Erick skipped dinner tonight. It was not like he was hungry anyway.
Michel threw a fit over the security cameras, yelling as if somebody had sabotaged his entire life.
Meanwhile, Erick helped old Mrs. Hollis with her shopping bags, fixed that broken kitchen clock, and deliberately picked the most boring book off the library shelf. Just because watching him stay calm made Michel even angrier.
Petty, perhaps. Erick no longer cared.
After the day he had endured, he figured he had earned some petty revenge.
"You're difficult to find these days," Remi said, stepping out from under the oak tree by the garden path, hands jammed in her jacket pockets like she was cold.
"Occupational hazard," Erick said with a shrug.
She fell into step beside him without another word.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Perfect gardens hid the mansion's internal chaos.
"Michel's having an aneurysm over those cameras," Remi finally said. "At this rate, he'll be screaming at the wallpaper by morning."
Erick cracked a smirk. "Acting like fuzzy security footage personally betrayed him."
"Fired two guards today."
"That's new. Normally, he waits till the third breakdown."
Remi released a familiar tired laugh.
Mrs. Hollis must've shoved the paper bag at Remi, because suddenly she was holding it out to him.
"You didn't eat."
Inside was a chocolate chip cookie with one bite missing.
Erick snapped it clean in half and handed her the untouched side.
"How chivalrous," Remi said dryly.
"I hate eating alone. Feels like I'm already divorced."
That got a real laugh out of her.
They settled onto the stone bench by the fountain.
That easy silence settled between them—the kind you only get with someone who's drowning in the same bullshit as you.
"Michel stole my software design three years back," Remi said quietly. "Sold it under his name to one of the subsidiaries."
"How much?"
"Three million." Erick scoffed softly. “Michel really undersells himself.”
She elbowed him. "You're terrible."
He shrugged. "Promoted himself after, didn't he?"
"Executive director."
"Predictable."
Remi leaned back against the bench. "Evelyn said I was being dramatic when I complained."
"Evelyn Laurent calling someone corrupt? That's hilarious."
The corner of her mouth twitched, then she went quiet again.
"Erick."
Something in her voice made him turn.
"Did Dominique really tell you about the pregnancy today?"
His jaw tightened. Even now, the word tasted bitter on his tongue.
"Said she 'handled it.' Right in front of Cartier." He shrugged. "Real classy moment."
Remi frowned. "What's that mean?"
But the fear in her eyes said she already knew.
She just didn't want it to be true.
Erick stared at the dark fountain water. "She got rid of it."
Remi threw her half of the cookie into the bushes.
"No." Her voice broke. "That's a lie."
"Her exact words."
Remi dragged her hands down her face.
"When she first told me, she actually smiled." Her throat worked. "I thought... maybe this family finally gave her something good."
Erick let out a hollow laugh, not because anything was funny, but because otherwise, he'd start punching holes in walls.
“That family destroys everything eventually.”
Remi looked sick. "A week later, she said it was gone," she whispered. "I thought she lost it naturally, and she made me swear not to tell. Especially you."
Erick looked at his hands.
His nails had left crescent marks in his palms.
"Our kid," he said quietly. "She called it a mistake."
The garden went dead silent.
Then Remi reached over and squeezed his fist. "Christ, Rick. I shouldn't even be saying this… she and Evelyn already think I'm meddling..."
"I get it, Remi. Do not ruin yourself defending me." He really meant it.
Dominique's voice sliced through the dark like a blade.
"Remi."
She stood on the porch in her silk robe, face unreadable in the golden light.
"Inside. Now."
"We were talking," Remi said.
"I can see that." Her eyes locked onto Erick like a rifle sight.
"You and my sister," Dominique said. "This family really does pass trash around."
Erick stood slowly.
For the first time in years, he didn't make himself smaller for her.
"We were discussing baby killers," he said calmly. "You should join us. Share your expertise."
"Erick, stop." Remi looked between them. “I…”
Dominique turned to her half-sister menacingly. “Should I tell you twice to get inside? You’re being too involved, like your mother did.”
Remi flinched.
Erick frowned slightly. Dominique had never spoken to her like that before.
“It was unnecessary, Dominique…”
Remi sighed. “Fine, I will go inside.” She gave him a concerned look before heading inside.
She stepped closer, nose-to-nose. "I want a divorce. End this joke."
"A divorce?" Erick repeated.
"Yes," she sneered triumphantly. "Ready to lose everything? Go back to fixing AC units?"
Erick stared at her silently. Five years suddenly felt very expensive.
"Or hoping Remi will hire you?" Dominique whispered venomously. "She's just the mistress's daughter. A charity case."
She turned to leave.
