Inside the luxurious Aurora Palace Hotel, Darren Vale stood quietly beside the bed, his eyes fixed on Vanessa Hartwell as she slowly removed the final layers of her wedding dress.

The elegant white gown slipped gently onto the marble floor, leaving her standing in delicate silk beneath the warm glow of the night lights.

For a moment, Darren simply looked at her.

After three long years together—three years of love, sacrifice, and waiting—they were finally husband and wife!

Everything he had endured in his life suddenly felt distant and unimportant compared to this single moment.

Three years ago, Darren walked away from a terrifying world of power, bloodshed, and endless war. For Vanessa, he abandoned the identity that had once made entire nations tremble in fear—the undefeated war god known only by a single name: NIGHTREIGN.

Vanessa was the only life he wanted.

“Vanessa,” Darren whispered softly as he stepped closer, his hand settling gently against her waist. “I love you. I’m happy I’ll get to spend the rest of my life with you.”

Emotion flickered through his usually calm eyes.

He pulled her slowly into his arms and kissed her deeply.

“Darren...” Vanessa breathed softly against his lips.

His voice trembled faintly as his rough palm rose to caress her delicate cheek.

Vanessa lifted her chin slightly and closed her eyes. A trace of shy anticipation appeared across her beautiful face as she leaned into his touch.

The scent of roses and red wine lingered in the room while the city lights shimmered beyond the windows.

Darren’s fingers brushed gently along her collarbone before sliding toward the clasp behind her silk lingerie.

Vanessa’s breathing grew uneven as her arms wrapped tighter around his neck, holding him close as though afraid the moment might disappear.

A moment later, they fell gently onto the bed together, still wrapped in each other’s embrace. Their foreheads touched, their breaths mingled, and the atmosphere between them grew warmer and more intimate with every passing second.

Just as they were about to lose themselves completely in the moment—

Buzz. Buzz. Buzz.

The sudden vibration of a phone shattered the silence.

Vanessa frowned faintly and glanced toward the bedside table, where her phone screen continued lighting up over and over again.

The ringing persisted relentlessly, sharp and intrusive against the peaceful quiet of the room.

Darren’s brows furrowed slightly.

Ignore it.”

His lips brushed against her earlobe as he spoke in a low voice.

Vanessa’s fingers curled instinctively for a moment, but she did not move.

The ringtone stopped.

Then it rang again.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Vanessa’s body gradually stiffened.

“Who keeps calling this late…?” she murmured softly, almost to herself. "It might be an emergency at the company.”

She spoke softly, turning her head as her gaze drifted toward the flashing phone screen on the bedside table.

Darren’s movements slowed as his arm gradually loosened around her waist, his gaze drifting toward the glowing phone screen.

The caller ID read: Adrian Knox.

At that, he went still, a faint trace of displeasure flickering in his eyes.

He knew this scene far too well.

Over the past six months, the same situation had repeated itself again and again with unsettling accuracy. Every single time he and Vanessa tried to spend meaningful time together, Adrian Knox would suddenly appear through a call, a message, or some unexpected “emergency.”

And somehow, the timing was always perfect!

Adrian Knox had only joined Vanessa’s company half a year ago as her assistant, yet Vanessa trusted him greatly. At first, Darren had convinced himself not to think too deeply about it. Work was work. Emergencies happened.

But after being interrupted again and again, even his patience had started wearing thin.

And now, on their wedding night of all nights, Adrian’s name appeared between them once more.

Vanessa bit her lower lip lightly as she stared at the screen for a moment longer, clearly torn. Then she looked back at Darren, guilt flashing briefly across her face.

“I’ll make it quick,” she said softly, gently touching his chest as if trying to reassure him.

Only after that did she answer the call, cautiously.

“Adrian? What happened?”

But the voice on the other end was unfamiliar.

“Miss Hartwell?” a woman asked urgently. “This is Ravenshade Medical Center. Mr. Adrian Knox has suffered acute abdominal bleeding and requires emergency treatment immediately. We need a family member or close contact to come as soon as possible.”

Vanessa’s face instantly turned pale.

Her grip on Darren loosened slightly as she slowly sat up.

“What…? How did this happen?”

“We believe exhaustion and alcohol worsened his condition.”

Vanessa exhaled sharply, her expression shifting into concern. Without another word, she ended the call.

For a second, she didn’t move. Then she swung her legs off the bed, driven by a sudden urgency that had overtaken her reasoning.

Her hands instinctively reached for her clothes as her mind struggled to process what she had just heard.

Darren watched her closely now, confusion slowly creeping in.

“You’re leaving?” he asked.

She hesitated for the first time, as if only now realizing what her actions looked like from the outside.

But even that hesitation didn’t last long.

“Adrian’s in the hospital,” she said, more to herself than to him, as she stood and began pulling her dress on. “I have to go.”

Darren slowly rose from the bed, still trying to catch up with how quickly the atmosphere had changed.

“Vanessa, tonight is our wedding night,” he said carefully.

That finally made her pause, and her fingers stopped at the fastening of her dress.

“I know, love. I know that.”

She turned slightly toward him now, as if she wanted to say more, but couldn’t find the right balance between the two realities pulling at her.

Then she looked away again and continued dressing anyway.

“But this is an emergency.”

“He has doctors. He has coworkers, friends, family. Why do you have to go personally?”

Vanessa exhaled, frustration and worry mixing together in her expression.

“Because he’s been pushing himself too hard for the company,” she replied quickly. “He barely rests. He even drank too much at the wedding today because he was genuinely happy for me.”

That last line landed heavily between them.

Darren gave a faint, humorless breath.

