Two years ago, Hannah and her father were driving back from a failed business meeting. The deal had collapsed last minute. Their so-called partner turned out to be a fraud—and a dangerous one. On the way back, they noticed a black SUV following them. At first, they ignored it. Then another one joined.

The driver tried to shake them off. It didn’t work.

They were soon cornered on a narrow road outside the city.

Hannah and her father jumped out, hoping to run, but the two vehicles didn’t stop. They accelerated, heading straight at them.

In that moment, Hannah froze. She thought it was over. She was sure of it.

But before the cars could reach them, someone dropped out of the sky. Literally.

A man landed between them and the cars and stopped both vehicles with his bare hands. The ground cracked beneath him, the hoods of the cars crumpled, and everything went still.

Hannah remembered standing there, speechless, heart racing.

He looked like something out of a movie.

She tried to speak, but he didn’t give her the chance. He disappeared just as fast as he arrived.

Since that day, she never stopped thinking about him.

Every man she met after that, she compared to him. None of them came close.

Not even Derek.

---

“Hannah?” someone called.

She didn’t respond. Her eyes were fixed on the man standing across the room. He looked different now. Taller. Older. But it was him. She knew it.

Without thinking, she ran.

Derek, watching from a few feet away, smiled to himself. One of his men leaned over and tapped his shoulder.

“Hannah?” one of the guests blinked. “Isn’t that—?”

One of Derek’s men gently tapped him on the shoulder. “Sir, it’s your fiancée. Looks like she’s coming this way.”

Derek turned, and his face lit up with a dopey grin. “She’s running to me?” he muttered under his breath. “All this time, I’ve been chasing her… and now she’s finally falling for me.”

He smoothed his hair, adjusted his tie, and spread his arms wide with anticipation.

“Hannah! You look stunning! Come here, sweetheart!” he said with his eyes closed, grinning.

But then—

She passed right by him.

Derek’s smile froze.

The crowd gasped.

And then she threw her arms around Jaden.

“You’re that man…” she whispered. “The one from two years ago. I’ve never forgotten you.”

Jaden stood stiffly, arms at his sides, caught completely off-guard.

Even with all his strength and discipline, he wasn’t prepared for this.

Derek turned around slowly, disbelief painted on his face. “What…?”

Whispers swirled through the room.

“What the hell is wrong with Miss Winston doing? She's cheating on Mr. Thornfell in front of him?”

“Is she out of her mind?”

“Anyone but this arrogant stranger?”

“I see, so that's why this stranger came to the party in the first place.”

“She's not only embarrassing herself but her entire family. Pathetic!”

Everyone was criticising her, as Derek stood in shock and embarrassment.

Back when they were kids in Ravenmoor.

He was the quiet boy in torn shoes, too poor to fit in. She was the girl from a powerful family who ignored the whispers and sat beside him anyway.

When the others mocked him, she stood up for him.

She made space for him in a world that didn’t want him there.

Hannah Winston had been his only friend.

If it wasn't for her Jaden wasn't sure he would have survived that school with his sister.

He'd carried that kindness in his heart, and he never forgot.

So when he saw her again that night—scared, cornered, helpless—he didn’t hesitate.

But he hadn’t meant for her to recognize him. He had kept his face in the shadows, just another stranger passing through. That was safer—for both of them.

“I’m Hannah Winston,” she said softly, stepping back to get a better look at him. “But you can just call me Hannah.”

She smiled, eyes warm with recognition and something else—something deeper.

“Can I know your name?”

Jaden paused. A heartbeat passed.

Then he gave her the name he always used when he wanted to stay hidden.

“My name is… Lee Rift.”

“Lee Rift,” she repeated, tilting her head. “That’s funny. I used to have a close friend with that last name.”

She let out a small laugh, then looked down, her smile fading. “I haven’t seen him in over ten years. I wonder where he is now…”

Jaden’s chest tightened.

She didn’t know. Not yet.

But she still remembered him.

“That friend of yours,” he said quietly. “You’ll see him again. When the time is right.”

