles with a printed list that covered both sides of three pages. Non perishable food, sealed in bulk quantities. Water purification tablets. Medical supplies. Seeds for every fast growing vegetable he could identify. Fuel containers. Generators. Tools.
The floor supervisor, a tired looking man named Giulio, followed Marco through the third aisle with a clipboard and an expression that kept shifting between professional calm and barely concealed shock.
"Sir, this is... this is an extraordinary order." Giulio flipped through his clipboard pages, his pen moving in short, rapid strokes. "We are talking about over one million euros in total purchases."
"Yes." Marco picked up a case of sealed grain packs and set it on the flatbed cart without pausing. "I need everything loaded and delivered to this address by end of day Thursday."
Giulio blinked. Then he nodded rapidly, already reaching for his radio.
By the time Marco signed the final delivery confirmation at the checkout desk, a notification hummed softly through his phone and directly into his mind.
FIRST MISSION COMPLETED.
REWARD: COMPREHENSIVE PHYSICAL ENHANCEMENT.
Marco flexed his hand slowly as he walked out toward the parking lot. The difference was subtle but unmistakable, like a dial inside his body had been quietly turned up a few notches. His steps felt steadier, his lungs fuller, his eyes sharper against the afternoon glare.
He allowed himself one small, private smile.
He did not notice the silver sedan parked across the street from the wholesale center entrance, or the woman sitting in the passenger seat with her phone raised, recording every delivery truck being loaded through the zoom lens of her camera.
Valentina lowered her phone slowly, her eyes fixed on the warehouse doors, her mind turning over what she had just spent the last two hours watching.
She had followed Marco on impulse after leaving the café, still shaking with fury and humiliation, half expecting to catch him walking back to some cheap apartment to eat leftovers alone. Instead, she had watched him walk into Ferro Sicuro and come out thirty minutes later looking satisfied. She had followed him here next and sat in stunned silence while flatbed cart after flatbed cart was loaded and tagged for delivery.
She called Bianca before the last truck had even finished loading.
"He's been hiding money." Her voice was tight and electric with barely contained excitement. "The whole marriage. Bianca, he spent more today than I have ever seen in my life."
Bianca's intake of breath was sharp on the other end of the line.
"How much?" Her voice came out careful and hungry at the same time.
"Over a million euros. Maybe more." Valentina gripped her phone tighter, leaning forward in her seat. "He lied about everything. He's been hiding income this whole time, and now we can prove it."
A long pause stretched across the line, and then Bianca's voice came back transformed, bright and trembling with something close to triumph.
"Valentina." The word landed slow and deliberate. "Do you understand what this means? If I can bring this into court, if I can prove concealed assets in front of a judge..." She let out a short, breathless laugh. "I would beat Professor Acerbi at his own game. I would be the most talked about lawyer in the country."
Valentina smiled for the first time since leaving Caffè Rinaldi, her eyes still fixed on the warehouse entrance across the street.
"Then let's make sure we bury him."

Chapter 12: Teach them a lesson
Giorgia followed his gaze. She had been watching the group since they walked in, and the tight line that had appeared at the corner of her mouth when they arrived had not gone away."Consider it handled." She turned away from the table with the smooth efficiency of someone who had been waiting for a reason to do exactly this. She crossed the dining room and spoke quietly to two members of the floor staff. Both nodded. Both moved toward the Benedetti family with polite but unmistakable purpose."I'm sorry to inform you," the senior waiter said, his voice carrying just enough to be heard without being shouted, "but we are unable to seat your party this evening. We ask that you please make your way to the exit."Sergio's face went red immediately."Excuse me?" He squared his shoulders, his voice jumping back up to the volume the whole room could hear. "We just got here! We haven't even ordered yet! On what grounds?""Please lower your voice, sir.""Don't tell me to lower my voice! Who ga
Chapter 11: Kicked Out
The Benedetti family arrived at Il Cielo Stellato the way a pack of stray dogs arrives at a quiet park, loud, disruptive, and completely unaware of how badly they did not belong there.Sergio pushed through the glass doors first with his chest out, Rosa immediately behind him, her eyes sweeping the dining room with the hungry, overwhelmed expression of someone who had never been anywhere this nice and was trying very hard not to show it. Lorenzo had his arm around Valentina, and Valentina was already talking at full volume about what she planned to order. The other diners, lawyers, executives, a retired judge near the back window, turned their heads one by one as the noise level in the room climbed.A senior waiter moved toward them quickly, his smile professional and tight."Good evening. If you'd like to be seated, I'll need you to lower your voices a little. Our other guests appreciate a quieter atmosphere."Sergio's eyes narrowed. He was not used to being told what to do by someon
Chapter 10: The Supreme Member
Marco had spent the last three days surrounded by blueprints, delivery schedules, and legal documents. He had earned one quiet evening, and he intended to use it properly. He pulled up the address for Il Cielo Stellato on his phone and walked through the city with his hands loose at his sides, wearing the same clean but unremarkable jacket he had owned for two years. He had never cared much about clothing before, and dying once had not changed that. The restaurant entrance was all warm gold light and heavy glass doors, the kind of place that made people straighten their posture just walking toward it.A young waiter stepped into Marco's path before he could reach the host stand, his chin lifting slightly, his eyes making a quick sweep of Marco's jacket and worn shoes with the practiced efficiency of someone paid to keep the wrong people out."Good evening, sir." His voice was smooth but had a wall behind it. "Do you have a reservation? I'm afraid our wait times tonight are quite long,
Chapter 9: Greedy family
The apartment her parents had moved into after Marco asked them to leave was forty square meters of cramped misery, a place Valentina had grown up in and spent her entire adult life trying to escape. Two small rooms, a kitchen barely big enough to turn around in, and a window that looked directly into the wall of the next building. Her parents and Lorenzo were squeezed around the kitchen table eating leftovers when Valentina walked in, still flushed and breathless."Put the food down." She dropped her bag on the counter, looking at all three of them. "I have something to tell you."Sergio looked up with a scowl, a fork halfway to his mouth."What now? Did that lawyer eat you alive already?""Shut up and listen to me." Valentina pulled out a chair and sat, planting both hands flat on the table. "Marco has been hiding money. A lot of money. He spent over a million today at a wholesale warehouse and at Ferro Sicuro."Rosa's fork clinked against her plate."How much are we talking?" Her v
Chapter 8: Fifty Million Dreams
Marco had no idea any of it was happening. He was sitting at his kitchen table with a folder of documents spread in front of him, going through the last set of evidence he needed to hand over to Professor Acerbi before the week was out. Bank records, receipts, transaction histories, all of it organized and clearly labeled. He slid the folder into an envelope, sealed it, and set it aside for morning delivery. Then he went back to reviewing the shelter blueprints.Across the city, in a cramped apartment that smelled of old cooking and stale cigarettes, Valentina was pacing."There has to be a way to find out exactly how much he has." She turned at the window and paced back the other direction, her arms crossed tight over her chest. "We know he spent over a million today alone. That means there's more. A lot more."Bianca sat on the edge of the couch, already thinking three steps ahead, her fingers tapping against her knee."I might be able to help with that." Her voice turned slow and d
