The Failure of ShadowBlade

A cold wind whipped across the ShadowBlade highlands, sweeping dust over the black stone podium that stood firm in the center of the ceremonial grounds. Below, hundreds of eyes were fixed on a single point: Kato. He stood there under a sun that felt like it was scorching his skin, his head bowed low. His shoulders trembled slightl, not from fear, but from the weight of the oppression he had endured for years.

All around him, rows of clan elites stood tall like statues. Aidos, the clan elder with a long white beard, looked down at him with a familiar gaze of utter disdain. On the other side, a row of youths his own age, Nursultan, Yerlan, and Arman, whispered to one another with suppressed snickers.

"Look at that piece of trash," whispered Bekzat, his shrill voice piercing the heavy silence. "He’s been leeching off the clan’s rations for ten years, yet he can't even perform a basic shadow technique. It’s honestly pathetic."

Dias, standing beside him, burst into laughter, completely disregarding the formality of the ceremony. "I heard he spent all last night crying in the armory. A total dead weight. Why is the clan even giving him a chance? They should have tossed him into the Slums years ago."

Kato clenched his fists beneath his oversized black robes. His nails dug into his palms until it hurt, a pain that at least reminded him he was still real in a world that wanted to erase him.

"Kato," Aidos’s voice echoed, heavy and authoritative, silencing the murmurs across the field. "Today is your final chance. If your shadow technique does not awaken within seconds, you know the consequences."

Kato took a deep breath. His lungs felt tight. He closed his eyes, trying to focus the energy in his dantian, attempting to coax the flow of power that had seemingly slept soundly behind a mysterious defensive wall for years. He imagined shadows dancing at his fingertips, visualizing the cold darkness that defined the ShadowBlade clan.

Come on, come out! he commanded internally. Please, just this once.

The energy stirred slightly, creeping slow like water spilling onto parched earth. However, just as he tried to pull it to the surface of his skin, an incredibly violent burning sensation seared through his chest. That seal, that damned, tightly locked seal, rejected it outright. The flow of energy wildly reversed its course, causing Kato to cough violently as a warm liquid trickled from his nose.

The heavy silence was suddenly shattered by an explosion of laughter.

"Holy shit, he’s got a nosebleed!" Alikhan shouted, pointing at the stage. "Instead of shadows coming out, it’s just snot and blood! How can anyone be this weak?"

Sanzhar, who was usually quiet, couldn't help but smirk. "That’s not a shadow technique; that’s the 'self-humiliation' technique. Man, if I were him, I’d rather jump off a cliff than stand up there."

In the front row, Adil, Askar, and Timur exchanged looks of pure disgust. Aigerim and Aizhan, girls from the main family branch, didn't even deign to glance at the stage, busy discussing new weapons more worthy of their attention. The atmosphere in the square had turned into a mass bullying session. Harsh words like "trash," "burden," and "disgrace" rang out clearly from every corner.

Kato staggered. His vision blurred. He looked toward the VIP balcony, where his mother sat, her hands faintly bound by shadows controlled by the guards. His mother’s gaze was filled with agony, yet she shook her head slowly, a warning for Kato not to fight back. If Kato caused trouble, if he tried to rebel, his mother’s life would be the forfeit.

"Enough!" Aidos bellowed, halting the rowdy voices of the youth. He rose from his throne and stepped toward the edge of the podium. His wrinkled face looked incredibly cruel as he stared directly into Kato’s eyes. "Kato, you are no longer a part of ShadowBlade. You have failed time and time again, wasting the clan’s precious resources and bringing shame to our name."

"Elder, wait..." Kato’s voice was hoarse, barely audible.

"There is no waiting!" Aidos cut him off coldly. He ripped the silver emblem pinned to Kato’s chest with one violent jerk, tearing the front of Kato's robes. "From this moment forward, your inheritance status is revoked. You are no longer a son of this clan. You are nothing but an outcast. Leave now, before we decide to execute you right here to preserve the clan's honor."

The crowd grew rowdy again, this time with cheers of approval. Dana, Madina, and Gulnaz whispered snidely, while Zhanar and Aisulu laughed with satisfaction. Kamila, Meruyert, and Dinara even began throwing small pebbles at the stage, demanding that Kato vanish immediately.

Kato looked down. He stared at the silver emblem now lying on the stone floor, dull and meaningless. The shame that had been burning him earlier turned into a cold chill that spread to his very bones. He had no strength to retaliate, no support to stand tall.

Assel, Aliya, Tomiris, Saltanat, and Karakat, all the eyes he once considered those of his peers now looked at him with a coldness that suggested his very presence was a stain. Kato knew that if he fought back, his mother would die on the spot. He forced his body to stand upright, even though his legs felt like jelly.

Without a single word, Kato turned around. He walked through the crowd, which intentionally parted for him as if he were a pest to be avoided. Each step felt heavy, as if the floor itself rejected his footprints. He did not look back, even though he knew hundreds of eyes were still fixed on him with contempt.

He walked down the podium steps, passing the rows of youths who continued to jeer at him. When he reached the main gate of the clan, two guards with shadow spears glowing purple blocked his path. They didn't allow him to take anything but the clothes on his back.

"Get out," one of the guards said, gesturing toward the giant gates that began to open with a long, metallic creak. "And don't you dare look back. The Slums are your new home, rat."

Kato stepped out through the gates. The light of the setting sun greeted him, but he felt no warmth. Out there, his world no longer consisted of training and clan hierarchies, but of ruins, mud, and the absence of hope.

The clan gates slammed shut right behind him. That thud sounded like a death knell for his old identity. Kato stood there, at the threshold of a rocky path leading to the bleak valley below. He was truly alone. No clan, no protection, and most painfully: he had just left the only person he cared about under their cruel rule.

He took a deep breath, inhaling the dusty air before him. In the distance, the lights of the Slum District began to flicker, twinkling with a dim and deceptive glow. Kato started to walk, his chafed feet beginning to bleed, leaving a red trail across the dusty road.

He didn't know what awaited him there; he didn't know how he would survive the night without a piece of bread or a sip of water, but one thing was certain: in his heart, something much darker and deeper than the ShadowBlade clan's shadow techniques began to throb, responding to the pain and betrayal he had just received.

Kato kept walking, turning his back on the clan gates that had become the symbol of his life's ruin. Every step took him further from the past, yet every step also brought him closer to a destiny he couldn't even imagine. As he reached the first bend shadowed by the cliffs, he paused for a moment, looking back at the clan's peak just once, not out of longing, but because of a silent vow he had carved into his veins.

"You threw me away because you were afraid I'd fail," he whispered softly, his voice swallowed by the night wind. "But just wait until you realize what you've actually thrown away."

He vanished into the darkness of the valley, stepping toward a merciless new life.