Erick stepped into her path. "You used to hate your father's crimes," he hissed in her ear. "Now you love his stolen power. Let Martin Clarke touch you just to climb higher."
Dominique gasped, trying to pull away.
"You’re worse than Leroy," Erick growled. "At least he owns being a monster."
She yanked free, face flushed with panic. "You have no right…"
"I have every right," Erick interrupted, stepping closer. "You killed my child."
Dominique looked away. Without another word, she scrambled inside and slammed the door.
Erick stood in the shadows, staring at the door. He pulled out the burner phone. He flipped it open and dialed a long-dead number.
Aria answered instantly. "Quade?"
“Inform the board,” Erick said quietly. “I think it is time I paid everyone a visit.”
Aria gasped. "Five years in the dark. You're sure?"
Erick looked toward the estate. “Tell them Quade’s back.”

Chapter 15 — The Dead Man Protocol
For the first time all night, Erick looked genuinely furious. The difference terrified Remi more."You should not have said that name," Erick said quietly. The squad leader laughed once. "You think you still matter enough to make threats?"Erick slowly stepped in front of Remi protectively. The movement was small, but Remi noticed it instantly."So this is the part where you kill us?" she asked tightly."No," the squad leader replied."That would waste ten years of investment."Remi frowned. Investment? The man lowered his rifle slightly. "We are taking Chairman Quade alive."Erick's expression hardened. "Clarke finally got desperate enough to send Blackwater contractors after me?""Former Blackwater," the man corrected smugly."That somehow sounds worse," Remi muttered. The squad began descending the muddy slope carefully.Erick glanced once toward the river beside them. The water was moving way too fast, sharp rocks everywhere, and the chances of making it? Basically zero.Remi saw
Chapter 14 — Blackwater Road
The Aston Martin was hit hard. Remi cried out when her shoulder hit the door. The car slid on the wet pavement, the seatbelt securing her. Behind them, the black SUV accelerated again, headlights cutting through the storm like predator eyes. "Erick..." "Brace." The SUV rammed them a second time. Metal screamed. The Aston spun halfway across the road before Erick yanked the wheel back, tires screeching. Rain hammered the windshield so hard the world outside looked underwater. Remi gripped the dashboard. "Who the hell are they?!" Erick glanced at the mirror. "Not Laurent's security." That made it worse. The SUV surged forward again. This time, Remi saw the passenger window roll down. A rifle barrel poked through the rain. "Erick!" Gunfire erupted. The rear windshield shattered inward. Glass sprayed across the seats. The driver near the guardrail dropped into the mud, screaming. Erick shoved Remi down as bullets tore through the trunk. "Stay low." His voice was ice-cold. Lik
Chapter 13 — Predators Don’t Flinch
"Total electrical failure," the driver shouted over the storm, flashlight beam trembling across the steaming engine. Remi shoved her aside without hesitation, plunging her hands into the mess of wires. Her manicured nails tore through connections with practiced precision. Thirty seconds was all it took to confirm her worst fear - this wasn't an accident. The car had been remotely bricked via military-grade encryption. "Inside. Now," Remi snapped. The driver scurried to call for help, but they both knew no one would come in this storm. The car door slammed shut, sealing them in a dripping cave of tension thicker than the rain outside. Erick sat rigid beside her, rainwater tracing the sharp angles of his face. His knuckles whitened around the steering wheel. "Who are you?" Remi's voice cut through the dark, lower now. Dangerous. Erick wiped rain from his brow with deliberate calm. "You know who I am." Remi laughed - a sharp, broken sound. She grabbed his tie, twisting the silk ti

CHAPTER 11 — Old Ghosts
Only the beeping monitors and rain sounds broke the silence in Manhattan General Hospital's private wing.Water dripped from Erick's hair as he walked down the corridor in his wet black suit. The nurses at the reception desk glanced at him but said nothing. He didn't look important. That was the point.Leroy and Evelyn waited outside Victor's room with two bodyguards. "What are you doing here?" Evelyn snapped.Erick ignored her and reached for the door.Leroy stepped forward, trying to sound reasonable. "Victor's condition is unstable. Maybe we should postpone this—""I'm not here to talk," Erick said.He opened the door and went inside. The bodyguards didn't try to stop him.The room smelled of disinfectant. Victor Hale lay limp in the hospital bed, tubes attached to his chest. Her sharp eyes remained fixed on Erick, suspicion growing."Who," she asked slowly, her icy voice cutting through the ballroom, "is Quade?"Senior executives near the back stiffened.Leroy stepped forward, forcing a calm smile. "Ma'am," he said softly, "he's not here. Victor's been under pressure lately—the markets, the board, company affairs...clearly, it's been too much."Claire sharply waved him away. "Then answer it."
