The bright beam of a flashlight cut through the dark cave, splashing directly across my face.

I stood perfectly still in the middle of the broken rocks, holding Amina’s crushed letter tight in my left fist. In my right hand, the heavy dragon scale blade rested against my leg. My heart beat steady and slow. The fear that usually made my knees shake whenever these guild guards walked by was completely gone.

"What the look at that," the first guard said, stopping in his tracks.

The two men wore the thick leather armor of Tariq's private family guild. They were D-rank fighters, the kind of mid-level bullies who took pleasure in forcing poor sector workers to give up their daily food coins. The guard on the left had a heavy metal club on his shoulder, while the one on the right held a long steel spear.

They looked past me, their flashlights moving over the giant pile of dusty bones where the skeleton boss used to be. Then they looked at the dead Shadow Wolf lying in a pool of dark liquid nearby.

"How are you still breathing, garbage boy?" the second guard asked, his eyes widening. "And where did you get that sword?"

I did not answer them. My mind was focused entirely on Amina’s letter. She was trapped in the inner city with Tariq, acting like a traitor just to keep my family from being wiped out by the high-ranking guilds. Every second I wasted standing in this hole was a second she spent in absolute danger.

"I asked you a question, loser," the first guard said, stepping forward. He lifted his heavy metal club, his face twisting into an ugly expression. "It does not matter how you survived the wolf. We are here to finish the job anyway."

He swung the metal club straight at my ribs.

A few hours ago, his speed would have been too fast for my eyes to follow. But now, with my agility points boosted to forty-seven, his movements looked like they were happening underwater. I stepped to the side by a few inches, and the heavy club passed by my shirt, hitting nothing but empty air.

Before the guard could pull his weapon back, I thrust my elbow straight into his chest.

A loud thud echoed through the stone room. The force of my new strength sent the large man flying backward. He crashed into the stone wall of the cave, dropping his club as he slid down onto the dirt, gasping for air.

The second guard froze, his mouth falling open. "What kind of magic is this? You are an F-rank trash collector!"

He lunged forward in a panic, thrusting his steel spear toward my throat.

I did not use my sword. I reached out with my bare left hand, grabbed the metal shaft of the moving spear, and pulled it hard toward me. The guard was dragged forward by his own momentum. I used my right hand to strike the side of his neck with the flat side of my dragon blade.

The man dropped to his knees instantly, his eyes rolling back before he tumbled sideways into the mud, completely knocked out.

The first guard was still on the floor, coughing and trying to reach for a small black radio attached to his belt.

I walked over slowly, my heavy boots clicking against the stones. I placed the tip of my dark dragon blade right against his throat, just close enough to touch his skin.

"Touch that radio, and you will never move your hand again," I said. My voice sounded deeper, calmer, and colder than it ever had before.

The guard stopped moving immediately. His hands began to shake, and he looked up at me with absolute terror in his eyes. "Please... Kofi... we were just following orders. Young Master Tariq told us to do it. He said if we did not bring proof of your death, he would kick us out of the guild."

"Tell me about Amina," I demanded, leaning closer. "What is Tariq doing with her right now?"

"She... she is at the central estate," the guard stammered, his teeth clicking together. "They are planning a big binding ceremony next week to join their family powers. Tariq is keeping her close because her light magic makes his fire skills twice as strong. He does not let her leave his sight!"

My grip tightened on the hilt of my sword. She was a prisoner in a golden cage, using her mind to stall for time while I grew stronger.

"Give me the radio," I said.

The guard quickly unclipped the communication device and handed it over with trembling fingers. I took it, along with the keys to their armored truck.

I reached down and touched the guard's shoulder.

A faint light passed from his body into mine. The guard gasped, suddenly looking pale and weak, as if he had just run a marathon. He rolled over, fainting from the sudden loss of energy.

I held the small black radio up to my ear. Suddenly, the device static-hissed, and a familiar, arrogant voice came through the speaker.

"Hey, idiots," Tariq’s voice spoke from the radio. "Is the trash boy dead yet? Bring his torn shirt back to the hall. Amina is sitting right next to me, and I want to show her what happens to people who try to touch my things."

I looked down at the radio, my thumb pressing the talk button.

"Tariq," I said directly into the microphone.

The speaker went completely silent on the other end. I could hear the faint sound of music from the inner city party in the background before the music suddenly stopped.

"Kofi?" Tariq’s voice came back, sounding completely shocked. "How are you speaking on this channel?

"Tell your father's guards to stay away from the slum sector," I said, my voice steady. "Because I am coming out of this hole, and I am coming for everything you own."

Before he could answer, a loud, high-pitched alarm started blaring from the radio. At the exact same time, a red light began to flash on the cave ceiling near the iron gate. A heavy steel emergency barrier began to slide down from the rock above, sealing the entrance completely.

Tariq laughed over the speaker, his voice full of sudden madness. "You think you are tough because you survived some ants? I just locked the entire sector gate from the central tower. You are buried alive, trash boy."

