Bright lay crumpled on the floor, gasping for air, blood trickling from his mouth.

"Mr. Cooper!" he rasped, reaching out like a drowning man. "Please... save me. I’m Bright Thornfell! I swear, if you help me, I’ll pay you double—triple—what Gravesend promised. Name your price!"

Cooper paused by the door, the still-smoking gun in his hand lowering slightly as he heard the plea.

His eyes narrowed.

Thornfell money? Influence?

A slow, greedy smile crept across his face. "Release Mr. Thornfell right now, and I’ll consider sparing your life," he announced, stepping forward confidently. Then, under his breath, he muttered, If I return the Thornfell heir alive, they’ll owe me everything. I’ll be more powerful than ever, even rewarded more than the Gravesends.

He smirked at Jaden, already envisioning the riches.

But Jaden only tilted his head slightly.

Then he scoffed.

A heartbeat later—

CRACK!

Without warning, Jaden drove his foot into Bright’s spine with brutal force. The sound of bones shat

The other villagers whispered among themselves, their voices hushed but filled with curiosity and awe. None of them had ever seen such a formidable display of soldiers marching through their small riverside village. Children clung to their mothers, and the older folk squinted into the night, shaking their heads in disbelief.Asher Storm, still reeling from the chaos, ushered Jaden Rift back toward their modest house. He didn’t dare pry about the armored men trailing behind, though his eyes darted to them more than once.Sensing his hesitation, Jaden Rift offered a gentle smile. “Mom, Dad, you don’t have to worry. This is Kaelus, and the rest… they were Axel’s brothers-in-arms.”At that, Asher’s face lit up, though his eyes glistened faintly. “Ah… Axel’s comrades! Welcome, welcome. My boy was truly blessed to fight alongside men like you.”Kaelus and his men bowed their heads slightly, their hardened expressions softening. The mention of Axel stirred a deep ache in their hearts. Though

“What? You mean… go mining with the rest of them?”Bobby Storm’s face went pale as he stumbled out of the van, clutching his chest and glancing around desperately. Behind him, Baron and the rest of the gangsters followed, cursing under their breath, their bravado completely gone. The Crimson Unit soldiers wasted no time. With firm grips and unyielding force, they marched Bobby, Baron, and the rest toward the waiting army vehicles. The destination: the harsh, unforgiving mines in the Northern District. In stark contrast, Jet Zangi’s remaining men, who had once swaggered like kings of the underground, let out audible sighs of relief. Ten years of forced labor in the mines was far better than being killed outright. Jaden Rift had been merciful—spared their lives despite their arrogance and crimes. One of the “security guards,” still trembling, sneered at Baron’s gang. “Why are you all crying now? Hurry up and get moving. Don’t think you’re special—we’ve got work to do.”With that, the Cr

Baron came tearing down the dirt road with about twenty of his men crammed into vans, Bobby Storm riding shotgun with a swollen face and eyes burning with spite. They had rushed over as soon as Bobby had told him Jaden Rift was by the river, convinced this would be the perfect time to make him pay.But before they could even roll up close, the driver’s instincts kicked in. His foot slammed on the brakes, the van screeching to a halt, tires grinding against gravel. Everyone inside lurched forward.“What the hell are you doing?!” Baron barked, slamming a fist on the dashboard. “Why’d you stop? Keep driving!”The driver’s face was pale, his voice trembling. “B-Big Brother Baron… something’s wrong up there…”Baron shoved his way forward and leaned over the driver’s shoulder, glaring out the windshield. “What’s wrong? Spit it out!”The man pointed with a shaking hand. “Look… soldiers. A whole damn army. They’re rounding people up.”For the first time, Baron’s swagger faltered. He squinted

His three hundred men stood stiff by the riverbank, trembling so hard some could barely hold their balance. The sharp stink of urine crept into the air, sour and humiliating. A few of them had pissed themselves without even realizing it—fear had stripped them of every ounce of pride. Jet Zangi’s corpse still lay in the dirt, his head twisted at an unnatural angle, his blood staining the earth. That sight alone had broken them. Jaden Rift turned his gaze on the pathetic crowd, his expression unreadable, his voice sharp and unyielding. “Round them up. Every last one. They’re guilty of leaking military secrets and masquerading as soldiers. Sentence them to the mines—ten years. Let them sweat for the country they tried to betray.” The order cut through the air, final and absolute. The Crimson Unit soldiers moved without hesitation, rifles raised as they drove Jet Zangi’s men into tight groups. Shackles clinked, curses turned to whimpers, and one by one, the mercenaries were forced

He stared at Jaden Rift in shock and despair, his mind blanking as bitterness crept into his mouth like poison. His lips twitched, but no words came. Regret crushed down on him with such force that he almost wished he could slit his own throat right there and end the humiliation. How? How was this possible?According to the Ortega family’s records, Jaden Rift was nothing more than a retired soldier—discarded from the battlefield, stripped of his glory, nothing to fear. Yet here he stood, commanding an army that could level cities.Jet Zangi’s gut twisted. He realized too late that he’d been deceived. What he didn’t know was that Jaden Rift’s records were locked under the nation’s highest clearance, redacted and buried in layers of secrecy. Only a handful of people in the entire country had ever seen the truth. Even Morix Sable’s background as part of the National Guard under Jaden Rift was hidden in confidential archives. The Ortega family thought they’d been clever. But the files the

Thud! Thud! The ground seemed to quake as several heavy engines roared to life. Blinding beams exploded outward.Floodlights snapped on. The pitch-black night vanished in an instant, drowned in a merciless white glare that cut through the storm clouds. The riverbank was suddenly brighter than noon, every soldier, every weapon, every armored vehicle revealed in brutal detail. The glow stretched far, swallowing the shadows.
