The first attack came three days later.

Cain was in the safe house. Reviewing intel. Planning the next move. The door was quiet. The world was quiet.

Then the phone rang.

"Kessler," he answered.

"We have a problem. Berlin. The cell we hit? It's back. Bigger. Angrier."

"How big?"

"Twenty operatives. Heavily armed. They've taken hostages. A government building. Demanding Volkov's release."

Cain stood. Grabbed his weapon.

"On my way."

He gathered the team. Lena insisted on coming. He didn't argue.

The world was quiet. Then the phone rang."Kessler," he answered."We have a problem. Berlin. The cell we hit? It's back. Bigger. Angrier.""How big?""Twenty operatives. Heavily armed. They've taken hostages. A government building. Demanding Volkov's release."Cain stood. Grabbed his weapon."On my way."He gathered the team. Lena insisted on coming. He didn't argue. Not anymore. They flew to Berlin. A private jet. Kessler's contacts. The world was still broken. But some things still worked. The building was surrounded. Police. Military. Everyone. But no one was moving."They'll kill the hostages," Kessler said. "If we storm in.""Then we don't storm in. We go in quiet.""How?"Cain studied the building. Old. Government. Multiple entrances."Service tunnels. Beneath the building. I can get in. Take them out one by one.""Alone?""Faster that way."Lena grab

  • THE DOOR OPENS

Cain reached for the door. Not with his hands. With his mind. With his soul. With everything he had left. The static surged. Not the quiet hum he'd lived with for years. A roar. A hurricane. The Strays froze. Turned. Faced him.Volkov's smile faltered. "What are you doing?"Cain didn't answer. He couldn't. The door was opening. He felt it. A crack in reality. A wound in the world.Cold poured through. Not the cold of winter. The cold of the void. The cold of death. The Strays screamed. Not in pain. In recognition.*You came back,* Sarah whispered. *You came back for us.*"I never left."The door widened. Light poured through. Not white. Not dark. Something else. Something impossible.Volkov stumbled back. "Stop! You'll destroy everything!""Maybe. But I'll destroy you first."Cain pushed harder. The door groaned. The walls shook. The bunker trembled. The Strays moved. Away from Volkov. Toward the door. Toward freedom."No!" Volkov screamed. "You're mine! I control you!"But he didn't.

  • THE KREMLIN

Moscow was a fortress.Cain watched from the truck. Checkpoints every block. Tanks in the streets. Soldiers with orders to shoot on sight.Volkov had turned the capital into a warzone. His warzone."We can't drive any closer," Kessler said. "They'll spot us."They parked in an abandoned garage. Moved on foot. Through alleys. Basements. Sewers. The city was silent. Curfew. No civilians. Just patrols. Just death.Marcus led them to a hidden entrance. An old subway tunnel. Decommissioned. Forgotten."This leads beneath the Kremlin," he said. "The old Soviet bunkers. Volkov's been using them for years.""How do you know about this?""I helped build them. Before everything went wrong."They entered. Darkness. Cold. The tunnel stretched for miles.Cain walked beside Lena. Her face was pale but determined."You okay?""No. But I'm here.""That's all that matters."They moved deeper. The tunnel narrowed. The air grew thick.Novak checked her tablet. "We're under the Kremlin now. The bunker is

  • THE LOYALISTS

Washington was burning. Not literally. But close. Protests in the streets. Riots. Chaos. Volkov's broadcast had lit a fire across the world.Cain watched from the truck. They'd crossed the border hours ago. Stolen vehicles. Back roads. No detection."The capital is locked down," Kessler said. "Military on every corner. Checkpoints everywhere.""We don't go through the front door."They ditched the truck outside the city. Moved on foot. Through alleys. Sewers. Shadows. The safe house was in Georgetown. An old brownstone. Unassuming. Forgettable.Cain knocked. Three times. Paused. Twice. The door opened. Marcus stood there. Alive. Whole."You made it," he said."Barely."They entered. The brownstone was a fortress inside. Screens. Weapons. People.Dozens of them. Men and women in tactical gear. Analysts. Operatives."The loyalists," Marcus said. "What's left of the real Agency."Cain looked at them. Their faces were tired. Scared. But determined."They're ready to fight?""They've been

  • THE NEXT MOVE

The truck broke down at dawn.Cain slammed the hood. Smoke poured from the engine. Dead."Perfect," Kessler said. "Just perfect."They were in the middle of nowhere. A road that led to nowhere. No towns. No help."How far to the nearest city?" Cain asked.Anna checked her phone. "Sixty kilometers. Maybe more.""Can we walk?""Not before nightfall. And Volkov's men are still out there."Cain looked at the team. Exhausted. Hungry. Running on fumes."We need another vehicle."They searched the area. Nothing. Just fields. Trees. Silence. Then Lena spotted it. A farmhouse. Abandoned. Overgrown."Maybe there's something there."They approached carefully. The farmhouse was empty. Dust. Cobwebs. But the barn behind it held a tractor. Old. Rusted. But functional."Can you drive this?" Kessler asked."I can drive anything," Cain replied. He hotwired it. The engine coughed. Sputtered. Then roared. They piled onto the tractor. Absurd. But moving. They reached the city by afternoon. A small town.

  • THE HUNTED

They walked for hours. The mountains stretched endless. Snow. Rock. Wind. No shelter. No food. No water.Cain led the way. His legs burned. His lungs screamed. But he didn't stop.Behind him, the team followed. Lena. Kessler. Marcus. Anna. Reyes. Langley. Novak.Seven people. Stranded. Hunted."They'll be looking for us," Kessler said. "Volkov won't let us escape.""He's wounded. His network is down. He'll need time to regroup.""Not much. He has resources. Contacts. He'll find us."Cain knew she was right. Volkov had escaped. He'd destroyed their vehicles. He'd left them to die in the mountains. But they weren't dead yet."We need shelter," Marcus said. "Somewhere to rest. Regroup.""There's nothing here. Just rock and ice.""Then we keep moving."They walked. The sun dipped below the peaks. Darkness fell. The cold intensified.Lena stumbled. Cain caught her."I'm okay," she said. "Just tired.""We all are.""We need to rest.""Not yet. Not until we find cover."They found a cave. Sm
