The heavy, metallic silence of the chamber was broken only by the sound of Diego’s ragged breathing and the faint, dying sizzle of the guardian’s short-circuiting core. The dark energy that had erupted from Renata’s fingertips hung in the air like a phantom scent—something cold, ancient, and utterly wrong.

Diego didn't move. He stood frozen, his hand still half-extended toward her, his eyes wide as he stared at the spot where the dark shield had been.

"Renata?" he whispered, his voice cracking. "What the hell was that?"

Renata didn't answer immediately. She was staring at her own palms, turning them over as if they belonged to a stranger. "I don't... I don't know, Diego. I really don't."

"You just stopped a ten-ton killing machine with a literal shadow," Diego said, his voice rising in pitch. "That didn't look like any 'System' power I’ve seen. It didn't have the blue light. It didn't have the math. It just felt like... like the world was dying where you touched it."

"Stop it," she snapped, her voice trembling. "You think I wanted that? I felt like my blood was turning into liquid ice. It hurt, Diego. It hurt so much."

"I’m not blaming you," Diego said, taking a cautious step back. "I’m just... I’m trying to make sense of this. The System called you a 'Key,' but it’s freaking out right now. Look."

He gestured into the empty air where his blue interface was flickering violently.

"It’s calling you a threat, Renata," Diego muttered, rubbing his face with his hands. "The thing that’s been keeping me alive is basically telling me you’re a walking bomb."

Renata looked up at him, her eyes glistening with tears. "Is that what I am to you now? A threat? Are you going to listen to that voice in your head and leave me here?"

"No! God, no," Diego said, shaking his head. "But we can't just ignore this. That energy... it’s still there, isn't it? I can feel it. The air is vibrating."

"It won't go away," Renata whispered, clutching her elbows. "It feels like there's a hole inside me, and the wind is just howling through it. Diego, I'm scared. I'm really scared."

"Keep it together," Diego said, forcing his voice to stay level even as his own heart hammered. "We need to move. That guardian wasn't alone, and that discharge probably just lit up a flare for every monster in the sector."

"I can't move," she gasped, her knees buckling. "My legs... they feel like they're made of lead."

Diego lunged forward, catching her by the shoulders before she hit the ground. The moment his skin touched hers, a sharp, electric jolt shot through his arms, making his teeth ache. He hissed, but he didn't let go.

"Damn, you're freezing," he gritted out. "Come on, Renata. Get up. We have to find an exit before the ceiling decides to join us on the floor."

"Did you hear that?" Renata asked, her head snapping toward the dark corridor they had just left.

"Hear what?"

"A clicking sound. Like... like those things from the ruins. But bigger. Lots of them."

Diego froze. He strained his ears, and then he heard it—a rhythmic, heavy tapping of claws against stone, echoing from the depths of the Forge.

"Great," Diego groaned. "Company's here. Can you walk? Please tell me you can walk."

"I’ll try," she said, leaning heavily on him. "Just... don't let me do that again. Whatever that power was. Don't let it happen."

"I don't think I have much say in the matter," Diego muttered.

Suddenly, the floor beneath them groaned. A massive crack webbed out from the center of the room, glowing with a faint, sickly violet light. Above them, a slab of obsidian the size of a car broke loose from the ceiling, crashing into the far corner of the chamber with a deafening boom.

"The place is falling apart!" Renata screamed.

"The shift!" Diego realized, his eyes darting to the flickering system alerts. "The guardian was holding the reality of this room together. With it dead, the sector is collapsing back into the void!"

Diego blinked as a new window forced itself into his line of sight, glowing a deep, bloody crimson.

[ LEVEL UP: AGILITY +15, INSTINCT +10 ]

"Now? You're giving me a level up now?" Diego yelled at the empty air.

"Diego, look out!"

Another piece of the ceiling shattered directly above them. In that split second, the world seemed to slow down. Diego felt a surge of heat in his thighs and calves—the raw energy of the System pouring into his muscles. He didn't think; he just acted.

He scooped Renata up in his arms, his movements blurring with a speed that made his vision streak. He vaulted over a rising ridge of stone just as the obsidian slab pulverized the spot where they had been standing.

"Whoa," Renata gasped, her hands locking around his neck. "Since when can you move like that?"

"Compliments of the apocalypse," Diego panted, skidding to a halt near the exit. "Hold on tight. We're going for a run."

"Where? The whole hallway is filling with that white mist!"

"Anywhere but here!"

Diego bolted into the corridor, his new agility making the world feel like it was made of cardboard. He dodged falling beams and leaping sparks with a grace he hadn't possessed five minutes ago. Behind them, the circular chamber finally gave way, sliding into a bottomless pit of golden static.

"It’s following us!" Renata cried, looking over his shoulder. "The floor is just... disappearing!"

"I see it!" Diego shouted. "Is there a door? Give me a door, a hatch, anything!"

"There! On the left! That glowing red light!"

Diego veered left, his boots barely touching the tiles as they began to dissolve. He reached the door—a heavy, pressurized bulkhead—and slammed his shoulder into the release lever. It didn't budge.

"Are you kidding me?" he roared, pulling at the lever with both hands. "Open up, you piece of junk!"

"Diego, the mist! It’s right behind us!"

