Chapter 52
Vanessa watched as Adrian reached the door. His shoulders were slightly lowered, and his face carried a lonely expression. He looked like someone who had just been reminded of his place. For a moment, Vanessa said nothing. Then guilt slowly spread through her heart. She remembered Adrian's condition and how he had just been discharged from the hospital. She remembered how he had nevertheless volunteered to help the company. And now she had made him feel as though she did not trust him.“Adrian.”He stopped. But he didn't immediately turn around.“Yes?”His voice was deliberately subdued.Vanessa hesitated.“Come back.”Adrian slowly turned.A faint trace of surprise appeared on his face.“Madam?”Vanessa sighed.“I've thought about it.”He waited.“You can try.”For a fraction of a second, an intense gleam of satisfaction flashed through Adrian's eyes. But it disappeared almost instantly.Instead, he looked almost overwhelmed.“Really?”“Yes.”Vanessa nodded.“I'll let you take over t
Chapter 51
Despite trying to present himself in the best possible light, Vanessa remained uneasy. She looked at Adrian quietly, her fingers resting on the edge of the desk.“There are still some things that concern me.”Adrian immediately became attentive. “What things?”Vanessa hesitated before answering.“First, you were only discharged from the hospital recently.”Adrian's expression changed slightly. “You're worried about my health?”“Yes.”Vanessa sighed.“You've just undergone treatment. You're supposed to be resting and recovering, but you're already volunteering for one of the most demanding responsibilities in the company.”“I feel much better now.”“I know you said that.”She looked at him seriously.“But feeling better doesn't necessarily mean you're fully recovered. The work involved in quality inspection isn't something you can simply do for an hour and go home. There may be long meetings, production-site inspections, technical discussions, document reviews, and military acceptance
Chapter 50
Adrian’s attitude appeared highly proactive, and for several seconds, Vanessa simply stared at him. She had expected Adrian to complain about Darren’s disappearance or perhaps ask her to intervene. She had not expected him to volunteer for such an important responsibility. Quality inspection was not an ordinary administrative task. The upcoming military weapons acceptance conference was extremely important to the company. Any mistake in the inspection reports, technical specifications, testing records, or acceptance procedures could create serious problems during the military evaluation. Vanessa slowly leaned back in her chair. “Are you sure about this?” Adrian nodded immediately. “Yes.” Vanessa remained hesitant. Although she was the head of the company, she knew her own limitations. She was primarily a businesswoman. She understood contracts, negotiations, investments, clients, military partnerships, and corporate strategy. But the technical side of weapons producti
Chapter 49
Adrian remained seated on the sofa while Vanessa continued staring at the military correspondence on her computer. The silence between them was uncomfortable. The email had reminded Vanessa of how much Darren had quietly handled over the past three years, and even though she continued insisting that he would eventually return, his absence was becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. Adrian noticed the change in her expression. After hesitating for a moment, he cautiously asked, "Vanessa..." She looked up. "Yes?" "Is Darren's departure somehow because of me?" Vanessa's eyebrows immediately drew together. "What?" Adrian lowered his eyes. "I've been thinking about everything that happened. Maybe if I hadn't become involved in your disagreements, things wouldn't have reached this point." He sighed softly. "If he's angry because of me, perhaps I should help you find him." Vanessa immediately interrupted him. "No." Adrian looked at her. "This has nothing to do with you." "
Chapter 48
Vanessa convinced herself that there was no way Darren would truly leave her. No matter how angry he had become, no matter how coldly he had spoken, she simply couldn't believe that the man who had spent three years loving her would actually walk away from their marriage. He was hurt, jealous, and furious. But surely those emotions would eventually pass. And once they did, Darren would realize that he had made a terrible mistake. This time, however, Vanessa refused to back down. She was determined to make Darren understand just how serious his own mistakes had been. He had accused her repeatedly, treated Adrian with hostility, attacked him, and then refused to show any remorse even after Adrian had undergone major surgery. Vanessa believed Darren needed to understand that marriage could not survive if one partner constantly allowed jealousy and possessiveness to control him. "No matter what happens," she murmured, "I'm not going to apologize first." She reached for her phone. H
Chapter 47
Vanessa remained completely unaware of Adrian's pretence. She continued visiting him at the hospital, making sure he had everything he needed and personally checking with the doctors about his recovery. Whenever Adrian complained about pain, Vanessa immediately became concerned. Whenever he tried to sit up too quickly, she would stop him. Whenever he apologized for causing trouble between her and Darren, she would reassure him that he shouldn't blame himself. Adrian played his part perfectly. He remained weak and vulnerable whenever Vanessa was around, speaking slowly and occasionally wincing as though even breathing caused him pain. Vanessa never suspected that his condition was not nearly as severe as he made it appear. In her mind, Adrian was simply a badly injured employee who had narrowly escaped death. And because she believed Darren had been responsible for his injuries, her sympathy toward Adrian only grew stronger. Meanwhile, Darren remained absent. His phone had be
