Chapter 69. The Heart Below

The world split open beneath their feet. Kai felt the ground vanish, his body plummeting into a pit of green light.

Roots whipped past him like snakes, hissing as they struck the air. His sword glowed gold in the darkness, the only light fighting the storm of green.

Beside him, the soldier shouted, clutching the shard of the second key tight against his chest. The glow burned his gloves, smoke rising from his skin. Still, he didn’t let go.

The fall seemed endless. The wind roared in their ears. The smell of soil and ash grew thicker, choking Kai’s throat, then, impact.

They slammed into wet ground, the force rattling Kai’s bones. He rolled, coughing, vision blurred. Roots shifted beneath him, alive, pulsing like veins.

The soldier landed hard, groaning, but still held the shard. “Damn it,” he muttered. “I’m too old for this.”

Kai staggered to his feet, sword raised, chest heaving. Above them, the hole sealed shut.
