The Dungeon That Shouldn't Exist

The first creature stepped into the light.

Ethan didn't attack.

He watched.

Four legs.

Long body.

Pale skin.

Its head was covered by a bone-like mask.

A second creature appeared behind it.

Then a third.

Ethan slowly counted.

Seven.

Eight.

Ten.

More shapes moved in the darkness.

He opened his status.

[TARGET INFORMATION UNAVAILABLE.]

Ethan frowned.

Again.

Nothing.

He tried the identification function he'd used thousands of times in the old game.

Still nothing.

"Great."

One of the creatures lowered itself.

It was preparing to attack.

Ethan tightened his grip on the short sword he'd bought from a street merchant.

It wasn't a great weapon.

The blade was cheap.

The balance was poor.

But it was better than the metal pipe.

The creature lunged.

Ethan moved.

Its claws passed his chest.

He swung.

CLANG!

The blade struck the bone mask.

The creature staggered.

Ethan stepped back.

The other creatures didn't attack.

They watched.

Ethan noticed.

"They're waiting."

The first creature recovered.

It charged again.

This time Ethan didn't dodge immediately.

He waited until the last possible moment.

Then moved.

The creature passed him.

Ethan stabbed its exposed side.

THUD.

The creature collapsed.

Silence.

Ethan waited for the system notification.

Nothing.

No experience.

No reward.

No monster defeated message.

He stared at the body.

"You're kidding."

The creature's corpse began disappearing.

Instead of turning into particles like normal monsters, it dissolved into black smoke.

The smoke gathered above the floor.

A symbol appeared.

The Tower.

Ethan's expression hardened.

"So that's how it is."

He stepped backward.

The other creatures began moving.

All at once.

Ethan ran.

He sprinted through the corridor.

The creatures followed.

Their footsteps echoed behind him.

Too many.

He couldn't fight them all.

Not at his level.

He turned a corner.

Dead end.

Ethan stopped.

The creatures slowly surrounded him.

He looked around.

No exits.

No doors.

Nothing.

Then he noticed the wall.

A faint crack.

Ethan remembered the old game.

Hidden passages were often marked by environmental inconsistencies.

He struck the wall.

Nothing.

Again.

Nothing.

The creatures were getting closer.

Ethan hit it a third time.

CRACK.

The wall opened.

Ethan immediately jumped through.

The passage closed behind him.

Silence.

He leaned against the wall.

His breathing was heavy.

"That was close."

A blue message appeared.

[ENVIRONMENTAL PUZZLE SOLVED.]

Ethan stared.

Then another.

[EXPERIENCE +20]

He smiled.

"So that's what you want."

The dungeon wasn't testing his strength.

It was testing his knowledge.

His experience.

His ability to understand the world.

That was something he still had.

The corridor opened into a large chamber.

A stone platform stood in the center.

On top of it was a sword.

Ethan immediately recognized the design.

A beginner's weapon.

Nothing special.

But the system said otherwise.

[UNKNOWN WEAPON DETECTED.]

Ethan approached carefully.

He picked it up.

The moment his hand touched the hilt—

BOOM!

The entire chamber shook.

A red message appeared.

[WARNING.]

[LEGACY WEAPON DETECTED.]

Ethan froze.

"Legacy?"

The sword began glowing.

Images flashed through his mind.

A battlefield.

Thousands of players.

A ruined city.

The Tower.

And himself—

standing at the top.

Holding this same sword.

Ethan dropped it.

The vision disappeared.

He stared at the weapon.

"I've seen you before."

The sword remained silent.

Then the system displayed:

[WEAPON MEMORY LOCKED.]

Ethan didn't pick it up again.

Not yet.

He had too many unanswered questions.

He continued deeper.

The dungeon became stranger with every room.

There were no normal monsters.

No treasure chests.

No conventional traps.

Everything seemed designed around his knowledge.

One room contained a puzzle from Floor 37.

Another used a trap he'd only seen on Floor 82.

A third contained symbols from the final hundred floors.

Ethan stopped.

"This isn't a beginner dungeon."

He looked around.

"It's a memory test."

The dungeon was recreating parts of the Tower.

But why?

Who had built it?

And why him?

A door opened at the end of the chamber.

Ethan stepped through.

A man was sitting on a stone throne.

Ethan stopped.

