Chapter 1: A World of Ash and Silence

The silence was the first thing that clawed at Diego’s senses. It wasn’t the peaceful quiet of a library or a deep forest; it was the suffocating, hollow void of a world that had forgotten how to breathe.

Diego pushed himself up, his palms scraping against jagged, rusted metal. His breath hitched as a sharp, metallic tang filled his lungs. He blinked, the gray sky above blurry and swirling like dirty dishwater.

"What in the world… where am I?" he muttered, his voice sounding thin and foreign in the cavernous space.

He looked around. He was lying in the middle of a massive graveyard of twisted steel. Skyscrapers, or what was left of them, leaned at impossible angles, their skeletons exposed like rotting ribs. Cables dangled from broken beams like hanging vines, twitching in a breeze that carried no scent of life.

"Hello? Is anybody here?" Diego called out, his voice cracking. He scrambled to his feet, his knees trembling violently. "This isn't my room. This isn't… this isn't anywhere I’ve ever been. Hey! Anyone?"

He took a tentative step forward, his sneakers crunching on pulverized glass.

"Okay, Diego, breathe. You’re just dreaming. That’s it. A really bad, weirdly vivid nightmare," he said to himself, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Just wake up. Come on, wake up."

He pinched his arm. Hard. A sharp sting flared, leaving a red welt, but the scene didn't shift. The gray skyline remained, bleak and indifferent.

"No, no, no. This is real," he whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "This is actually happening. How? Why?"

A sudden, sharp clicking sound echoed through the wreckage—the sound of claws rhythmically tapping against concrete. Diego froze, his blood turning to ice. He ducked behind a rusted, overturned vehicle, pressing his back against the cold, corroded metal.

"Please don't let that be what I think it is," he hissed.

He peeked over the hood of the car. Emerging from the shadows of a collapsed archway was a creature that defied biology. It was roughly the size of a mountain lion, but its skin was an oily, chitinous black, shimmering with a sickly violet hue. Its face was a nightmare of mandibles and multiple, unblinking red eyes that scanned the debris with mechanical precision.

"Oh, god," Diego gasped, clapping a hand over his mouth. "What is that thing? Is that even real?"

The beast paused, its head tilting at a sharp angle. It let out a low, vibrating hum that seemed to rattle Diego’s very teeth.

"Don't see me. Please, don't see me," Diego pleaded, his eyes darting around for a weapon. He found nothing but loose rubble and rusted scrap. "Are you kidding me? Not even a piece of rebar? I’m going to die here. I’m actually going to die because I’m standing in a pile of junk."

The beast suddenly bolted, its speed blurring as it lunged toward his hiding spot.

"Look out!" Diego yelled, though there was no one to warn.

He scrambled backward, barely clearing the car’s fender before the creature slammed into the metal, crumpling the steel like paper. Diego didn't think; he bolted. His lungs burned, and his legs felt like lead, but the adrenaline surging through his veins pushed him forward.

"Get away from me!" he shouted, throwing a heavy piece of jagged debris behind him.

The creature swiped it aside with a limb that moved like a lash, the impact ringing out like a bell. It lunged again, pinning Diego against a wall. The beast’s mandibles clicked inches from his face, spraying a foul, acidic saliva that sizzled where it touched the ground.

"Get off!" Diego shrieked. He grabbed a piece of exposed wiring from the wall and shoved it into the creature's gaping maw, using his body weight to jam it deep.

The beast screeched—a sound like metal grinding on bone—and thrashed wildly. Diego didn't wait to see if it was dying. He scrambled underneath the wall’s overhang, his fingers tearing at the dirt as he dragged himself away.

"Stay back! Keep away!" he panted, his chest heaving.

The beast collapsed, its legs twitching as a clear, viscous fluid seeped from the wound. It was still alive, but it was failing.

Diego sat in the dust, hyperventilating. His hands were shaking so hard he couldn't keep them still.

"I did that? I actually survived?" he whispered, staring at his trembling hands. "I killed that thing? Or... did I?"

Suddenly, the world seemed to warp. The air grew heavy, static electricity dancing across his skin. A translucent, deep-blue interface flickered into existence directly in front of his eyes.

[ SYSTEM INITIALIZATION: 100% ]

[ CONGRATULATIONS: FIRST KILL RECORDED ]

[ KARMA SYSTEM ACTIVATED ]

"What the... what is that?" Diego stared, leaning back until he hit the wall again. "Is this a hallucination? Am I having a stroke?"

The text glowed, vibrating with a rhythmic intensity.

[ User: Diego Mahendra ]

[ Status: Bound to the Karma System ]

[ Warning: Your life force is now tethered to the harvest of essence. ]

"What are you talking about? 'Life force'? 'Harvest'? Hey, answer me!" Diego yelled at the floating window. "What is this? Who did this to me?"

The system didn't speak in a voice of flesh and blood, but a resonant, mechanical hum that echoed directly inside his skull.

“Life is currency, and death is the toll,” the voice echoed, cold and absolute. “You are the harvester, Diego Mahendra. To sustain your own existence, you must claim the essence of those who prowl the wastes. Kill, or be consumed by the void.”

"Wait, back up! I didn't ask for this!" Diego shouted, waving his arms through the translucent text. "I don't want to be a harvester! I want to go home!"

“Home is a memory, lost to the entropy of the old world,” the system responded, its tone indifferent to his plight. “Your purpose is redefined. The hunt has begun. Your survival depends on the tally of your karma.”

Diego looked down at the twitching corpse of the beast. The black chitin was beginning to dissolve into a fine, glowing mist, which then drifted toward him, seeping into his skin like liquid light.

"What—what is that? Get it off me!" he cried, trying to brush the light away, but it passed through his fingers as if he were made of smoke.

“Essence absorbed,” the voice declared. “Current Karma Level: 0.1. Vitality sustained. Seek your next target, Harvester. The void grows hungry.”

Diego stared at his palms, which now held a faint, lingering glow. He felt a strange, terrifying warmth spreading through his limbs, replacing the exhaustion with a cold, sharp alertness.

"No," Diego whispered, looking out into the sprawling, ruined horizon. "I'm not doing this. I'm not a killer."

The silence returned, but this time, he could hear the distant, skittering sounds of a dozen more creatures closing in from the shadows of the ruins. The system’s blue light dimmed, waiting for his next move.

"God help me," Diego breathed, his voice barely audible over the rising wind. "What have I gotten myself into?"
