Mike first helped Emily to her feet, then gently took Amanda by the arms, though with the urgency of someone who knew every second could be their last, trapped in the uncertainty of not knowing who would survive and who would not. Matías was still crying against Mike’s wife’s chest, feeling completely safe in the warmth of her embrace, not knowing where his mother was at that very moment when he needed her most. Mike held him firmly, helping him to stand.

“Quickly, we have to get out of here. The base is no longer safe—for us, or for anyone,” he said tensely, his gaze scanning every corner of the improvised refuge, fully aware that at any instant something could shatter what little peace remained.

He wasn’t wrong.

A sharp, metallic screech echoed just behind them. A distorted shadow slipped through the makeshift opening of their hideout. Out of the gloom emerged one of those creatures, its single eye glowing like a blade’s crack of light—blood-red. Its body twisted unnaturally, as if

The door closed behind them, and soon the sound of small footsteps running through the hallway filled the house. Matías quickly grabbed his father’s and Amanda’s hands, pulling them toward the backyard. The fresh morning air wrapped around them, accompanied by the chirping of birds that had built their nest under the eaves of the house.“Here, Dad!” the boy shouted, pointing at an old ball he had found in a corner. When exactly had the child gone to explore the house and stumbled upon that toy on his way?Mike smiled. He couldn’t remember the last time he had played soccer peacefully with his son without constantly having to look over his shoulder, just like he had hours earlier, while playing with Emily before all the previous chaos. He picked up the ball, tossed it into the air, and with an exaggerated gesture of a “professional goalkeeper,” threw it back to Matías.“Catch it, champ!”Amanda clapped softly, laughing as she watched the boy stumble after the ball. The scene felt heali

  • 25 — Dark Truths Revealed in Dreams

Mike finally closed his eyes, though he knew the worst of the night had yet to come. Fatigue slowly consumed him, and soon he sank into a restless sleep, trapped between darkness and memories. The pilot believed he would sleep peacefully this time, as he was once again lying in bed with the love of his life after so long apart. And because of the circumstances, he had nearly lost her forever. The nightmare caught him by surprise. At first, everything was echoes of fire and shadows. Hilary stood before him, panting, her hair stuck to her forehead with sweat. She was struggling against someone. Mike tried to shout, to run toward her, but his legs were pinned to the ground, as if the world had turned into a thick swamp beneath him. Then he saw her. Hilary, fighting not just against an alien. A human figure emerged from the shadows, a knife gleaming faintly in the dim light. Hilary tried to push him away, her hands desperate, clawing, resisting. She clearly didn’t want to die.The alien h

The ship rose into the sky with a metallic roar, shaking everyone in their seats. Mike gripped the controls tightly while Stanford, at his side, scanned the indicators on the panel.“We need a destination, and fast,” Stanford muttered, his eyes locked on the glowing touchscreens before him. “We can’t wander around in the air, not with them chasing us and looking for any desperate way to catch us—and who knows what they’d do if they succeed.”Mike nodded, his gaze fixed on the dark horizon. From the back seat, Amanda leaned forward, pointing at the GPS monitor, since her passenger seat wasn’t too far from the pilots.“Look, there… a deserted island, not far from the city coast. If we get there, we could hide. I don’t think they’d catch us there, or well… considering how smart they seem to be…”“Or here,” Emily interrupted, enlarging another signal she had just managed to detect on the map before a final decision was made. “A small village. There’s an abandoned house marked in the satel

  • 23 — Hilary’s Last Goodbye

Mike ran through the dark corridors of the base, his ragged breathing mixing with the echo of alarms that still thundered like funeral bells that refused to die out. Every step carried him further from his family and closer to the uncertainty of a fate he did not want to face. The air was thick with smoke, blood, and ashes, as if the very place were dying along with the survivors trapped inside.Hilary.The name echoed in his mind like an anchor, a weight impossible to ignore. He couldn’t fail Matías. He couldn’t fail himself. After all, she was the mother of his son, and his son had only grown up with his parents. Obviously, Matías didn’t want his family—or at least the part he knew—to fall apart. He reached the section of cubicles, where the base’s inhabitants had improvised small living quarters to make room for the masses that had flooded in ever since the alien invasion forced evacuations. Hilary’s metal door was ajar, a faint, flickering light leaking out from within, pulsing li

  • 21— The Hour of Defeat

The silence in the office grew heavier, so dense it felt like pressure on the chest. Reynolds clenched his jaw and was about to reply—he had to insist, he needed to—Mike and Hilary’s information was too important, a matter of life and death, vital for humanity’s survival. But at that moment, the lights in the air base began to flicker. At first, it was just a weak blink, like a power failure. Then, a few seconds of complete darkness.Hilary straightened in her chair, alarmed.“What the hell…?”The flickering continued, growing stronger, until the lamps overhead began to hum with a sharp, grating sound. Outside, in the hallway, came shouts and hurried footsteps.Mike felt it before anyone could explain it: a deep shiver crawled down his spine, like an internal roar. His vision blurred for an instant, and then, in his mind, came flashes: shadows falling from the sky, colossal structures tearing through the clouds, and a metallic rumble blending with the ancient voice he had heard on the
