Erin leaned closer. She held Derek’s gaze, a cold challenge in her eyes.

“Do you dare show up? Once we sign those papers, everything between us is over.”

In that moment, her foundation, her public image, and even her career no longer mattered. She only wanted to see him falter.

But the reaction she expected never came.

Instead, Derek nodded without hesitation.

“I’m glad you finally agreed,” he said. “I’ll see you on Monday.”

Erin froze.

Before Erin could respond, Derek pulled his arm free from

Carrie’s offer hit everyone in the room hard. They were supposed to be protecting her. Instead, she was offering herself up to save them.Several of the men clenched their jaws, sick with anger and shame.Austin only sneered.“Now you’re willing to cooperate? You could’ve saved us all a lot of trouble.”He looked her over.“But I’ve changed my mind. You want me to let them go? Strip and dance for me. Right here. Everything off.”Carrie stared at him in disbelief and took an involuntary step back.“No?” Austin shrugged. “Then I’ll keep counting.”“Seven.”“Six.”“Five.”“I’ll do it!”She was trembling all over, her teeth digging into her lip and her nails cutting into her palms. She couldn’t let Derek be killed because of her. If humiliating herself was what it took to get everyone out alive, she would do it.“Carrie, no!”“Don’t do it!”“Shut the fuck up!”Austin couldn’t hide his grin. He quickly waved his men forward to silence the others before anyone could change her mind.“I’ll d

The door burst open with a crash.Austin Callahan barged in, gauze taped across his nose, with more than a dozen men behind him. The hallway beyond the doorway was packed with more.“Get everyone else out of here,” he ordered. “Tell them to leave while they still can.”One of his men hurried off to clear the restaurant.Moments later, Bellini’s owner appeared in the doorway, pale and visibly nervous.“Mr. Callahan, please. What happened?”He attempted a smile.“Whatever it is, I’m sure we can work something out. There’s no need for this. I’ll cover—”Austin slapped him across the face. The owner stood stunned, one hand pressed to his cheek.“Someone’s leaving here on a stretcher today,” Austin said. “Keep running your mouth, and you can join them. I’ll put you in the hospital for six months.”He reached out and patted the man’s other cheek.“Want to find out if I’m serious?”“No. No, I’m leaving. I’m sorry, Mr. Callahan.”The owner backed away, then turned and hurried out, abandoning

Derek frowned as he watched Austin hurry away, but he didn’t take the threats seriously. He returned to the table and turned to Carrie. “Are you hurt? If you need to get checked out, we’ll take you to the hospital. The company will cover it. And if you want to report him to the police, we’ll help with that, too.” The others turned toward her, concern mingling with their admiration for Derek. “He’s right, Carrie. We’re all here for you. We’re not letting him get away with this.” “What a disgusting creep.” “Thank God Derek was here. That bastard deserved it.” Anyone would have been shaken by what had just happened. It was the sort of experience that could stay with someone for years. “I’m okay.” Carrie rubbed her reddened eyes and shook her head. “Thank you, Derek. Thank you, everyone.” “All right. Let’s get back to lunch.” Satisfied that she wasn’t hurt, Derek picked up his fork. Jensen leaned toward him. “Derek,” he said quietly, “Austin wasn’t bluffing about the Callahan

Titan Corp.“Titan Corp?” He looked up. “That’s quite a name to live up to.”“Alan chose it,” Jensen said. “He says you’re a sleeping giant. Once you get going, you’ll shake up this city. Before long, the whole country will know your name.”“And I agree with him. You’re young, you’ve got the talent, and you’re only just getting started.”Jensen meant every word. He had seen Derek’s abilities firsthand, and his respect for him had only grown.“You’re giving me too much credit.”Derek smiled, taking the praise lightly. The name didn’t matter much to him. He just didn’t want to go back to the empty life he had been living. He had spent enough years putting Erin first. Now he wanted to build a future on his own terms.Over the next half hour or so, Jensen introduced him to each member of the team and explained their experience and specialties.Alan had chosen well. Every one of them brought something valuable to the company.Eventually, Derek glanced at the time.“It’s almost lunchtime. L

“You’re kidding… right?” Iris stared at Derek, her face drained of color. “He’s a nobody. How could he possibly know Zach Harris?” Zach ignored her and beckoned two guards over. “Take her to HR. Have them process her termination.” “If she can’t treat a customer with basic respect, she has no place here.” The guards took Iris by the arms and led her away. Paul finally snapped out of his shock. He hurried to Zach’s side, shaking his head as though he had disapproved of Iris all along. “You’re absolutely right, Uncle Zach. I’ve been meaning to fire her myself. She’s rude to clients, and her numbers are terrible.” Then he turned to Derek with an eager smile. “You certainly keep a low profile, Mr. Moss. Though I had a feeling there was more to you than met the eye.” So Zach was his uncle. That explained the shared surname. “Iris gave me completely the wrong impression,” Paul continued. “I should never have listened to her. I hope you can let this go, just this once.” Derek re

“M-Mr. Harris? What are you doing down here?” Her head spun. The color drained from her face. Did Derek really know him? Could he actually get her fired? No. That wasn’t possible. Where would he have gotten a connection like that? She stood rooted to the spot, her face burning as she struggled to find something to say. “Mr. Harris, let me explain—” He cut her off before she could get another word out.The manager cut Iris off before she could explain.“Enough. You’re nowhere near your target this month, and I find you down here catching up with friends? How many times do we have to have this conversation?”Iris blinked.“Sorry?”“Save it for after work. Next time I catch you, we’re going to have a problem.”He glanced at Derek’s clothes.“God knows he’s not here to spend any money,” he muttered.Derek frowned. The man didn’t seem to recognize him. There was no sign that he knew anything about their phone call, either.Had he been speaking to someone else?“Understood. It won’t
