"Stop the car," Victor commanded, his voice a low vibration that cut through the hum of the engine.

The driver, a man who had seen Victor survive things no human should, didn’t hesitate. The black sedan hissed to a stop near the edge of the Maheswara estate, where the manicured gardens bled into a jagged cliffside overlooking the ocean.

"Boss? We’re not clear yet. Security is swarming the front," the driver muttered, his eyes darting to the rearview mirror.

"Give me five minutes, Lucius. I need the air to taste like something other than their fear," Victor said, pushing the door open.

He didn't head for the gates. Instead, he moved toward a secluded stone balcony that jutted out over the crashing waves. It was a relic of the old manor, a place his father had loved. Victor pulled a silver case from his pocket, snapping it open to retrieve a single clove cigarette. The spark of his lighter was the only light in the darkness, illuminating the sharp, vengeful angles of his face.

"You know, those will kill you faster than your uncle’s hitmen," a voice drifted from the shadows.

Victor didn't flinch. He took a long drag, the cherry glowing bright. "I’ve already been dead once. It’s overrated."

Ariella stepped out from behind a heavy ivy-covered pillar. The emerald of her dress was dark, almost black in the moonlight, but her eyes—those amber, predatory eyes—were unmistakable. She held a flute of champagne in one hand, though she hadn't touched a drop.

"Is that why you’re lurking in the dark? Avoiding the encore?" she asked, her voice like velvet dragged over gravel.

"I don't lurk. I observe," Victor replied, exhaling a cloud of smoke that the wind immediately snatched away. "And you’re a long way from the party, Ariella. Or should I call you by a different name?"

She let out a soft, melodic laugh that didn't reach her eyes. "You remembered. I’m flattered. Most men are too busy looking at my chest to hear my name."

"I’m not most men."

"No," she said, stepping closer, the scent of jasmine and gunpowder hitting him again. "Most men don't rise from the grave to bankrupt their families before dessert is served. That was quite a show, Victor."

"Glad you enjoyed it. Admission wasn't cheap."

"Oh, I think I’ll be the one sending you a bill," she countered, leaning against the stone railing, her body inches from his. "Do you have any idea whose nest you just poked? It’s not just the Maheswaras. You just froze the assets of three different cartels using the Ares Project as a laundry service."

Victor turned to face her fully, his massive frame towering over her. "You seem remarkably well-informed for a socialite."

"And you seem remarkably calm for a man with a literal price on his head," she whispered, tilting her head back to meet his gaze. "What’s the plan, Ghost? Run back to whatever hole you crawled out of?"

"The plan was to have a smoke in peace," Victor said, his voice dropping an octave. He reached out, his thumb grazing the line of her jaw. Her skin was electric. "But then a beautiful complication decided to corner me."

Ariella didn't pull away. If anything, she leaned into his touch, her eyes darkening. "Is that what I am? A complication?"

"You're a spy. Or a thief. Or maybe just a very high-end distraction sent by my uncle," he mused, his hand sliding down to the nape of her neck, his fingers tangling in her silk-soft hair.

"Maybe I'm all three," she breathed, her hand coming up to rest on his chest, right over his heart. "It’s beating pretty fast for a dead man."

"That’s not fear, sweetheart."

"I know what it is," she said, her lips curving into a smirk. "It’s the same thing I felt when you looked at me in that ballroom. You want to tear the world down, and for some reason, you think I’m part of the debris."

Victor’s grip tightened, pulling her flush against him. The heat between them was sudden and violent, a physical weight that made the air feel thin. He pinned her back against the cold stone railing, his body anchoring her in place.

"You're very bold for someone who’s currently trapped between me and a hundred-foot drop," he growled.

"I’ve always liked the view from the edge," she replied, her breath hitching as his other hand found the curve of her waist. "Are you going to kiss me or interrogate me, Victor? Because I’m getting bored of the talking."

"I don't think you'd survive either one," he muttered, his face inches from hers.

He could smell the sweetness of her breath, the heat radiating off her skin. He wanted to crush her mouth against his, to see if she tasted as dangerous as she looked. His gaze dropped to her lips, and for a second, the revenge, the money, and the empire didn't matter. There was only this—the friction of her silk dress against his suit and the wild, untamed hunger in her eyes.

"Try me," she challenged, her hand sliding up his chest to his collar, her nails digging slightly into the fabric. "Show me what the 'Ares' everyone is so afraid of actually looks like."

Victor leaned in, his lips brushing the shell of her ear. "You have no idea what you’re playing with, Ariella. I didn't come back for a romance. I came back to burn it all."

"Then let's start a fire," she whispered.

Just as his mouth was about to claim hers, the heavy thud of boots echoed from the terrace above. Beams of flashlights cut through the darkness, scanning the gardens.

"He went this way! Check the west balcony!" a voice shouted.

Victor cursed under his breath, his forehead resting against hers for a fleeting, frustrated second. The spell didn't break; it shattered.

"Duty calls," Ariella murmured, though she looked just as breathless as he felt.

She reached out, her fingers nimble and quick, and before he could react, she snatched the silver lighter from his hand.

"What are you doing?" he hissed, looking toward the encroaching lights.

"Taking a souvenir," she said, stepping back into the shadows of the pillar, a triumphant glint in her amber eyes. "Consider it a down payment. I have a feeling you’re going to need this back."

"Ariella, give it back," he commanded, stepping toward her.