Happy for her?

The words didn’t match the picture forming in his mind anymore.

But before he could say anything else, Vanessa stepped closer again.

Her hand rose gently, hesitating for a fraction of a second before she touched his cheek softly, almost pleading.

“Please don’t overthink this. I’ll come back soon,” she said quietly.

Darren didn’t react immediately, but something in him shifted. Then he stepped back just enough for her hand to fall away.

Vanessa blinked, visibly startled by the distance he created. In three years, he had never once pulled away from her touch—not even during disagreements.

“Overthink?” he repeated quietly. “Tell me honestly, Vanessa. You can't stand to leave your employee alone for one night, but find it acceptable to abandon your husband on your wedding night?”

Vanessa's expression immediately darkened. Instead of reflecting on Darren's accusations, she looked at him with obvious disappointment. "I really didn't expect you to think this way." Her voice was filled with frustration. "Everything you're saying is based on your own assumptions. You keep imagining things that have never happened. There has never been anything improper between Adrian and me. You've already decided he's guilty without any evidence." Her tone became increasingly firm. "I honestly don't understand you anymore. You have no compassion at all. When someone is injured, all you care about is your own feelings. When someone works through illness for the sake of the company, instead of respecting his dedication, you only suspect him." "You can't even see reality anymore. He was a patient who needed someone to care for him. He was an employee who kept working despite being physically weak. Yet in your eyes, every act of kindness becomes evidence of an affair." Darren

Vanessa let out a long sigh. "You really are more understanding than most people, and more reasonable."Adrian looked up in surprise. "I don't deserve that praise.""You do." She shook her head. "Darren is simply too emotional right now. He isn't seeing things rationally, but blinded by jealousy. He has already decided what he wants to believe. I don't think he'd listen to anyone's explanation right now.""If that's the case..." Adrian said softly. "Then maybe I should talk to him myself. I never meant to come between the two of you or cause an argument. If I apologize to him face-to-face, maybe he'll understand."Vanessa immediately shook her head. "No. It won't help. Right now, Darren is too narrow-minded to listen. Whatever you say, he'll only think you're making excuses." She sighed. "We'll wait. When he calms down, I'll explain everything myself."Her words clearly revealed where her emotions currently stood. Rather than believing Darren's concerns, she instinctively chose to bel

Anita Hartwell nearly dropped the mug in her hand. "What did you just say?" On the other end of the phone, Vanessa leaned back, pressing a hand against her aching forehead. "Darren said... if things continue like this, the only path left is divorce." For several long seconds, Anita simply stared ahead, trying to process what she had just heard. "Divorce?" Her voice was filled with genuine disbelief. "Did Darren really say that?" "Yes." "No..." Anita shook her head instinctively, even though Vanessa could not see her. "That doesn't sound like him." Among everyone in the Hartwell family, Anita had never thought Darren was the ideal match for her cousin. In her opinion, he lacked a prestigious background, had no visible wealth, and lived an unusually quiet life that revealed little about his past. Even so, there was one thing she had never questioned. His love for Vanessa. It had been obvious to everyone. Even Anita, who had always been skeptical of him, had privately admitted t

The words shattered the room and Vanessa stood frozen. For several long seconds, she simply stared at him. The color drained from her face before rushing back in an angry crimson. Her lips parted, yet no words emerged. Shock, humiliation, and fury fought for dominance in her expression. “You…” She pointed at Darren with trembling fingers. How could you say something like that?” Her voice rose uncontrollably. “Have you lost your mind?” She took several hurried steps toward him, her eyes burning. “You're insane! I've done nothing to deserve being humiliated by my own husband like this!” Her chest rose and fell violently. “I've tolerated your suspicion all morning, but these words… Do you know how insulting they are?” Her eyes reddened. “They make me furious and disappointed in you.” She looked at him as though she hardly recognized the man before her. Darren remained silent until she finished speaking. His fists clenched at his sides, then slowly loosened as he fought to k

  • Chapter 5

Darren closed his eyes, his heart churning with emotions too complicated to put into words. This was not the first time Vanessa had indirectly admitted she was at fault in such a subtle way. Whenever conflict arose because of Adrian, she would never truly acknowledge the core of the problem. Instead, she would apologize vaguely, offer a small gesture of goodwill, and expect everything to return to normal. He had endured it countless times before. And he knew that as long as Adrian remained between them, this would not be the last time either. After a long moment of silence, Darren calmly reached up and removed Vanessa's hands from around his waist. Then he turned away, deliberately putting several steps between them. "Our wedding night no longer exists," his voice was cold and emotionless. The words struck Vanessa harder than any shout ever could. She stood frozen. At first, annoyance flashed across her beautiful face. She had already lowered herself enough to apologize. Yet Da

A deep, respectful voice immediately answered. "Understood, Commander. We will prepare everything." Darren ended the call, with his eyes remaining fixed on the city lights. Far away, somewhere across the city, Vanessa was undoubtedly still sitting beside Adrian's hospital bed. For the first time in three years... Darren no longer cared. He slipped the wrist device back into its protective case, locked the suitcase, and quietly walked out of the honeymoon suite. Outside the hotel, he boarded a taxi home. Meanwhile, inside the VIP ward of Lifeway Hospital, Vanessa Hartwell slowly opened her eyes and a dull ache shot through her neck. She frowned and instinctively rubbed her shoulder before realizing she had fallen asleep on the companion chair beside Adrian Knox's hospital bed. Her elegant coat, worn over parts of her wedding attire the previous night, was badly wrinkled from spending hours in the uncomfortable chair, and her neck ached. Just then, a weak groan came from the be
