Clara stared at the phone her hand with a shocked expression on her face. Divorce. The word seem to hang in the antiseptic hospital air, sucking all the oxygen from her lungs. For ten full seconds, she stood completely shocked as she held the phone frozen in her hands. The ever predictable support of Dante’s unwavering boring presence had just crumbed to dust, leaving her totally shaken at the edge of a decision that was totally unplanned.

“Clara?” Mason whispered soothingly and placed his hand possessively on her arm. “What did he say? Is he coming? Will he do the transfusion for Jasper?”

The question was all that was needed to bring her back from her trance. The numbness in her blood quickly transformed into rage. Dante had not just refused her, he had declared war to the new life she was building.

“He is not coming,” she hissed and squeezed her phone tightly, then she spun around to face Mason with her eyes red in anger. “He actually had the balls to hang up on me. To scream that h

Mason did not bother to knock. He entered the dimly lit room silently to find Dante exactly where he knew he would be….slumped backwards in a chair beside the glass medical pod that held his daughter, looking like a ghost of his former self. “Dante,” Mason began calmly, with his voice thick with false sympathy. “Look at you. The great scientist. I heard you were once brilliant. A chief scientist. Now you are just…a watchman.”Dante did not move. He fixed his eyes on the pod and snarled, “Get out.”“I came to offer my condolences. Truly.” Mason stepped closer with his eyes fixed on the sleeping child in the pod, and sneered, “Such a pity. All that potential, gone. And for what?”“Cut the act, Mason,” Dante snapped coldly. “We are past that.”Finally, Dante turned his head to glare at Mason with his eyes reddened with pain, and seethed, “Was it not you who stole the Diathystine?” He pointed at the lifeless pod. “Now look at this. Who exactly are you trying to impress with this concerne

  • CHAPTER 7

The ICU was like a hall of humming machines and beeping noises that sounded judgmental. In the middle of it all, enclosed inside the clear shell of a medical pod, lay Daisy. She was so small, so pale that she seem to be fading into the sterile white sheets. The only signs of life from her, were the faint ghostly mist of her breath, fogging the glass, and the bent, weak line that is tracing a path across the heart monitor. Each soft, mechanical hiss was like a countdown. Dante stood, towering over her, with his hands pressed against the pod’s cold surface as if he could transfer his own warmth, his own life force, through the glass. A silent cry of self blame echoed consistently in his skull, and it was so loud that he was surprised the glass did not crack. ‘This is my fault. I left her side. I failed her.’The doors swung open suddenly and Doctor Alice strode in, looking furious, which is so unlike her usual calm, professional demeanor. She did not look at him, instead, she ignored h

  • CHAPTER 6

The door to the hospital room clicked shut, sealing them in silence. Dante stood for a moment, as his forehead aches, with his back to his daughter. He took a deep, shuddering breath, trying to organize his emotions…to breathe.“Daddy?” A small whimper came from the bed.He turned to see Daisy sitting up, with her little shoulders shaking, with tears streaming down her pale cheeks. “I am….I am sorry,” she sobbed with each hiccup. “It is my fault.”Dante rushed to her side and said soothingly, “Oh, sweetheart, no. What are you talking about? Nothing is your fault.”“It is!” She cried, her voice thick with a guilt that shattered him. “Because of me…you and mommy had a fight. And….and mommy hit you. I am a bad bad child. I made everyone angry.”The ache in Dante’s heart was now like a physical pain. He gathered her into his arms and held her tiny, trembling body close. “Daisy Vance, you listen to me,” he said, his voice firm but gentle. “You are not a bad child. You are the sweetest, kin

The air in the garden was thick with the aftermath of the slap. The sound still seem to be echoing, like a lingering buzz in the silence. Daisy’s soft, heartbroken sobs was the only sound in the air, as she massaged her swollen cheek.Mason, realizing Clara might have heard more that he had intended, quickly slipped into the role of a peacemaker and murmured soothingly, “Clara, darling, it is alright. There is no need to make a fuss over a child’s tantrum. These things happen you know?”But Clara’s furious eyes were fixed on Dante, thick with misplaced loyalty, so his attempt to calm her down only poured gasoline on the fire.“A fuss?” Clara hissed angrily, then she raised her voice and snapped at her husband with disgust in her eyes. “Look at him! He is not fit to be a father! He had raised her to be exactly like him…rude, stubborn, and always ready to fight! No matter what Mason said to him, is that an excuse for her to treat someone older than her this way? Biting him? This is the

  • CHAPTER 4

The hospital garden was a breath of fresh air, but there was a disturbance in the middle. Dante’s heart was in his throat as he followed Nurse Amy frantic steps to where a small crowd had gathered around a flower bed.In the middle of it were two children, screaming and throwing limbs. One was Jasper Lockwood, with his face squeezed up in a sneer. The other, to Dante’s disbelief, was his Daisy. Her usually pale face was flushed with deep, angry red anger, and she was clinging to Jasper’s arm with a ferocity he never knew she had.“Give it back!” Daisy shrieked angrily. “It is mine! My Mommy gave it to me!”Jasper laughed and held the delicate gold necklace high above his head, way out of her reach and jeered. “Your Mommy? You are so dumb! You are nothing but a beggar! An insect bothering my new mommy!”“That is a lie!” She cried. “My mommy gave this to me because she loves me!”“This?” Jasper waved the necklace over his head and laughed. “This is nothing! An ordinary chain! Mommy Clar