"Come and get it tomorrow, Victor. If you’re still breathing," she teased, blowing him a mock kiss as she vanished into the dense ivy, moving with a grace that suggested she knew the estate’s hidden paths better than he did.

"There! By the rail!"

The flashlight beam hit Victor. He didn't look at the guards. He looked at the spot where she had disappeared, a dark smirk finally touching his lips.

"Boss! Now!"

The roar of a high-performance engine drowned out the guards' shouts. Below the balcony, on the narrow service road, Lucius had swapped the sedan for a matte-black Ducati. He skidded the bike into a drift, the tires screaming against the asphalt.

Victor didn't hesitate. He vaulted over the stone railing, dropping fifteen feet with the practiced ease of a man who had jumped from burning planes. He landed hard, rolling once, and sprang up just as the motorcycle slowed enough for him to grab the pillion.

He swung his leg over, his hands gripping Lucius’s shoulders.

"You took your time!" Lucius yelled over the engine’s growl.

"I was occupied," Victor shouted back.

As the bike tore away, the engine screaming as it hit the straightaway toward the main gates, Victor looked back one last time. High up on the balcony, a single figure in emerald stood against the moon. She wasn't hiding anymore. She was watching him go.

He reached into his pocket, his fingers finding only emptiness where his lighter should have been.

"Damn woman," he muttered, a cold, sharp thrill running through his veins.

The Maheswara Group was in chaos. His family was ruined. But as the wind whipped past him at a hundred miles per hour, Victor realized the game had only just begun. And for the first time in a year, he wasn't the only one playing.

"Lucius, get the team ready," Victor said into the comms in his helmet.

"For the takeover?"

"No," Victor replied, the image of Ariella’s amber eyes burned into his mind. "We’re going hunting. I need to find out who really owns that emerald dress."

"Lucius," Victor breathed the name, his voice a jagged edge cutting through the hum of the server racks. "The bastard didn't just walk through the front door; he had the spare key I gave him for the backup protocols."Hideo stopped typing. The silence in the underground bunker was sudden, vacuum-sealed, and heavy. He turned slowly, the blue light of his monitors casting long, skeletal shadows across his face. "Lucius? The man is a sycophant, Victor. He’s been your shadow for a decade. Why would he burn you now? Unless he’s suicidal, he knows you’ll gut him."Victor felt the cold iron of reality settling into his gut. He pushed off the cooling rack, ignoring the white-hot agony in his shoulder. "He isn't suicidal. He’s scared. Check his family’s offshore holdings. The ones in Cyprus. Look for recent injections of capital, specifically from a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands. Look for anything linked to the Wicaksani clearinghouse."Hideo’s fingers blurred again. "You’re f

"Shut up, Hideo," Victor growled, his breath hitching as he slumped against a rack of cooling fans that hummed with a low, predatory vibration. "Trace the handshake. The override on my accounts didn't come from a brute-force attack. It came from an internal key. My key."Hideo paused, his keyboard falling silent. He swiveled his chair, his eyes narrow slits behind thick-rimmed glasses that magnified his skepticism. "Your key? That’s impossible. That encryption is biometric and tied to your personal server. If someone moved your assets, they didn't just 'hack' you, Victor. They walked through the front door and signed the guestbook.""Check the digital logs," Victor commanded, his voice dropping into a tone that usually made board members sweat. "Look for the ghost signature. Someone used a legacy bridge.""A legacy bridge?" Hideo whistled, a low, sharp sound that cut through the sterile room. "That hasn’t been active since the merger with Lucius two years ago. Are you telling me Luciu

The back stairs of the penthouse smelled of industrial bleach and stagnant fear. Victor moved like a man composed of glass shards, every step a jagged reminder of the bullet wound searing his shoulder. He checked his watch—a mechanical Patek that still ticked, oblivious to the fact that his entire digital empire had just been vaporized."Twenty minutes," he muttered to the empty stairwell. "Twenty minutes since the server signaled the wipe."He reached the basement level, the air growing thick with the scent of motor oil and ozone. His contact, a disgraced former systems architect named Hideo who lived in the bowels of the city’s data centers, was waiting. Hideo didn’t look up from his monitor; he didn't even acknowledge Victor’s bloody bandage."You’re late," Hideo said, his fingers dancing across a custom-built mechanical keyboard. "And you’re bleeding on my floor, Victor. Do you know how hard it is to get high-grade server dust out of blood?"Victor leaned against a stack of crates

Victor stared at the terminal on his secondary device. The screen didn’t crack, but the flickering intensified. His fingers flew across the keyboard, his movements jagged and pained. He accessed the back-end protocol for the private clearinghouse in Singapore, the one place he kept a safety net of offshore liquidity that didn't touch the main Wicaksani accounts.ERROR: SECURITY CREDENTIALS CORRUPTED."Dammit," he hissed, grabbing his coat. The headlights of the black SUV cut through the rain-slicked darkness of the North District, as sharp as a blade. He didn't have the strength left to be a predator.By the time the car glided into the underground garage of a glass-and-steel fortress overlooking the bay, Victor’s vision was a shimmering haze of red and grey."Can you walk, or do I need to call a forklift?"The voice was like silk and ice. Ariella stood by the private elevator, her midnight-blue blazer gone, the sleeves of her white silk shirt rolled up to her elbows."I’ve had worse Tuesdays," Victor rasped, his voice cracking as he leaned heavily on the driver."Don't lie to me.