Selena stood rooted to the spot, her gaze sweeping over the line of men in expensive suits, each waiting to sign their names and pour money into her project. The surrealism of the moment hit her hard. She almost questioned if she’d finally lost it and drifted into some too-perfect dream. On the other side of the room, Elias’s composure was hanging by a thread. His jaw clenched so tightly it looked like it might crack, and a vein throbbed visibly at his temple. He wasn’t just angry—he was seconds away from an aneurysm.Selena took a slow, measured breath, willing her heartbeat to steady. When she finally moved, it was with deliberate confidence, heels clicking against the polished floor as she approached the table to oversee the contracts. Her fingers skimmed over each page, her signature neat and firm, sealing the deals one after another.By the time the last pen was set down, she had secured seven hundred million. Just like that, Rift Corporation’s looming financial disaster had evap

  • Chapter 289

As soon as they stepped into the office, several well-dressed men in suits moved quickly toward them, each wearing expressions of respect and urgency.“Mr. Rift. Ms. Verrick.” Their greetings came in unison, voices carrying the weight of people used to being greeted, not the other way around.Selena froze for half a second, her mind blank. She wasn’t used to men of this caliber addressing her with such deference. Almost instinctively, she nodded, murmuring polite responses she didn’t even register.Jaden, however, remained composed, his expression cool, almost bored. He didn’t rush to respond, only offering the faintest nod and a low hum of acknowledgment, as if their respect was nothing out of the ordinary. If his indifference bothered them, they didn’t show it. In fact, they leaned in closer, almost vying for his attention. Their smiles were practiced, but their eagerness was obvious. From the corner, Elias and his family stood frozen, their eyes darting between the men and Jaden. T

  • Chapter 288

Selena’s gaze stayed fixed on the crumpled contract lying at her feet. Her teeth worried at her bottom lip, a nervous habit she hated but couldn’t stop. The room felt smaller, the air heavier, as if the walls themselves were closing in on her indecision. If she refused to sign, the Greyfield project would grind to a halt. No money meant Rift Corporation would bleed out until it collapsed, and everything she’d built would be scattered to the wind.If she signed, the Verrick family’s claws would sink in deep. They’d strip the profits bare, fatten themselves off her labor, and leave her with scraps — a glorified servant to their greed. She didn’t notice Jaden watching her until his voice cut through the tension, low and mocking."Heh. Just like I said. You people really are a pack of dogs. The moment one is weak, the rest start tearing into it. Don’t agree to their terms, dear."Her head turned sharply toward him, eyes searching his face for an answer he wasn’t supposed to give so easily

  • Chapter 287

Elizabeth’s voice cut in, her tone dripping with condescension. “Exactly! We’re trying to help you, and you’re acting like we’re the enemy. Don’t be so ungrateful.”Selena’s lips parted, but no words came out. Their smug faces and self-assured tone left her momentarily speechless. The worst part? They weren’t entirely wrong. Her knuckles tightened around the edge of her desk. Deep down, she couldn’t deny the brutal truth — the Rift Corporation’s finances were in a chokehold. This project was bleeding them dry, and every day without an investor was another nail in the coffin. And it wasn’t just any project. This was one of the city’s most high-profile development ventures. If it stalled, or worse, collapsed, the fallout would be catastrophic. Contracts would be broken. Penalties would crush them. Their reputation would take a blow they couldn’t recover from. But even knowing all of that, Selena’s pulse spiked with defiance. The Verrick terms were absurd — not an offer, but an execution

  • Chapter 386

Pulling out a chair with deliberate weight, Elias lowered himself into it like he owned the place. The scrape of the legs against the marble floor cut through the quiet room. Behind him, Talon, Elisabeth, and two broad-shouldered bodyguards stood in rigid formation, hands clasped neatly behind their backs, their presence more threat than formality.A slow, knowing smile curved Elias’s lips, his gaze never leaving Selena."Why else would I be here," he said, voice dripping with casual arrogance, "if not to talk business with you? From what I hear, Rift Corporation is running on fumes. Desperate for investors, aren’t you?"Selena’s brows drew together. She didn’t like the way he said it — like her struggles were an open secret for him to toy with."You’re really here to invest in our company?" she asked, her tone flat but edged with doubt.Elias chuckled, the sound low and rich, leaning back like he was settling in for a game. "Of course. Why else would I come knocking?"Her eyes narrow

  • Chapter 285

The shrill ring of the office landline broke the stillness. Selena glanced at it briefly, then picked up. “Hello?”The crisp, professional voice of the front desk receptionist came through the line. “President Verrick, there’s an Elias here asking to see you.”Her brows knitted instantly. Elias? The name pulled at an old thread she didn’t want to touch. Then it hit—her uncle. What the hell was he doing here?A flash of surprise crossed her features before hardening into ice. Memories she’d buried clawed their way back up—her family’s exile from the Verrick name, the public severing of ties, the cold stares from relatives who had once called her their own, the public humiliation. Her tone dropped several degrees. “I don’t want to see him.”She was about to hang up when the receptionist’s urgent voice stopped her. “He… asked me to tell you he’s here to invest in the company. He wants to know if you’re interested now.”Selena froze. Invest?A storm churned behind her eyes. From a persona
