Chapter 010: The Papers and the Price

Williams stayed in the small rented room until night came. The trust papers lay on the table under a cheap lamp. He read every page twice. His father’s signature was clear. The rules were simple. The money and the company shares could not change hands until Williams turned twenty-five. No one could move them without his name on the paper too.

He had stopped Raymond for now. But Raymond would notice the papers were gone. He would start looking hard.

The System spoke at last.

A quiet warmth moved through Williams’s head. Suddenly he understood how to read people better—small signs in their voices, the way they looked away, the things they tried to hide. It was not mind-reading. It was just sharper eyes and ears.

[QR Points: 31

Money: 9,150,000 dollars]

Still not enough for the big strength skill, but closer. Williams put the papers inside his jacket and left the room. He needed a safer place for them. A bank deposit box would work, but only if no one from the family could track it.

He walked to a quiet branch across the city and opened a private box under a different name. He paid in cash. The clerk asked no questions. Williams locked the original papers inside and kept only a copy for himself.

When he stepped back onto the street, his phone rang again. Aunt May’s number.

“Williams, they know,” she said, voice shaking. “Raymond checked the safe an hour ago. He is furious. Your uncle is calling lawyers. Raymond said he will find you tonight. Please stay hidden.”

“I have the papers,” Williams answered. “They cannot change anything now.”

“That will not stop them. Raymond has friends. Bad ones. Be careful.”

The call ended. Williams put the phone away and kept walking. He did not go back to the rented room. Instead he found a busy night market and sat at a small food stall. He ordered noodles and watched the crowd.

A man in a dark coat sat down two seats away. He ordered nothing. He just looked at Williams.

“You caused trouble for my boss,” the man said in a low voice. “The restaurant manager. He wants the money back and an apology. Or he wants you broken.”

Williams’s new skill told him the man was nervous. His hands stayed under the table. Probably holding something.

“I already paid,” Williams said. “Tell your boss to leave me alone.”

The man smiled without humor. “Boss does not forget. He knows you helped the waitress too. He will make her pay if you do not come.”

Laura. Williams’s chest tightened. He had given her money so her family could eat and buy medicine. If the manager went after her now, everything he did would be wasted.

“Where is she?” Williams asked.

“Come with me and find out.”

Williams stood up slowly. He left money for the noodles and followed the man into a side street. Two more men waited by a black car. They were the same guards from the warehouse, still limping a little.

Williams did not fight yet. He needed to know where Laura was. They pushed him into the back seat. The car drove toward the old industrial area near the river—the same place as before.

Inside the warehouse the fat manager sat under the same single light. Laura stood beside him, her arms held by another man. Her face was pale, but her eyes were dry.

“You took my face and my worker,” the manager said. “Now you will pay both.”

Williams looked at Laura. “Did they hurt you?”

She shook her head once. “Not yet. They said if you came, they would let me go.”

The manager laughed. “Maybe. Or maybe not. First you give me one hundred thousand dollars. Then we talk about the girl.”

Williams’s mind worked fast. He had money. He could pay. But paying once would never be enough. The manager would keep coming back.

He took out his bank card and held it up. “I can transfer the money right now. But only if Laura walks out that door first.”

The manager’s eyes narrowed. “You think you give orders here?”

“I think you want the money more than you want trouble,” Williams said. His voice stayed calm. The new information skill showed him the truth—the manager was greedy, not brave. He was also afraid of real power.

The manager hesitated. Then he nodded to the guard holding Laura. “Let her go. Wait outside.”

Laura walked past Williams. She stopped for a second. “You should not have come,” she whispered.

“Go,” he answered. “Find a safe place. Use the money I gave you.”

She left. The warehouse door closed behind her.

Williams turned back to the manager. “Now the transfer.”

He made the call to the bank and moved one hundred thousand dollars. The manager’s phone buzzed with the confirmation. His smile returned.

“Good. Now we are even… for today.”

Williams put the card away. “We are not even. You threatened Laura. You sent men after me twice. If you or your people come near either of us again, I will not use money next time. I will use everything else I have.”

The manager’s face darkened, but he waved his hand. “Get out. Both of you are nothing to me now.”

Williams walked out of the warehouse. Laura was waiting at the corner under a streetlight. She looked smaller than before.

“Why do you keep helping me?” she asked.

“Because someone has to,” Williams said. “And because I know what it feels like when no one does.”

They walked together toward the busier streets. Laura spoke after a long silence.

“My little brother is sick. The money you gave me will help for a while. But the hospital bills keep growing. I need a new job.”

“You will find one,” Williams said. “You are strong.”

She looked at him for a moment, then nodded. “Be careful, Williams. People like the manager do not forget. And neither do families that hate you.”

They reached a main road. Laura took a bus toward her side of the city. Williams watched until the bus disappeared.

He returned to a different cheap room for the night. The papers were safe. Laura was free again. He had spent money and gained a new skill. But the real danger was still growing.

The System spoke one more time before he slept.

[New quest pending.

The true source of the family betrayal is closer than the host thinks.

Prepare.]

Williams stared at the dark ceiling. Raymond wanted the trust. The manager wanted revenge. And somewhere behind both of them, someone else was pulling strings.

He closed his eyes.

Tomorrow he would start looking for the real enemy.

She looked at the floor and said nothing. Williams stood straight and met the manager’s eyes.“I will pay the fifty thousand dollars right now,” Williams said. The manager laughed. “You? With what money? You came here in dirty clothes and ate like a beggar. Do you think I believe you?”Williams took out his bank card and placed it on the desk. “Check the account.”The manager’s smile became smaller. He picked up the phone and called the bank. After a short talk his face changed. He looked at the card again, then at Williams.“How does a man like you have so much money?” he asked in a low voice.“That is not your business,” Williams said. “Transfer the fifty thousand dollars for
