Chapter 7: A Name in the Ashes
Zephyr didn't open the letter at the Customs House. He carried it three miles through back alleys to the old tannery, where Mira was waiting with Dessa's crew and the wagons. "It's from my mother," he said, and put it on a table. "She died when I was six." Mira looked at the wax. "That seal is cracked." "I know." He reached for it. The moment his fingers touched the wax, the cold weight in his chest lurched, and the System flashed on in front of his eyes. **[Relic detected: Memory Seal (Damaged).]** **[Compatibility: 91%.]** **[Warning: Forced activation will destroy contents.]** Zephyr froze. "It says I can open it. But not by force." "What says?" Mira asked. "The System." He waved a hand at the empty air. "It reads relics if I touch them. It doesn't tell me how to open them." "Then how do you open it?" "I don't know yet." He sat down, put both hands around the seal, and thought about the Ward. That was the only technique he had. A Ward pushed energy outward in a thin sheet. If he turned that sheet inward and kept it gentle, maybe it would work like a key. He pulled a thread of cold from his chest and let it seep into the wax. The seal glowed faintly. Then a spike of pain hit behind his eyes, and the glow flickered. **[Soul Integrity: 61%.]** "Too much," he muttered. "Less." He tried again with half the flow. The glow steadied. The wax warmed under his fingers. Slowly, one hairline crack at a time, the seal began to unlock. **[Soul Integrity: 58%.]** Sweat dripped off his chin. His nose started bleeding. He held on. The seal split in two with a soft click. **[Skill improved: Ward (Crude). Proficiency: 9%.]** He slumped back, gasping, and wiped his nose on his sleeve. Mira was staring at him. "You're bleeding," she said. "It's worth it." --- Inside the seal were two pages. The first was an official record stamped with the Veyne Institute crest. Mira read it first and frowned. "Expedition Nine. Led by Doctor Maric Tull, fourteen members, deep survey of the Nethralis lower ruins. Twenty-three years ago." She looked up. "Zephyr, your mother's name is on the roster. Aelira Kaelith, senior translator." "My mother was a seamstress." "The record says translator. And the final page says the expedition ended in a mining collapse. All fourteen dead." "All fourteen?" Zephyr's voice came out hollow. "She died when I was six. That doesn't match." "It matches if she wasn't on the expedition when it collapsed." Mira flipped the page. "There's a margin note. Someone from the Church signed off on the report before the Institute even filed it. That's not procedure. That's cleanup." She turned another page and went very still. "What?" Zephyr said. "Nothing." "Mira." She put the page down. Her hands weren't quite steady. "There's a reference at the bottom. 'See follow-up investigation, Professor Aldren Veyne.'" "Veyne. Like the Institute?" "Like my mentor." She swallowed. "He was the one who trained me. He spent his last five years reopening the Expedition Nine records. He thought the collapse was staged." Zephyr's voice went flat. "You knew." "I didn't know it was connected to you." "You saw my mark and told me you'd never seen it outside your own papers." He stood slowly. "You said you found it in a sealed archive. Whose archive?" "His." "Say it." "Professor Veyne died two years ago," Mira said. The words came out tight. "They found him at the bottom of the Institute stairs. Everyone called it an accident. Everything he'd collected disappeared the same night." Zephyr stared at her. The room had gone completely silent. Dessa and her crew stood frozen at the edge of the tannery. "You've known since the day you met me," he said. "You looked at that mark and decided I was a way to finish his work." "At first." She met his eyes. "Not now." "I don't care about now." "Zephyr." "If you lie to me again, we're finished. I won't warn you twice." He turned back to the table. "Now read me the letter." Mira exhaled. She didn't argue. --- The second page was a letter in small, precise handwriting. Mira read it aloud. *Zephyr, if you are reading this, something has gone wrong, and I am sorry. I could not stay to explain. Your father and I found something in the lower ruins that was never meant to be found. The Church knows. They will come for everyone who touched it.* *I have hidden what I can. The seal will only open for you. I do not know how that is possible, and that frightens me more than anything else.* *Trust nobody who offers you power. Trust nobody who offers you safety. Both are leashes.* *I love you. I love Rowan. Be braver than I was.* *Aelira.* Zephyr read the last lines over Mira's shoulder. His throat hurt. For fifteen years he had believed his mother died in a fever. He had never seen her handwriting. "Rowan," he said quietly. "She wrote Rowan's name. But Rowan was born after she disappeared." Mira looked at him sharply. "What did you say?" "Rowan is twelve. My mother vanished when I was six. That's a six year gap." He felt the floor tilt. "She couldn't have known his name." "Unless she knew about him before he was born," Mira said slowly. "Or she didn't die when you think she did." Neither of them spoke. In the corner, Dessa let out a long, low breath. Zephyr started to fold the letter. Then his thumb caught on a ridge at the bottom of the page. He held it up to the lantern. Below the signature, almost invisible, was one more line. The ink was darker, and the handwriting was completely different. Square and heavy, written by a hand pressing hard. Zephyr read it, and every drop of blood left his face. *If Zephyr survives, never let him enter the Ninth Vault.*Latest Chapter

