The guard’s heavy combat boots crunched against the concrete floor, stopping less than three feet from the metal rack where Caleb and Chloe were crouched.

Caleb didn't breathe. His fingers tightened around the stock of his submachine gun, calculating the distance to the guard's throat.

Above them, a high-frequency server fan whirred loudly, masking the faint sound of rain dripping through a crack in the warehouse ceiling.

"Check the loading bay controls," the second guard called out from the far side of the room, his voice echoing off the brick walls. "The regional proxy server is throwing a thermal warning. If the core overheats, the Zurich backup link severs automatically."

The searching guard hesitated. He swept his flashlight beam across the dark gap between the server cabinets, the bright white light missing Caleb's shoulder by an inch.

"Probably just a moisture leak from the storm," the guard muttered. He turned on his heel and walked back toward the primary command desk, holstering his weapon.

Caleb leaned close to Chloe's ear. "Stay behind this rack. The moment I draw their attention, access the main terminal stack at the end of the aisle."

Chloe gave a tense nod, unzipping her backpack to pull out her diagnostic cable.

Caleb stepped out from behind the rack into the central aisle, bringing his weapon up with practiced speed.

He didn't give the guards time to react. He fired two quick bursts into the power distribution box mounted on the brick wall behind them.

Sparks erupted in a blinding shower of blue light. The main overhead fluorescents died instantly, plunging the warehouse into complete darkness, save for the blinking green and red LEDs of the server racks.

"Ambush!" the lead guard yelled, reaching for his tactical vest radio.

Caleb closed the distance in three long strides. He slammed the stock of his weapon into the lead guard's wrist, sending the radio clattering across the floor, then followed through with a hard elbow strike to the man's chest. The guard hit the concrete hard, gasping for air.

The second guard drew his sidearm and raised it toward Caleb's shadow, but a sudden flash fired from the far side of the loading bay.

Maya breached the side utility door, dropping the second guard with a single clean shot from her suppressed pistol. The man collapsed beside the desk, sliding against the base of the primary server rack.

"Perimeter clear," Maya said, her voice low as she moved swiftly down the center aisle, her weapon raised toward the upper mezzanine. "No other thermal signatures inside the building."

Chloe ran up to the primary desk, sweeping a cluster of printed routing logs off the surface. She plugged her laptop directly into the proxy server's local diagnostic port.

"The core is already executing an automated wipe sequence," Chloe said, her fingers moving across her keyboard in a blur. "Julian's offshore backers triggered a remote purge the second our upload hit the public regulatory server!"

"Can you stop it?" Caleb asked, stepping up beside her and keeping his eyes on the dark upper walkways.

"I can't stop the wipe," Chloe said, sweat dripping down her forehead despite the chilled air of the server room. "It's hard-coded into the hardware firmware. But I can isolate the physical security token before the memory drive melts."

Lines of red code flooded her screen, scrolling at a dizzying pace as the proxy server began burning its own sector partitions.

"Ten seconds," Chloe whispered, her teeth clenching. "Come on..."

A loud metallic chime echoed from the server tower, followed by a thick puff of acrid white smoke rising from the ventilation fan. The blinking LEDs on the rack died one by one, going completely dark.

Chloe let out a long breath, slumping slightly against the desk. She clicked a small, metallic flash drive out of her laptop's side port and held it up.

"Got it," she said, her voice shaking slightly with relief. "The physical security token for the Zurich trust is intact. It contains the master routing key for the entire overseas network."

Maya walked over, looking at the small metal drive in Chloe's hand. "If that key opens the Swiss trust, we aren't just looking at Julian Vance's missing money anymore. We're looking at every shadow account operated by his financial partners across Europe."

"That's why they tried to burn the warehouse," Caleb said, taking the drive from Chloe and securing it inside his inner coat pocket. "Julian was just a mid-level manager running a local operation. The real authority behind Vanguard Capital sits in Zurich."

Before Maya could respond, a low, heavy vibration rumbled through the floorboards beneath their feet.

The heavy steel loading bay doors at the front of the warehouse didn't just open—they were blown off their tracks with a deafening explosion that shattered every remaining pane of glass in the building.

A shockwave of heat and flying debris tore through the central aisle, sending server racks crashing sideways like dominoes.

Caleb threw his arm over Chloe, shielding her as they were knocked off their feet by the blast.

Through the thick cloud of black smoke filling the loading bay, a heavy, armored transport vehicle smashed through the ruined doorframe, its high-intensity floodlights blinding through the gloom.

Heavy tactical boots hit the concrete.

Unlike Vanguard's local security team, these men wore unmarked gray combat uniforms, carrying specialized suppressive rifles equipped with laser aiming modules.

"Target secured in the main bay," a voice with a distinct European accent barked over a long-range radio transmitter. "Execute secondary containment. No survivors."

Caleb pulled Chloe behind a fallen server cabinet, his submachine gun raised as laser beams cut through the rising smoke.

Maya crawled up beside them, bleeding from a small scrape on her temple, her expression grim as she checked her magazine. "Those aren't corporate guards, Caleb. That's a professional private military contractor."

Caleb's eyes narrowed as he locked his grip on his weapon, watching the tactical team advance in a tight, overlapping fire formation.

"Julian didn't send them," Caleb said quietly, his voice cold as the first volley of heavy rifle fire chewed into the metal rack above their heads. "The Zurich trust just sent their cleanup squad."