The red numbers on the screen dropped to 02:59, and the silver tablet began to sizzle against the control desk."The magnetic lock is melting the ports," Amina said, her hands already moving across the backup wires beneath the console. She did not panic, but the tight lines around her mouth showed exactly how bad our situation was. "Tariq's father did not just start a timer. He sent a high-frequency pulse to destroy the core memory so nobody else can read the structural codes of the inner city."I threw my weight against the heavy steel security grille that had just blocked our only escape door. The thick metal bars did not even bend. My strength stat was high, but this bunker was built to withstand artillery strikes from the outer wars."Can you trace the pulse back to the central tower?" I asked, looking over my shoulder at her."I already did," Amina said, pulling a wire loose with a sharp snap. A spark bit her palm, but she did not blink. "But that does not help us if we are turne

  • The Forest Trap

The iron wolf lunged straight at Amina's throat. It did not make a sound as it leaped through the dark air, its heavy metal paws aiming to pin her to the dirt path. The green acid dripping from its metal teeth sizzled where it hit the wild grass. Amina did not freeze or fall backward. She pushed the silver master tablet behind her back with one hand while her other palm burst into a bright white ball of pure light magic. She thrust her glowing palm directly into the metal chest of the beast. The flash was blinding, sending a wave of hot light through the thick trees. The iron wolf let out a harsh mechanical click, its front legs buckling under the sudden force as it dropped back to the stone road. But the monster was a high-tier wild beast, far stronger than the low-level creatures inside the sector dungeon. The white light only scorched its outer shell, leaving its red optical eyes glowing brighter than before."Kofi, don't touch the mouth," Amina said, her voice fast and sharp as sh

  • Driving the Wedge

Amina was running for her life because she chose to protect my home. The weight of Jalo’s words pressed flat against my chest as I stood in the smoking courtyard. She had fooled an A-rank commander using nothing but a stolen radio and a massive gamble. The high-ranking guilds in the inner city did not tolerate liars, especially not a light magic user kept as a prisoner for her power. If Tariq caught her with that stolen master key, he would not just lock her in a cage anymore. He would drain her completely."Kofi, leave me," Jalo said, his voice dropping to a rough scraping sound. He pushed my shoulder with his weak hand. "The neighbors are returning to put out the fires. The guards are gone. If you stay here, you waste the time she bought for you."I squeezed his hand once, picking up my dragon-scale blade from the dirt. "Take care of yourself, old man. I will bring her back."I turned toward the main road and ran.My agility stat was working at its peak, making the ruined buildings

  • No Turning Back

Captain Vance did not move his sword. The yellow light from the blade cast long, dancing shadows over old man Jalo’s pale face."I will say it one more time, rat," Vance said, his face totally calm. "Drop the weapon and cross your wrists behind your back. If you take one step away from that old man, I will slide this blade through his chest."I looked down at Jalo, who was barely breathing. His hands were still clutching my ripped shirt, his fingers shaking against the fabric. If I dropped my sword, Vance would take me to Tariq, and we would both die anyway. If I fought him, Jalo might catch a stray blow from an A-rank warrior."Do not do it, Kofi," Jalo rasped, a fresh line of dark spit running down his chin. "Run. You have the bloodline now. You can survive outside the walls. Do not let them take it from you.""Shut up, old man," Vance said, stepping closer. The heavy gold plates of his armor clanked together. "Your life is worth less than the scrap metal you collect. Kofi, your thr

  • The Price of Fire

Running down the steep hill, I did not care about the sharp thorns tearing at my clothes. The only thing I could see was the bright orange fire consuming my neighborhood.Tariq was not waiting for me to come to the inner city. He brought the war straight to my doorstep.I hit the flat dirt road of Sector 4 at a full sprint. The air was thick with gray smoke and ash that made my eyes water. All around me, neighbors I had known for years were running in terror, carrying whatever small belongings they could lift. Behind them, guild soldiers in black leather armor walked casually, kicking down doors and throwing small fire glass spheres into the wooden houses. These fire glass spheres were cheap magic items used by high-ranking families to clear out old structures, but here, they were using them on living people."Find the scavenger's family!" a large soldier shouted, pointing a iron spear toward the end of the alley. "The Young Master wants them brought to the central square alive. The r

  • The Voice on the Other Side

"You cannot bury a scavenger," I said into the radio. The speaker static-hissed as I squeezed the black plastic casing. Tariq did not reply. He cut the connection from his end, leaving me in the flashing red light of the emergency alarm. The heavy steel barrier had slammed completely flat against the stone floor, sealing the cave entrance with six inches of solid metal.I walked over to the barrier and pushed my hands against it.D-rank Iron Skin activated. My palms took on a dull, metallic sheen as I shoved the steel wall. I grunted, straining my back, but the barrier did not budge. The gate was connected to the core power grid of Sector 4. To open it, I would need a strength score over two hundred, or a high-grade plasma explosive."Great," I spoke to the empty room. "Burying me alive is your best trick."The two fainted guards lay in the mud behind me, breathing slowly. They were safe from the monsters, but they were also stuck here until someone came to open the gate from the outs