Zephyr folded the card. "But she knows something about my mother. I can feel it."Mira didn't argue. She just handed him a small clay vial. "Salt water. If they give you anything to drink, dip a finger in first. Some Church wine carri

Chapter 8: The Scavenger's DuelThe challenge arrived on a gold-edged card, delivered by a smiling clerk in front of forty witnesses.*Lord Cassian Draven invites Zephyr Kaelith to a sanctioned duel at the Ember Pit, tomorrow at noon. "He knows where we're hiding.""He's telling you he knows," Mira said. "It's a leash.""Who's the opponent?"The clerk's smile widened. "Darius Voss."Zephyr's hand closed around the card until it crumpled.Dessa swore. "Voss is the best blade in the Ash District. He's won nineteen pit fights.""He's also the one who left me to die," Zephyr said.He turned back to the clerk. "I want one more thing. Wick, the boy with Blackroot poisoning. If I win, Cassian gives him the cure."The clerk blinked. "Lord Cassian said you might ask. He agrees."That scared Zephyr more than a

Chapter 6: The Man Who Bought the CityThe boy's name was Wick, and he was dying.Mira got them into a safe cellar under the bookbinder's shop. The old man, Tobin, took one look at Wick's neck and swore. "Blackroot. They put it in his water. It spreads until the heart stops.""Can you stop it?" Zephyr asked."Slow it. Salt, hot water, and your brother's fever tonic, if you can spare it." Tobin met his eyes. "It's a bad trade."Zephyr gave up half a bottle. Rowan's fever had dropped, and he was asleep on a cot with color in his face for the first time in weeks. Wick's black veins stopped climbing. They didn't recede."Three days," Tobin said. "Then he needs a real cure, and only Cassian's people have it."Zephyr stared at the wall. He had saved one child and doomed another, and Cassian had done both with a single bucket of water."I'm done running," he said.Mira looked up from her papers. "Good. What are you going to do?""Hit his business."---Everything Cassian owned ran on one thi

Chapter 5: The First Blood DebtZephyr found Rowan by following the medicine. The Quiet Buyer's contact had sold Cassian's men a crate of fever tonic two days ago, delivered to a warehouse at Dock Nine. Nobody needed that much tonic for guards. They needed it for a sick child."It's a trap," Mira said. They were crouched on a rooftop across the canal, watching the building. "Two guards at the front. Four on the roof. Those are trained fighters, not city watch.""I know.""Then wait until we have a plan.""Rowan has a day left." Zephyr checked the six brown bottles in his jacket. "I have a plan. It's just not a good one."Mira stared at him. "How bad?""The loading tunnel. Every dock warehouse has one for hauling cargo from the canal. They never guard it because nobody thinks scavengers fit through it.""Can you fit through it?""I've fit through worse."She pulled a small cloth bundle from her satchel and pressed it into his hand. Lockpicks. "Scream if you need me. I'll pretend I didn

Chapter 4: The Scholar Who Recognized the ImpossibleMira Veyne pulled a knife on him before he finished knocking."Wrong door," she said.Zephyr stood in the doorway with a tent pole under one arm and dried blood on his face. "You translated for the Marrow crew last spring. They said you could read anything.""They also said I was a fraud. Go away.""I have a mark on my chest that a man says hasn't been seen in three hundred years."The knife stayed where it was. But her eyes dropped to his shirt, then back to his face."Come in," she said. "Fast."Her room was a cramped attic above a bookbinder, stacked with papers up to the ceiling. Mira was about twenty-five, thin, with ink on her sleeves and the tired look of someone who hadn't slept properly in years. She locked the door, pulled the curtains, and pointed at a stool."Show me."Zephyr pulled his shirt open. The black crown mark sat over his heart, sharp as a brand. Mira stared at it for a long time. Her face went slowly pale."Wh