The clicking sounds were closer now, emerging from the white haze. Half-formed shapes, insectoid and jagged, began to manifest in the dissolving reality, their red eyes fixed on Renata.

"They want you," Diego whispered, a chill running down his spine. "They’re not hunting us for food. They’re hunting the energy."

"Then let me go," Renata said, her voice small and hollow. "If they want me, maybe they’ll let you go."

Diego looked at her, his eyes hard and fierce. "Don't you start with that. We’re getting out together. That’s the deal."

He turned back to the door, his muscles bulging as he forced the System’s power into his arms. "Open... damn you... OPEN!"

With a scream of protesting metal, the lever snapped, and the bulkhead slid sideways just an inch. It was enough. Diego shoved his fingers into the gap and hauled the door open with a strength that made his bones creak.

"Get in! Go!"

He shoved Renata through the opening and dived in after her, kicking the door shut just as a chitinous limb slammed against the other side. The impact dented the heavy steel, but the lock held.

They both collapsed onto the cold floor of the new room, gasping for air. The space was small, smelling of old ozone and grease. It felt like a service elevator or a transition lock.

"We’re alive," Renata panted, clutching her chest. "We’re actually alive."

"For now," Diego said, sitting up and leaning his head against the vibrating wall.

He looked at his hands. They were shaking. The blue interface flickered back into view, but the text was garbled, shifting between languages he didn't recognize.

"Hey," Renata said softly, reaching out to touch his hand. This time, there was no spark. Just the warmth of a person. "Thanks. For not leaving."

Diego looked at her, his expression unreadable. "The System rewarded me for 'witnessing destruction,' Renata. It gave me more power because I watched you almost erase a god."

"And that scares you," she stated.

"It should scare you too," he replied. "We don't know what we are anymore. You’re a 'Key' that breaks reality, and I’m a 'Harvester' that gets stronger every time the world falls apart. We’re not just survivors. We’re part of the machinery."

"I don't want to be a machine," she whispered.

"Neither do I," Diego said, looking up as a low, mechanical hum began to resonate through the floor. "But I think the Architect is done playing games with us."

The walls of the small room began to shimmer. The solid metal turned translucent, then gray, then finally dissolved into a field of flickering white noise and falling pixels.

"Diego? What’s happening?" Renata’s voice sounded like it was being broadcast from a thousand miles away.

"The sector is gone," Diego said, reaching out to grab her hand one last time as the ground vanished beneath them. "We're falling into the source code."

The world turned to static, and then there was nothing but the sound of a heart beating against the void.

The silence in the Architect’s Forge was not empty; it was heavy, pressing against Diego’s eardrums like the weight of deep water. The hall was constructed from obsidian slabs that seemed to absorb the dim, rhythmic pulses of golden light emanating from the ceiling.Diego pushed himself off the floor, his muscles aching from the violent transition. He scanned the room, his eyes instantly locking onto the shifting geometric silhouette at the far end of the hall. It stood perfectly still, like a statue carved from a glitch in a video game."Diego? Are you hurt?" Renata’s voice was a shaky whisper behind him. She was already on her feet, rubbing her wrist where he had gripped her during the jump."I’m fine," he said, his voice taut. He didn't take his eyes off the figure. "Don't move. I don't think it’s seen us yet. Or maybe it’s just waiting."Renata took a tentative step forward, her sneakers making a soft scraping sound on the polished stone. "Is that the Architect? It looks… unfinish

Diego kept his eyes fixed on the crumbling concrete of the tunnel floor, his boots scuffing against the dust. The weight of Renata’s question hung in the stagnant air, heavier than the tons of ruined steel pressing down from above. He wasn't ready to answer it—he wasn't sure he even knew the answer himself."Don't read too much into it," Diego said, his voice clipped and strained. "It was just a tactical decision. You had information about the transit grid. That makes you valuable. Don't make it into a scene, okay?"Renata walked a half-step behind him, her eyes tracing the lines of his posture. "You’re lying through your teeth, you know."Diego stopped abruptly, his shoulders tensing. He turned, the weak light from the tunnel’s phosphorescent moss casting deep shadows across his face. "I’m not lying. I’m just trying to keep us both from becoming fertilizer for whatever is lurking in this hellhole. Why are you so obsessed with my motivations? We’re alive. He gripped Renata’s hand—her skin was ice-cold and slick with sweat—and he threw his body weight into a sprint, weaving through the jagged teeth of a collapsed office complex."Don't look! Renata gasped, her boots skidding on loose rebar."I don't know, and I don't want to find out! • Chapter 3: The Girl in the Ruins

The girl’s scream was short, sharp, and cut off abruptly, like a radio signal losing power. Diego didn’t think. The hesitation that had held him back moments ago—the moral weight of his own humanity—evaporated under the heat of pure, kinetic instinct. He didn't run; he blurred. His boots struck the debris with an unnatural silence, his body moving with a fluid, predatory grace that defied his own physical limitations. He swung around a leaning support pillar, catching sight of the plaza. The three creatures weren't just hunting; they were corralling. They moved with a mechanical, coordinated intelligence that made his blood run cold. The girl—Renata—was on her knees, desperately trying to pull a jagged piece of metal from a crack in the pavement. Her yellow raincoat, bright and incongruous against the gray ruins, was torn at the shoulder."Hey!"
