"Move, Kaizareth. If we stop now, the mountain air will freeze us before we even reach the valley."

"I am moving," he gasped, though his actions contradicted his words.

He dragged his left foot through the dirt, his chest heaving violently. Every breath was a ragged scrape. He stumbled, his knee striking a sharp ledge of granite. He didn't cry out, but his face went entirely pale, his knuckles whitening as he gripped a nearby pine branch to keep from tumbling down the slope.

"You're crawling,"

The damp, suffocating gloom of the drainage tunnels beneath the lower canal district offered little comfort, but it kept them out of sight from the burning timber-yard above. The air tasted of stagnant bilge water, rusted iron, and old decay. Kaizareth collapsed against the rough, slime-coated stone of a subterranean bridge pillar, his chest heaving as a violent fit of coughing wracked his frail frame. Every breath felt like inhaling crushed glass, a stark reminder that his body was rapidly failing him under the relentless strain of their flight.Across from him, crouched low in the shallow, freezing runoff, Nymeria winced as she began to unwind the stiff, charred strips of linen from her forearms. The heat-seal from the explosion had momentarily staunched the creeping advance of the brand-rot, but the cost was hideously visible. The skin wrapping her bones was blackened, blistered, and weeping a clear, sticky fluid."Don't look at it like that," Nymeria muttered through gritted teeth

  • Chapter 61: The Backdraft

The world dissolved into a blinding wall of white-hot magnesium light and a deafening, chest-compressing roar as the volatile timber-yard sap erupted. The shockwave hit Kaizareth like a physical blow, stripping the air from his lungs and sending a searing wave of heat over the shingle roof. Splintered cedar and burning resin rained down from the sky like fiery meteors, turning the damp morning air into a thick, choking veil of grey-black smoke.Coughing violently, his eyes stinging and watering from the acrid ash, Kaizareth scrambled backward on hands and knees across the buckling shingles. Through the rolling billows of smoke, a chorus of furious shouts and panicked curses echoed from the alleyway below."They're coming!" Nymeria’s voice cut through the din, sharp and breathless. She materialized out of the soot-stained haze beside him, her face smudged with black powder, her breath coming in ragged hitches as she gripped the edge of the sloping roof. "The ladder—now! Before the whol

  • Chapter 60: The Open Road

"You’re lying," Warden Jonas barked, his scarred hand tightening around the stock of his heavy crossbow as he took two steps closer to the towering timber stack. "The inquisitors want every trace of the mountain ash wiped from the lowlands. Dead or alive, the bounty is the same.""Is it?" Kaizareth countered, leaning casually against a rotting roof beam, though his breath came in shallow, ragged gasps. "Ask yourself why the High Prelate sent a low-tier tracker like you instead of an anointed Justiciar. He didn't want a recovery. He wanted a quiet execution before we could talk about the relics we pulled out of the caldera."Jonas hesitated, his gaze darting between Kaizareth’s hollow, aristocratic eyes and the dark, forbidding alley behind him. "Relics?""Now," Kaizareth hissed beneath his breath, throwing the single word backward over his shoulder.Nymeria didn't wait. Crouched behind the massive pine logs at the base of the timber yard, she ripped the stiff linen wrappings away from

  • Chapter 59: The Ignition of the Sap

"You have nowhere left to bleed," Warden Jonas shouted from the alley below, his heavy cross-bow resting lazily against his iron-plated breastplate. "Throw down the girl's arms and crawl out into the mud, scholar. We might spare you the rack."Kaizareth straightened, ignoring the raw burn in his chest, and stepped right to the edge of the sloping roof above the timber-yard. "Do you truly think the Iron Ring sent you here for a pair of branded arms, Jonas?" he called back, his voice dropping into that smooth, aristocratic cadence that commanded attention even in a sewer. "The inquisitors in the capital are hunting the master-vessel. If you kill us here, you destroy the only leverage you have to secure a seat on the high council."Jonas narrowed his eyes, pausing with one boot planted on a stack of damp cedar logs. "What did you say?""You heard me," Kaizareth pressed, taking a slow step forward, his fingers twitching in his pockets. "The mountain ritual wasn't an accident. We are carry

"They're coming up!" Kaizareth shouted, his boots slipping on the slick, rotting wood of the shingle roof as he hauled himself over the peak.Nymeria dropped to one knee, clutching her bandaged forearms against her ribs as a heavy iron crossbow bolt whined past her ear, splintering the chimney stack a handbreadth from her face. "Keep moving! Don't look down!""I can't—my legs are shaking—" Kaizareth stumbled, nearly pitching backward over the edge of the sloping roof before Nymeria grabbed the collar of his coat and yanked him hard into the shadow of a towering brick water-tank.Below them, in the narrow, muddy alleyway between the tanneries, Warden Jonas stepped out from the shadows, his face an expressionless mask of scarred leather. He raised a mailed hand, signaling his men to hold their fire."You can run across every rooftop in Oakhaven, little rats," Jonas called out,

  • Chapter 57: The Rooftop Flight

"Get up, Nymeria," Kaizareth hissed, his voice cracking with panic as the heavy oak door of the cellar splintered inward with a deafening crash. "They’re here!"Nymeria stumbled to her feet, her face drained of color, her newly cleansed arms wrapped tightly in stiff, blood-spotted linen. "The widow," she spat, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. "She sold us out.""No time," Kaizareth grabbed her by the good shoulder, hauling her toward the narrow, grease-stained ladder leading up to the roof hatch. "Move, or we die in this filth!"Heavy boots thudded against the floorboards below them, accompanied by the cold, metallic rattle of iron armor and drawn swords."Search the corners!" a harsh, gravelly voice echoed from the foot of the ladder—Warden Jonas, ruthless and unyielding. "The informant said the girl was leaking golden pus. Look for the stains!"
