46. A Line, Not A Street
[Day-52 (09:07)](Seal Row, Sector 9, Alexandria) "Go on," Oren said. His voice was quite calm. "I mean it. Go on without me and get your stamp." "The stamp goes on the thumb." "Then take the thumb." He nodded at his left boot. "There's a knife in there. It's only a finger. I've got nine more, I'm told they're very common." The joke fell flat on the stones, and he looked at it, and then at Kai. "I'm joking." "I know you are. Shut up and get your face out of the pie." Oren shut up. Kai had wanted that for a minute, and now he wished he hadn't. Kai got down on one knee beside him. Six strokes gone and three to go, and the top of the Row was still forty paces off, with the tower over it. He looked at the hill. *I can't make it in two. I can't lift him. I can't cut him loose. And he still sees us, he's seen us every time.* The pull had been sliding them while they talked. Oren's knees had gone across the stones a yard or more, out from the wall toward the middle of the Row,
45. Cooper's Stair
[Day-52 (09:04)](Cooper's Stair, Seal Row, Sector 9, Alexandria) The third stroke came up through the soles of his boots first, a low flat note, and the string on Oren's thumb went from slack to bar-straight in less than a breath. The cord sang. Oren's belt cut into his coat, and his feet left the cobbles. In the hush after the bell, a voice came up the slope. It shouldn't have carried. It was dry and level and very plain, the voice of a man reading a name off a list. *"Vinctor, tene."* The bracket went with a crack like a plank breaking. It came out of the brick with a fist of mortar, bent double under the strain, and the cord whipped and sang, and Kai and Oren were dragged down the slope together on their heels, ten paces, with the cobbles going by. Kai got a hand into the belt. He got a boot against a kerb. The pull stopped them there as though a hand had been taken off a throat. Above them, the bracket hung off the corner of the wall by one bolt, bent over like a finger, poi
44. The Pull
[Day-52 (09:02)](Seal Row, Sector 9, Alexandria) The stroke rolled down the slope and out through the doors, and the Row filled with people. They came out of every doorway and side lane at once, with one arm held out in front of them and the thumb pointing, and all the thumbs pointed the same way, at the red lamp at the bottom of the hill. A woman came out of the string shop with her apron still tied on. A man in a baker's hat walked out of a yard backwards, hauled by his own hand. They didn't run. They walked as if the street were tipped, and they were all very frightened and very polite about it, and every one of them was walking straight down the slope. Between each thumb and the lamp ran a line. Kai saw the first one on Oren's hand and followed it down the Row with his eyes. It was thin as thread and the colour of weak tea, and it went through a barrow and a pillar and the side of a cart as though they weren't there. Then he saw the others. They came from every direction and g

[Day-52 (08:56)](Seal Row, Sector 9, Alexandria) Seal Row was narrow and dim and smelled of hot wax. It ran up a long slope between stamp-cutters, wax chandlers and a man selling string by the fathom, and at the bottom of the slope, under a red lamp lit in broad daylight, stood a low door with four worn steps in front of it. They had come into the Row from a side lane at the foot of it. Kai looked up the slope. The street climbed straight and grey until it met the sky, and he couldn't see where it ended. Oren had stopped at the foot of the steps. Kai took him up them and in. The front room was four paces wide. A counter of dark wax ran across it, poured in layers over a hundred years, and the top was printed all over with thumbs, thousands of them, overlapping like scales. Behind it the wall was all pigeonholes, and in each hole lay a red wafer with a name and a number inked underneath. A stove in the corner kept a pot of wax warm. Above it a brass regulator ticked, and its long h
42. A Hundred And Thirty-Six
[Day-52 (08:40)](The yard behind the Writ Hall, Sector 9, Alexandria)The side door let onto a yard where the grain carts used to turn, with a pump and a wall and a row of crates for people waiting on somebody inside. Oren was sitting on one of them with his right hand held in his left against his stomach, the way a man carries a bird. He was still in the pocket coat, and all seven pockets were quiet. His face had gone the grey of a washed shirt."There you are," he said. "Don't look at me like that. I've only just got here.""You said you'd be at your mum's till noon.""I was. I am. I mean I was." He tried a grin, and it got about halfway. "I thought I'd come and see the board. Everyone says it's a sight. Besides it's Quarter day - can't exactly skip it or something.""It is." Kai stood in front of him. "Show me the hand.""It's nothing - don't worry about it. It's gone to sleep. I slept on it.""You slept in your mum's chair. You told me, in case they came early." Kai waited. "Did
41. Quarter Day
[Day-52 (08:25)](The Writ Hall, Sector 9, Alexandria)The Writ Hall had been built to hold grain, and it still smelled of it. Three queues ran the length of the floor between brass posts and red rope, and nobody had drawn them to the same scale. The commons stood on the left, four abreast, doubled back on themselves twice and shuffling toward a desk under a hand-lettered sign: COMMONS. WAIT HERE. A strip of green carpet ran down the middle with six chairs on it and no queue at all. The clerk at the Sponsored desk walked to each person and brought the forms with him. On the right a sister of the Basilica, a gold lamp in a ring pinned to her left shoulder, stood at the head of a line of young people in grey wool, two by two. They carried nothing. They would only have to sign.Kai had taken a place against a pillar near the middle, hands in his coat, as if he were waiting for someone who was late. He read the board first. It hung over all three desks in white letters a hand high, and th
