Janet stepped closer to Harrison. His hands clenched tightly at his sides, knuckles turning white as fury and heart break coursed inside his chest. She leaned in until her lips brushed his ear, her voice dropped into a whisper.
“If you really can’t let go of me,” she purred, her warm breath sending unwanted shivers down his spine. “I will allow you to stay as my secret lover.”
She pulled back slowly, her eyes tracing his tall, athletic frame with clear appreciation. At 6’1, with broad shoulders, long straight legs, a sharp jawline, thick brows, pale blue eyes, and a perfectly sculpted nose. Harrison was devastatingly handsome. Janet had always loved his looks and physique. But as heiress of the Edward family, she needed power and status more than attraction. A poor student could never help her solidify her position.
Harrison’s stomach twisted with disgust. She was offering him scraps while parading another man as her fiancé. Without a word, he causally tossed the flowers in his hand into the trash.
He slid off the matching couple’s ring they had made together off his finger, and threw it at her feet. It clattered loudly on the ground.
“The Edward family is truly unfortunate to have someone like you as their heiress,” he said, his voice filled with cold anger. He clenched his jaw. “You’ll ruin the family’s reputation.” He pointed at her, eyes burning with betrayal. “Remember this, Janet. It’s not you breaking up with me, it is me dumping you. Now get lost.”
Janet’s face flushed with humiliated rage. “Don’t you dare call yourself my ex-boyfriend in the future.” She shot back venomously. “It would be too embarrassing if people found out I was ever with someone like you.” She lifted her chin arrogantly, linked arms with David, and walked away with her head held high.
Harrison stood frozen, watching her retreating figure. The pain in his chest felt suffocating. He rubbed the emerald ring on his left finger and recalled a memory from five years ago.
Back then, his butler had taken him to meet Mr. Edward, the head of the Edward family. Mr. Edward had acknowledged the ring as Harrison’s authority. Whoever Harrison chose would become the rightful heir to the Edward family.
What made Janet think she became the heiress through her own efforts? Harrison thought bitterly. It is my choice to decide who the heir would be.
Harrison headed back home. When he arrived, the butler approached him, bowing respectfully. “Master Harrison, will you be attending tomorrow evening’s banquet, the company president, Ms. Greta has personally invited you?”
“I won’t go.” Harrison replied without hesitation, still simmering with angry, but as he reached his bedroom door, Janet’s earlier boast echoed through his mind, how she would secure a contract with Diamond Global thanks to David.
He paused and turned to the butler. “Is the banquet related to Diamond global?”
“Yes, young master.” The butler confirmed.
Harrison’s expression darkened. He owned six major companies in the city with Diamond Global holding the highest market value. Combined with his hundreds of billions in overseas assets, he controlled immense power. This year’s projected bidding alone was five hundred million, and many companies are eager to get a piece of the pie.
The butler studied his young master’s stormy face. “Shall I reject this invitation as well?”
Harrison let out a sharp, bitter sigh. A dangerous smirk slowly curved his lips. “Inform Ms. Greta that I will attend.” His voice turned icy. “Also, cancel all cooperation with Edward Group and remove Janet Edward from the guest list.”
He continued issuing orders with calm authority. “Investigate a woman named Mia and a man named David Hart. I don’t know Mia’s full name, but find her. I need to confirm if she’s truly the one who saved me… and expose whoever dares impersonate the Hayes heir.”
“Yes Master Harrison.” The butler nodded.
“And notify the Edward family that the engagement is canceled and all of Janet’s privileges are revoked immediately.”
The butler blinked in surprise but nodded and quickly left to carry out Harrison’s order.
Alone in his room, Harrison shrugged off his coat and loosened his tie. He ran a hand through his hair in frustration, Janet’s cruel words replaying endlessly in his head. The tears he had been holding back finally rolled down his cheek.
“I loved her for years.” He scoffed bitterly, swallowing the lump in his throat. He pushed the painful memories down, trying to bury them.
Just then there was a knock on his room door. “Come in.”
The butler pushed the door open and stepped in, holding a file. “Master Harrison, this is the information on Mia you requested.” He said, handing him a file.
Harrison glanced through the file, his eyes widened with urgency. He quickly grabbed his coat and left the house, heading straight for her address to directly visit her.
Outside Mia’s villa, Harrison’s assistant called out her name loudly, but no one answered the door.
After a long wait, an elderly woman finally came to the door, her face twisted with annoyance as she looked at the assistant.
“What is all the shouting about?” She snapped. “Is our young lady name something you can just yell freely?” Her brows arched. “Our young lady is getting married today to Mr. Jacob Bryan, a wealthy man. Her status will rise greatly from now on.”
The old woman gave them a dismissive once-over and let out an exasperating breath. “She is not someone just any stray cat or dog can call out to.” She added.
Harrison was startled. His blood ran cold at the name Jacob Bryan’s name. It was a name often seen in entertainment news headline.
Jacob Bryan was known as a notorious wealthy playboy, and Harrison had heard that the man had married six wives, none of whom had lived longer than three days after marriage.
“Damn it!” Harrison cursed under his breath, heart pounding with fear for Mia. He quickly got into his car. “Drive to Jacob Bryan’s house, now!” He instructed the driver.
Inside Jacob Bryan’s luxurious mansion, Mia had been thrown roughly onto the floor. Tears streamed down her face as she stared up at Jacob in pure horror. Her body felt heavy, her mind foggy from whatever her stepmother had drugged her with.
Jacob rubbed his hands together greedily and lunged at her, immediately trying to tear off her clothes. They were still in the main hall, but the servants had all disappeared. They knew better than to interrupt their master’s pleasure.
“Don’t touch me!” Mia screamed, struggling frantically. Jacob slapped her hard across the face, her cheek burned fiercely.
“Quiet!” He snarled. “Stay still or I will kill you right here.”
Mia’s whole body trembled violently. Her lips quivered as the drug pulled her into darkness. Her limbs grew weak, making it harder to fight him off. Jacob chuckled darkly, trailing wet kisses down her neck while his hand caressed her thigh, completely ignoring her tears and desperate pleas.
Just then, Harrison kicked the door open and burst inside, his eyes blazing with murderous rage at the horrific scene before him.
“Let her go!” Harrison roared, his voice echoing through the hall. Jacob froze mid-motion. “Who gave you the audacity to touch my woman?”
