Chapter 1

Harrison stood at the entrance of the city hall waiting for Janet Edward, a banquet of fresh roses grip tightly in his hand. A hopeful smile played on his lips as he adjusted his well-tailored black suit. His brown hair was styled neatly backward, and his eyes sparkled with barely contained excitement. Today was supposed to be the beginning of forever.

They had agreed yesterday to meet at 10 AM to get their marriage license. After five long years together, he was finally going to make Janet his wife. He glanced at his wristwatch again. He had arrived thirty minutes early, heart full of anticipation.

An hour passed, then another thirty minutes, still Janet hasn’t showed up.

The smile on Harrison’s face slowly faded. He pulled out his phone and stared at the screen, his thumb scrolling through the messages he had sent her. The first ten were marked read without reply. The rest showed a single, damning red exclamation mark. She had blocked him.

A sharp sigh escaped his lips. He ran a hand through his carefully styled hair, ruining it, and began dialing her number again and again. Ten missed calls, fifteen, each one went straight to voicemail.

The color drained from his face. His shoulder slumped as he lowered the phone, the roses suddenly feeling heavy in his grip. “Again…?” he whispered, his chest ached. “Janet… Why?”

Tears brimmed in his eyes. In five years of dating, she had stood him up on dates before, but this? This was their marriage license. The one thing that was supposed to prove their love was real, and never had he imagined she would disregard it.

Was everything she said a lie? Does she even care about me at all? The thought pierced his chest like a blunt knife. He bit down hard on his lower lips to stop it from trembling. She always does this… always ignoring how I feel.” He sniffled.

He smiled bitterly, with a heavy heart, he tucked the documents back into his bag, and was about to leave when his phone buzzed. Hope flared wildly in his chest. He fumbled to open the message, praying it was Janet with some excuse. Instead, it was from a classmate.

Harrison reluctantly opened the message and his eyes dilated as he read the text. “Dude, stop waiting, your girlfriend just said yes to someone else’s proposal at the girl’s dormitory entrance.”

Harrison’s hand trembled violently. His knees nearly buckled as he opened the attached photo. There she was, beaming with joy, standing beside a tall, well-dressed man holding flowers, a crowd of girls cheering around them.  .

“No…no…” Harrison shook his head in disbelief, devastation crashed over him like a tidal wave. His chest tightened until he could barely breathe. Without hesitation he rushed out of the city hall, flagging down a taxi, he rushed back toward the university, heart shattering with every passing second.

The moment Harrison stepped out of the taxi, the scene hit him like a physical blow. Janet stood there, radiant, her arm linked with a smug-looking young man. She wore the same bright smile she used to give him, as if she hadn’t just broken his heart.

“Janet!” He called out, his voice cracked as he stepped closer, rose still clutched desperately in his hand.

Janet turned to him, their eyes met but there was no guilt in her eyes, no remorse, just mild annoyance. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, not bothering to step away from the man who had just proposed.

Harrison’s eyes shifted between them, his throat burning. “Why?” He asked, struggling to keep his voice leveled. Pain and confusion bled into every word. “Why did you say yes to him? Weren’t we supposed to meet at 10 AM at the city hall for our marriage license?”

Janet sneered, looking him up and down with open contempt. “You are just a poor student, Harrison. I am the heiress of the Edward family. Why on earth would I get a marriage license with someone like you?”

She linked her arm more tightly with the man beside her. “This is David Hart, the only son of the nation’s richest man and the true heir of the Hayes family. He is my chosen fiancé.”

Harrison laughed to himself bitterly, because he was the true heir to the Hayes family. He parted his lips about to reveal his real identity but the words died on his tongue.

He looked at Janet and thought to himself. ‘Is our five years of feelings really this cheep? Lost to a false identity?’ He stared at the woman he thought he knew. Is this still the same girl who had risked her life to save me all those years ago?

He drew a sharp, painful breath and looked at Janet. “Who did you say the heir to the Hayes family is?” he asked, gesturing toward David. “That guy?”

“Of course,” Janet said arrogantly, lifting her chin “Who else could it be? You?” she scoffed, her voice loud enough for the gathering crowd to hear. “Your whole outfit doesn’t cost more than a hundred dollars. I’d be embarrassed to be seen with you in public. I suggest you agree to break up quietly and stop pestering me, otherwise David will not let you off easily!”

David smirked, puffing out his chest. “Bro, she is my girlfriend now.” He said. “If you keep bothering her, I will have you disappear without a trace with just a snap of my finger.”

Harrison stared at Janet in disbelief. Ten years ago, he was deliberately pushed into a lake in a park and nearly drowned. A little girl saved him at that time. He was barely unconscious and couldn’t make out her face, but he managed to give her the precious jade bracelet his late mother left him.

His eyes dropped to the bracelet on Janet’s wrist. “Since that’s how it is… give me back the bracelet.”

Janet’s face twisted in disgust. “You must be crazy from poverty. Why on earth would I give you my bracelet?” She shouted. “I got this from Mia. What does this bracelet have to do with you?”

Her dismissive words hit Harrison like a slap. His pupils dilated in shock. He processed her words and the truth crashed over him. It was never Janet. The girl who saved him was Mia, and he had been thanking the wrong person all along.

Anger, betrayal and disappointment swirled inside him. He ran a hand through his hair, trying to steady himself, he turned to David. “Are you really the heir to the Hayes family?” He asked.

David shifted uncomfortably for a split second before regaining his arrogance. “Of course I am the heir to the Hayes family.” He held his head high. “Someone ordinary like you doesn’t even deserve to stand in front of me.”

“He is right. You don’t deserve to meet him.” Janet snapped, immediately jumping to David’s defense.

Harrison’s lips curled into a cold, disdainful smile. He looked at Janet. “The Edward’s family businesses span the entire country, yet their heiress can’t even judge people correctly. If the Edward family ever falls into your hands, what kind of future could it possibly have?”

Janet’s brows snapped together in fury. “You are just a penniless student. What right do you have to criticize the Edward family?” She stepped closer, eyes blazing. “I am the heiress of the Edward family. I achieved this position entirely through my own efforts. Tomorrow night at the banquet, I will secure a major contract with Diamond Global, all thanks to David’s connection. You’re not even qualified to work as a security guard at Diamond global.”

She touched David’s arms flirtatiously, voice dripping with superiority. “I worked so hard to reach this position. Staying with you would only drag me down and ruin my status.” She glared at Harrison.

Harrison stood motionless. The woman he had loved for five years was gone, replaced by someone he no longer recognized.
