Vanessa's heart tightened. "Where are you?"

"At my apartment."

"I'll come over immediately." The words escaped her before she could think. Then she stopped and her eyes unconsciously moved toward Darren.

She remembered the promise she had made him. She had promised to keep her distance from Adrian.

Darren was sitting opposite her, his expression already cold after the repeated calls.

Vanessa swallowed. "No." She quickly corrected herself. "You should call emergency services. I'll arrange for someone to come and check on you."

On the other end, Adrian was silent for a moment. Clearly, he hadn't expected that answer.

"Alright." Adrian's voice sounded disappointed. "Thank you."

The call ended.

Darren had watched everything without saying a word. Yet he had noticed the moment Vanessa changed her response.

For the first time that evening, the icy darkness in his eyes eased slightly. At least she had remembered her promise and she hadn't immediately rushed to Adrian.

Vanessa put her phone down. "Let's continue." She tried to smile.

Darren nodded and they resumed dinner.

But the warmth from earlier was gone. The candles still flickered between them, the city lights still glittered below, and the music remained soft and romantic. Yet neither of them felt the romance anymore.

Vanessa picked up her fork, but she barely touched her food. Every few minutes, her eyes drifted toward her phone. She tried to hide it but Darren noticed every time.

Finally, the phone remained silent for several minutes.

Vanessa couldn't bear the uncertainty anymore, so she put down her fork. "Darren... I think I should go check on Adrian."

Darren's expression immediately hardened. "You want to leave?"

Vanessa hesitated. "I just want to make sure he's alright."

Darren stared at her. "Tonight is our birthday. Our shared birthday."

He glanced at the candles.

"You promised me that no matter what happened, you wouldn't leave again, and I came here because I believed you. And now that you've finally brought me here, you want to leave again?"

Vanessa's heart ached. "I know how this looks. But what if he's seriously injured? He said the microwave exploded. I can't just sit here and pretend I didn't hear that."

Darren laughed bitterly. "So you're going."

Vanessa lowered her eyes. "I'll only be gone for a little while. I'll confirm that he's okay, and then I'll come straight back."

Darren stared at her for a long time.

Something inside him gradually went numb. "Vanessa." His voice became colder. "If you walk out of that door tonight, there may be no way for us to return to what we were."

Vanessa's heart trembled. She looked at him with tears beginning to gather in her eyes.

"Darren, I love you. I truly do. I've never stopped loving you. But if someone is genuinely in danger, I can't simply ignore them. Saving someone's life is more important."

The last trace of warmth disappeared from Darren's eyes. He didn't argue but simply looked at her.

Vanessa picked up her handbag and turned toward the exit.

Just before she reached the door, Darren spoke.

"Wait."

Vanessa stopped, and Darren reached down beside his chair and picked up a file bag. He removed a document.

"Sign this before you go."

Vanessa looked confused. "What is it? A contract related to the arms business?"

She glanced at the document. "If that's what it is, I'll sign it when I come back."

Darren shook his head. "No. You'll sign it now."

Vanessa frowned. Even though Adrian was injured, she knew the company was also in a critical period. There were several supplementary agreements and documents that required her signature.

She looked at the thick document.

"You've been helping move the process forward. I know how important these papers are."

Her anxiety over Adrian competed with her awareness of the company's urgent affairs. She had no time to waste.

Without reading the document, Vanessa flipped through the pages quickly until she reached the final page, then she quickly signed her name.

"There." She handed the document back and Darren accepted it.

His expression remained unreadable.

Vanessa immediately picked up her handbag. "I'll be back soon. Please wait for me. If you're hungry, don't wait. Eat first." She smiled apologetically, then she left.

Vanessa arrived at Sterling Group early that afternoon, her attention completely focused on the sudden changes to the company's largest arms contracts.Inside the command center, dozens of large screens displayed production schedules, shipping routes, inventory levels, and factory reports. Senior executives stood around the conference table, reporting one issue after another. After the meeting, she personally walked through the weapons research and production department, carefully inspecting every stage of manufacturing. Only after finishing the inspection did she finally return to her office. She had barely sat down when there was a knock.Adrian walked inside carrying two cups of freshly brewed coffee. He wore a clean white shirt and dark trousers. Aside from the faint bandage still wrapped around his injured hand, he looked composed.Vanessa immediately stood up. "What are you doing here?" She hurried toward him. "I told you to rest."She looked at the bandage with concern. "Your h

Darren looked at her without speaking. His silence made Vanessa nervous. She searched his face carefully, afraid she would find only coldness. Instead, after several long seconds, she noticed that the ice in his eyes had softened ever so slightly. It was barely noticeable. But Vanessa knew him too well. She immediately realized that the wall around his heart had loosened just a little. Joy quietly blossomed inside her. Not wanting to miss this rare opportunity, she smiled gently. "Since today is our birthday, I've already prepared a surprise." "What surprise?" Darren finally raised his eyes to look at her. "I booked the rooftop of the Imperial Crown Restaurant. It's completely private. No other guests. Just the two of us. A candlelight dinner." She squeezed his hand. "I planned it long before everything happened. I wanted us to celebrate our birthday together. And, this time, no matter what happens, I won't leave again." She looked at him seriously. "I'll stay with you the

Late that night, Vanessa's phone rang. It was Anita. After learning that Darren had moved into the guest room, Anita immediately asked what had happened. Vanessa sighed heavily before venting all of her frustration. "Darren is being unbelievably narrow-minded. He refuses to listen to any explanation and keeps insisting that I fire Adrian. He wants me to cut all contact with him." She frowned. "I've already told him there's nothing inappropriate between Adrian and me. I absolutely refuse to fire him. It would be completely unreasonable, because Adrian hasn't done anything wrong." "Vanessa, Darren's anger is completely understandable. No man can calmly watch his wife become that close to another man." Vanessa frowned. "But—" Anita interrupted gently. "Then answer me honestly. If Darren became extremely close to another woman. If he constantly abandoned you to take care of her... If they hugged, and she accidentally kissed him. How would you feel?" Vanessa opened her mouth

Vanessa's expression immediately darkened. Instead of reflecting on Darren's accusations, she looked at him with obvious disappointment. "I really didn't expect you to think this way." Her voice was filled with frustration. "Everything you're saying is based on your own assumptions. You keep imagining things that have never happened. There has never been anything improper between Adrian and me. You've already decided he's guilty without any evidence." Her tone became increasingly firm. "I honestly don't understand you anymore. You have no compassion at all. When someone is injured, all you care about is your own feelings. When someone works through illness for the sake of the company, instead of respecting his dedication, you only suspect him." "You can't even see reality anymore. He was a patient who needed someone to care for him. He was an employee who kept working despite being physically weak. Yet in your eyes, every act of kindness becomes evidence of an affair." Darren s

Vanessa let out a long sigh. "You really are more understanding than most people, and more reasonable."Adrian looked up in surprise. "I don't deserve that praise.""You do." She shook her head. "Darren is simply too emotional right now. He isn't seeing things rationally, but blinded by jealousy. He has already decided what he wants to believe. I don't think he'd listen to anyone's explanation right now.""If that's the case..." Adrian said softly. "Then maybe I should talk to him myself. I never meant to come between the two of you or cause an argument. If I apologize to him face-to-face, maybe he'll understand."Vanessa immediately shook her head. "No. It won't help. Right now, Darren is too narrow-minded to listen. Whatever you say, he'll only think you're making excuses." She sighed. "We'll wait. When he calms down, I'll explain everything myself."Her words clearly revealed where her emotions currently stood. Rather than believing Darren's concerns, she instinctively chose to bel
