At Cairo – 5:30 A.M.

The air inside the compound grew heavier with the shrill wail of the alarm. It echoed through the metal walls, alerting everyone within earshot that the breach had been detected. The countdown had begun. Darius’s pulse hammered in his ears as the first wave of armed guards poured into the hallway, weapons drawn and eyes burning with fury. They had less than five minutes before the full lockdown took effect, and the compound’s defenses would be inescapable.

“Stay low, stay quiet,” Darius hissed, his voice cutting through the tension. He gestured for Amira to move up first. She was always faster on her feet, and they would need her agility to get them through the narrow corridors unscathed.

Amira’s eyes flicked over the hallway, her hand tightening around her handgun. “Got it,” she whispered back. Her fingers danced across the wall, pulling out the hidden stun grenades. “I’ll take out the front. You cover us.”

Without another word, she threw the first grenade, and the explosion of light and sound shook the hallway. The guards at the far end staggered, their vision blinded by the flash. Amira wasted no time, darting into the chaos, moving like a shadow. She took out two guards in quick succession, her movements calculated, deadly.

Cassia followed, covering the rear. She was the tech expert, but she had trained hard for moments like these. Her fingers stayed steady on her weapon, her eyes scanning the surroundings for threats. Darius moved behind them, his focus razor-sharp, as they advanced toward the exit.

But they were still a long way from safety.

At the Cairo Compound ,Hallways – 5:35 A.M.

The air felt suffocating, thick with the tension of the chase. Darius’s boots slapped against the cold concrete floor as they sprinted down the hallway. Another set of guards appeared at the far end, their shadows stretching across the floor before they were even visible. Darius’s instincts kicked in, his hand grabbing Amira’s arm and pulling her into a side passage just as the guards opened fire. The bullets ricocheted off the walls, narrowly missing them.

“Shit,” Amira muttered, her breath quickening. “We need to move faster.”

“We don’t have time to slow down,” Darius replied. His gaze shifted to Cassia, who was a few steps behind them. She was panting slightly, but there was no panic in her eyes—only determination. They had been through worse, and they weren’t going to let this stop them.

As they rounded a corner, Darius heard the unmistakable sound of footsteps—a lot of them. More reinforcements, probably a dozen or more. He knew that the outer gates wouldn’t be far, but they would never make it through the main hallway with the number of guards closing in.

“We have to split up,” he said, making a decision on the fly. “Cassia, you take the left corridor. Amira and I will take the right. Meet up at the extraction point.”

Cassia’s eyes narrowed, and she didn’t hesitate. “Got it. Just keep them alive,” she said, her lips curling into a smirk. “And don’t make it easy for them.”

She disappeared into the left corridor, leaving Darius and Amira alone to deal with the coming storm.

Cairo Compound – Security Room – 5:40 A.M.

The control room was a mess of flashing lights and static. The large security screen showed nothing but red, indicating a full lockdown, while an automated voice began issuing orders for the compound to go into full lockdown mode. But as the doors to the security room opened, Cassia moved silently inside. She slipped past the unconscious guards who had been caught in the stun grenade blast and took a seat at the main console. Her fingers flew over the keys, bypassing the firewalls and protocols with practiced ease.

“Come on, come on,” she muttered to herself, her pulse racing. She had only minutes before they’d be locked inside the compound indefinitely. Santiago’s men would come for them first, and there would be no way out.

With a few rapid keystrokes, Cassia’s fingers hovered over the ‘override’ button. One press, and the compound’s security would reset—giving them a window to escape.

But as she was about to press the button, the door to the security room slammed open. A guard, one of Santiago’s elite, stepped in. His eyes widened at the sight of her.

“Who the hell are you?” he shouted, reaching for his weapon.

Cassia didn’t hesitate. Her hand shot out, pulling a flashbang from her belt and throwing it at the man. The explosive burst of light and sound hit him in the chest, and before he could recover, she was on him. A swift strike to his throat incapacitated him in seconds, and Cassia was back at the console, her fingers pressing the override button just as the countdown reached zero.

The lock on the entire facility disengaged.

“Yes!” Cassia exhaled in relief, pulling her earpiece from her helmet. “Darius, Amira, the door’s open! We’re clear!”

At the Cairo Compound ,Main Hallway – 5:45 A.M.

Darius and Amira were halfway to the extraction point when the alarm cut off. The tension in the air lifted momentarily, but the momentary peace was short-lived. Their brief window of opportunity had been secured, but they still had to deal with the dozens of armed guards rushing to intercept them.

“Let’s go!” Darius shouted, pushing Amira forward. They were running now, the sound of their feet echoing off the metal walls. More gunfire rang out from behind them, but neither of them turned back. They were too close.

The extraction point was in sight—a small platform on the compound’s west side that led to a helicopter waiting to carry them to safety. But as they neared the platform, they saw Santiago’s personal guard—a massive wall of men, all armed to the teeth, blocking the path.

“End of the line,” one of the guards called, his voice echoing.

Darius didn’t slow down. In the space of a heartbeat, he was already charging at the wall of men, knocking one of them aside with a vicious blow to the face. Amira was right behind him, diving into the fray.

The fight was brutal—guns clattered to the floor, fists connected with bone, and the sound of combat filled the air. Darius took down one guard, then another, using his knowledge of their movements to his advantage. The clock was ticking down, and they couldn’t afford to waste time.

At the Extraction Point – 5:50 A.M.

Finally, with a last grunt of exertion, Darius and Amira cleared the last of the guards, their path finally open. The helicopter’s rotors hummed, lifting off the ground as they sprinted towards it, the cold desert wind whipping against their faces.

Cassia was already aboard, her eyes scanning the horizon as she noticed the two approaching. Without a word, she helped them up and secured the hatch.

“Go! Go! Go!” Darius shouted to the pilot.

The helicopter shot into the sky, the lights of the compound below shrinking into the distance. But as they ascended, Darius couldn’t shake the feeling that they weren’t done yet. Santiago would find them. He would come for them with everything he had.

“Did we win?” Amira asked, her voice a mixture of exhaustion and uncertainty.

“For now,” Darius answered, his eyes fixed on the horizon. “But this war isn’t over.”
