Chapter 1: A Heart of Heavy Metal

Vaelric Duskbane wiped a smear of black, radioactive grease across his forehead, his breath hitching in his chest. His knees were jelly, and the heavy iron door of the pre-Collapse vault groaned in protest as he wedged his pry-bar into the seam.

"Come on, you piece of junk," Vaelric hissed, his muscles trembling. "Just pop open. I promise I won’t take the silverware. I just need some meds."

A hollow metallic clack echoed through the basement. The vault door shuddered, sliding back just enough for him to jam his fingers in and heave. With a screech of tortured steel, it gave way.

"Finally," he wheezed, leaning his forehead against the freezing frame. "If this ends up being another box of expired canned beets, I’m retiring from scavenging. Seriously, I’m moving to a farm. Or a hole in the ground."

Inside, the air was unnervingly stale. Sitting on a pedestal of fused glass was a sphere, the size of a grapefruit, swirling with a milky, iridescent light. It didn't look like medical supplies, but it did look expensive.

"What is that?" Vaelric muttered, reaching out. "Is that a lamp? A very fancy, glowing... marble?"

His hand brushed the surface. The orb pulsed, warmth radiating through his fingertips. He felt a sudden, sharp pang in his stomach—the hunger that had been gnawing at him for days spiked into a blinding cramp.

"My stomach is literally eating itself," he grunted, wincing. He picked up the orb, observing it. "Wait. Is this, like, a nutritional supplement? Those old-world tech-bros loved putting weird stuff in pills. Maybe it's a super-vitamin. An emergency ration?"

He looked at the sphere. It hummed a low, musical frequency that vibrated in his teeth.

"One way to find out," he muttered, closing his eyes and pressing the orb to his lips. To his shock, the hard shell dissolved like spun sugar, liquid light cascading down his throat.

"Oh, wow. That tastes like... copper and lightning? Weirdest smoothie ever."

He wiped his mouth, waiting for the heartburn. Instead, he felt a molten sensation blooming behind his ribs.

"Uh oh," Vaelric said, his voice pitching up an octave. "That’s not a vitamin. That’s a firecracker."

His chest erupted in a blinding white glow. He gasped, dropping to his knees as his heart began to thud with the force of a tectonic plate shifting. Thump-thump. It sounded like a drum played by a giant.

"Help?" Vaelric choked out, clutching his shirt. "My chest. It’s glowing. Why is my chest glowing? I’m turning into a flashlight!"

A low, guttural snarl vibrated through the basement floor, cutting through his panic.

Vaelric spun around, his skin visibly rippling with golden veins. "Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me. Now? You’re showing up now?"

From the shadows, three hounds emerged. They weren't dogs anymore—not really. Their skin hung in necrotic tatters, revealing extra, twitching limbs, and their teeth were far too long for their elongated, fleshless jaws.

"Hey, ugly!" Vaelric shouted, standing up despite the fact that his legs felt like they were made of electrified jelly. "You’re late for the party! I’ve got a bad case of divine indigestion, and I’m not in the mood for a dog show!"

The leader of the pack lunged, a blur of matted fur and clicking bone.

"Whoa! Okay, okay!" Vaelric threw his hands up instinctively.

Instead of Vaelric’s weak, scavenger punch, a shockwave of pure, white kinetic energy blasted from his palms. The air cracked like a whip. The lead hound didn’t just get hit; it evaporated into a fine mist of gray ash before it even touched him.

"Holy—! Did I just—?" Vaelric stared at his hands, his eyes wide. "Did I just vaporize a mutant? My bad, doggy! I didn't know I was packing heat!"

The remaining two hounds skittered back, whimpering.

"Yeah, that’s right!" Vaelric yelled, adrenaline overriding the agonizing heat in his chest. "Run away! I’m a walking radioactive disaster now! I’m like a glittery bomb!"

The hounds didn't run, though. They circled, their hunger outweighing their fear. One dove for his ankle.

"Stop biting me!" Vaelric swung his hand again, but his control was non-existent. A blast of energy hit the floor instead of the beast.

The concrete groaned. Cracks spider-webbed outward, glowing with an intense, celestial heat.

"Wait, wait! Don't break the floor!" Vaelric shrieked. "I’m on the floor! Don't—"

BOOM.

The basement floor disintegrated into jagged chunks. Vaelric let out a high-pitched, undignified scream as he plummeted into the darkness of the sewer below. He landed with a heavy, wet thud in three feet of freezing sludge, the impact knocking the wind out of him.

"Is... is everyone dead?" he groaned, rolling onto his back.

Silence followed, save for the rhythmic dripping of water and the distant, muffled echoes of the pack howling above.

Vaelric sat up, shivering. The glowing veins on his chest were fading, leaving behind a dull, pulsing hum that echoed against his ribs. He pressed a hand to his sternum, his eyes widening.

Thump-thump.

That was his heart.

Thrummm.

That was something else.

A heavy, ancient, and entirely rhythmic thrumming that didn't match the pace of his own blood. It was slower. Deeper. It felt like a mountain breathing inside his ribcage.

Vaelric reached into his shirt, his fingers brushing over skin that felt like it had been tempered in a forge.

"Okay, Vaelric," he whispered to the dark, empty sewer, his voice trembling with a mix of terror and hysterical laughter. "You ate a god. And now your heart is keeping two different beats."

He tapped his chest, feeling the conflicting rhythms collide under his fingertips.

"One is mine," he muttered, staring into the abyss of the tunnel. "And the other... the other is definitely not human."

The distant howl returned, closer this time, but as he listened, Vaelric realized the sound didn't scare him anymore. The thrumming in his chest hummed in harmony with the darkness, and for the first time in his life, he felt... hungry. Not for food. For something much, much bigger.