The man looked ordinary.

Black hair.

Dark clothes.

Calm eyes.

He looked around Ethan's age.

"You took your time."

Ethan raised his sword.

"Who are you?"

The man smiled.

"That's the wrong question."

"Then what's the right one?"

"Why are you here?"

Ethan frowned.

"I entered a dungeon."

"No."

The man's smile disappeared.

"You were brought here."

Ethan tightened his grip.

"By whom?"

The man stood.

"By the same person who brought the Tower into your world."

"Who?"

The man looked directly at him.

"You."

Ethan went completely still.

"What?"

"You started this."

Ethan shook his head.

"That's impossible."

"Is it?"

The man's eyes glowed faintly.

"You played the game for fifteen years."

"Yes."

"You reached the 1000th floor."

"Yes."

"You clicked Yes when the system asked whether you wanted to play another game."

Ethan's expression changed.

"How do you know that?"

The man smiled.

"Because I was there."

Ethan's heart began pounding.

"Who are you?"

The man didn't answer.

Instead, he raised one hand.

The dungeon disappeared.

Ethan found himself standing in darkness.

A single blue screen appeared.

[FINAL MEMORY LOCKED.]

Then another.

[UNLOCK REQUIREMENT: LEVEL 20.]

Ethan stared.

The man was gone.

The dungeon returned.

Ethan stood alone.

A notification appeared.

[DUNGEON OBJECTIVE UPDATED.]

Reach the end.

Survive.

Remember.

Ethan took a slow breath.

"Fine."

He raised his sword.

"If that's what you want..."

He stepped forward.

"...I'll remember everything."

The final chamber was waiting.

A massive creature stood in the center.

It looked like a wolf, but its body was covered in black armor.

Two enormous horns curved from its skull.

The system finally identified it.

[DUNGEON GUARDIAN]

[LEVEL: 25]

[RANK: D]

Ethan stared.

Level 25.

He was Level 11.

The difference was enormous.

The guardian roared.

The entire chamber shook.

Ethan's hands trembled.

He was outmatched.

Completely.

He could run.

Maybe there was another exit.

But the dungeon doors closed.

The guardian charged.

Ethan rolled.

Its claws tore through the stone where he'd been standing.

He struck its leg.

The blade bounced off.

CLANG!

"Too hard."

The guardian turned.

Ethan barely escaped another attack.

He looked at the creature carefully.

Not the body.

The movement.

The pattern.

Every monster had one.

Even bosses.

The guardian attacked again.

Ethan dodged.

Then again.

He waited.

Five attacks.

Pause.

Five attacks.

Pause.

There.

A weakness.

Ethan ran toward the creature instead of away from it.

The guardian opened its jaws.

Ethan slid beneath its body.

He drove the sword upward.

THUD!

The blade pierced the gap between its armor plates.

The guardian roared.

Ethan pulled the sword free and ran.

Blood poured from the wound.

The guardian turned.

It was angry now.

Ethan smiled.

"Got you."

The battle continued.

Ten minutes.

Twenty.

Thirty.

Ethan was exhausted.

His arms were shaking.

His body was covered in cuts.

But he kept moving.

He didn't overpower the guardian.

He didn't suddenly awaken a legendary skill.

He simply learned it.

One attack at a time.

One mistake at a time.

Finally—

the guardian collapsed.

[DUNGEON GUARDIAN DEFEATED.]

[EXPERIENCE +500]

[LEVEL UP!]

[LEVEL 11 → 14]

Ethan fell to his knees.

He laughed quietly.

"Three levels..."

He looked at the dead guardian.

"...for that?"

Then the dungeon shook.

A new message appeared.

[SOLO CONDITION COMPLETE.]

[HIDDEN POTENTIAL ANALYSIS: 7% → 10%]

Ethan's eyes widened.

The dungeon wasn't finished.

A final door appeared.

He slowly stood.

The door opened by itself.

Beyond it was a staircase.

At the top was a familiar number.

1000.

Ethan stared at it.

His breathing stopped.

The Tower had shown him Floor 1000.

Not the beginning.

The end.

And beneath the number was a single sentence.

[YOU HAVE ALREADY BEEN HERE.]

Ethan took one step toward the staircase.

Then another.

And somewhere above him—

someone whispered:

"Welcome back, Ethan."
