For several seconds, nobody moved.

The man standing beyond the transit junction had Riven Veyron’s face, Riven’s voice, and the same faint scar beneath his left eye.

Yet the Riven beside Kael looked as though he had seen a ghost.

“You’re dead,” Riven whispered.

The stranger tilted his head.

“You’ve said that already.”

“No.” Riven shook his head. “I watched them close the chamber. I heard the locks engage. I felt the connection disappear.”

“Then you watched the wrong chamber.”

Alaric drew his sw

  • The Request That Knew They Were Watching

The F-01 request remained suspended for eleven minutes before the panel noticed the second anomaly. It had not been submitted through the ordinary central continuity interface. It had arrived through a maintenance pathway that was supposed to accept only preservation instructions and diagnostic requests. The pathway could identify a disputed record, retain its current state, and notify an authorized reviewer. It could not request that a disputed appointment be reconciled.Yet the request had reached the reconciliation queue.Lyra stood beside the panel’s display while Teren traced the transaction’s recorded path.“Start from the point where the cabinet alarm activated,” she instructed.Teren opened the event history.“The Witness Preparation Room detected a dependency conflict. It sent a diagnostic notice to the central index. The notice itself was permitted.”“And after that?”“The central index queried the appointment’s status. It received the original acceptance field, which remain

  • Witness Who Never Arrived

The first indication that BR-17 mattered came from a record that should not have existed. At dawn, Lyra received a notice from the independent review panel. Their request for the original disposition of BR-17 had been accepted for examination, but the archive had returned a discrepancy before access could be granted. The central index described BR-17 as a completed review. The preserved First Foundry reference described it as returned for independent review. Both records carried the same case identifier. They could not both accurately describe the final state of the same proceeding.Lyra forwarded the notice to Elias and Teren, then contacted Kael.“Don’t move,” she told him when his face appeared on the communication panel.“I wasn’t planning to.”Brann, standing behind him, gave a skeptical grunt.Lyra continued. “The panel has authorized a comparison of the disposition metadata. We have not been authorized to open the sealed testimony or identify the people involved.”“What does th

  • The Custodian Beneath the Foundry

The answer from the First Foundry arrived after midnight. It contained no name, no explanation, and no promise of access.LOCAL CUSTODIAN RESPONSE: RECEIVEDREQUEST FOR EXAMINATION: ACKNOWLEDGEDIDENTITY DISCLOSURE: DECLINEDLIMITED RECORD REVIEW: ACCEPTEDA second message established the conditions. The custodian would permit two independent reviewers to inspect the original acceptance packet in the presence of a local witness. No physical record could be removed, no sealed identity could be opened, and no command-bearing device could be activated. The custodian would remain free to end the examination at any time.Lyra accepted the conditions.Elias was appointed as the second reviewer. Teren would remain available to examine the resulting evidence, but he would not enter the chamber unless the custodian later agreed.Kael was not included.Brann made certain he understood that before the final arrangements were completed.“You are not going,” Brann said.“I know.”“You said that la

  • The Bridge Beneath the First Authority

Kael read Lyra’s report three times. The first time, he followed the evidence. The second time, he checked the sequence. The third time, he stopped at the name of the deployment bridge.MB-04.The bridge had carried a test-only compatibility configuration into the live central processing environment. The deployment record named F-01 as the requestor, but the required authorization acknowledgment was missing. If that connection could be authenticated, they would have established more than another incomplete transaction. They would have identified a mechanism through which an unresolved administrative reference could influence the system’s live behavior.Kael placed the report aside. His ribs hurt, his fingers were stiff, and Brann had already threatened to confiscate every document within his reach if he tried to stand again. But the question was not going away. How had MB-04 accepted a deployment request whose authority remained unverified? The answer might explain how the same contin

  • The Credential That Refused to Authenticate

The validation record was found beneath a record that officially did not exist. That was how Elias described it when the panel’s limited search returned its first result. The independent credential-validation index contained no active entry for IA-17-B. The reference had been marked incomplete during the legacy migration and excluded from ordinary searches. However, a preserved dependency map still pointed to a validation event stored in a separate authentication archive. The event had never been deleted. It had simply become unreachable through the index that was supposed to find it.Kael read the result twice.“Can we inspect it without opening the accepting party’s identity?”“Yes,” Lyra answered. “The validation result and the identity record are stored separately. We have authorization to inspect the result, not the identity.”Maerin submitted the request through the independent review interface. The archive accepted it, then returned a warning.VALIDATION EVENT: FOUNDCREDENTIAL

  • The Name Removed Before Appointment

The original appointment register was not where the archive claimed it should be.The panel’s authorization arrived before dawn, permitting a limited comparison of FA-AP-17 against the original appointment index and any surviving independent copies. Maerin opened the designated repository, but the first search returned an unexpected result.REGISTER: INDEPENDENT APPOINTMENT INDEXREFERENCE: FA-AP-17ORIGINAL ENTRY: NOT PRESENTHISTORICAL CROSS-REFERENCE: PRESERVEDCROSS-REFERENCE DESTINATION: PRE-REGISTRATION LEDGERDESTINATION ACCESS: REQUIRES INDEPENDENT CUSTODIAN REVIEWElias checked the reference against the metal plate delivered the previous evening.“The plate points to the pre-registration ledger,” he said. “The central index points to the same destination, but neither establishes that the original appointment was valid.”Lyra nodded.“Then we inspect the ledger, not the holder.”Kael sat beside the table with his injured ribs bound beneath his shirt. Brann had insisted on brin
