"Please," Ethan Cole whispered to the nurse standing beside his hospital bed, his voice thin as paper. "Try her office line again. Tell her I don't have much time left."

The nurse dialed the number a third time. Her face stayed carefully blank as she lowered the phone. "Still no answer, Mr. Cole."

Ethan closed his eyes. What he did not know, lying there with his body eaten hollow by cancer, was that at that exact hour his wife Sophia Morgan stood in a small chapel two hours away, signing a marriage license with a man whose face looked carved out of moonlight, smiling at him the way she had never once smiled at her own husband.

He died holding a phone that never rang back.

He opened his eyes again to sunlight.

For a moment he thought his mind was playing one final trick on him before the end. Then a hand shook his shoulder, rough and impatient.

"Get up, cousin. Sophia's coming home tonight and you're lying there like something the cat dragged in. Don't you want to bake her a cake for your anniversary?"

Ethan turned his head. Kyle Whitman stood over him grinning that easy grin, the same one that had fooled him for years. The date on his phone read 2024. His wedding anniversary. The exact day, he realized with a cold drop in his stomach, that his stomach illness first flared so badly he collapsed on the kitchen floor, and Sophia had not come home that night either.

"I'm not baking anything," Ethan said, sitting up slowly, testing this young healthy body like it belonged to a stranger.

Kyle's grin slipped. "Excuse me?"

"You heard me." Ethan swung his legs off the bed, voice flat and even. "I'm done playing house husband for a woman who wouldn't visit me if I dropped dead in front of her."

"That's a horrible thing to say about your own wife."

"It's the truth," Ethan said. "I gave up my whole career for her. I gave up everything I was. I remember standing on that balcony with a blade in my hand threatening to open my wrist just so she'd stay five more minutes on the phone, and she told me if I wanted to die I should do it quietly so it wouldn't embarrass her family."

Kyle's jaw tightened, his voice climbing thin and defensive. "You're exaggerating. Sophia's always been busy, that's all. Running a company isn't easy."

"I loved her like a dog loves the hand that starves it," Ethan said, almost to himself. "Never again."

At the hospital that morning, checking in for a routine test he already knew would come back perfectly clean, Ethan saw him. The doctor. Tall, pale, with a face that belonged on a magazine cover instead of a hospital badge. Two nurses turned their heads to watch him pass without even trying to hide it.

He is the moon, Ethan thought, watching the man disappear around a corner. And I was never anything but the dirt under her shoes on her way toward him.

I believed a marriage certificate meant something, he thought bitterly. That if I waited long enough, cooked enough meals, swallowed enough silence, she would finally turn and see me. A piece of paper never made me her husband. It only made me her servant with a title stitched on.

Back at the townhouse, Kyle was already dusting flour over his hands at the counter like the matter had been settled without him.

"I already cracked the eggs," Kyle said, syrupy sweet. "Come on, don't be difficult. Sophia likes things looking nice for her friends. You know how she is."

Ethan studied him for a long moment. He knew exactly how Kyle was too. A cousin in name only, circling Sophia for years with soft eyes and softer excuses, using family dinners as cover to sit a little too close, to touch her arm a little too long. Ethan had been blind to it once. Not anymore.

"Put the eggs back," Ethan said. "I'm not baking her anything and neither are you. Go home, Kyle."

Kyle's face twisted through several shapes before settling on something ugly. "What's gotten into you? You've never spoken to me this way in your life."

"Maybe I finally woke up."

"Fine," Kyle spat, yanking his jacket off the chair, eyes flashing with something close to hatred. "Enjoy sitting in this empty house all by yourself. See how far that mouth of yours gets you."

The door slammed hard enough to rattle the windows.

Ethan stood alone in the kitchen a long moment, listening to the silence settle back around him. They had never once hired a housekeeper, not even in their first year of marriage, when most couples still pretend to want each other close. Sophia had said it wasn't necessary. He understood now it was only because she was rarely home long enough to need one.

He opened the pantry and found a bag of plain noodles, the cheap kind he used to eat alone in college before Sophia's money and Sophia's rules swallowed his whole life. He boiled water, cracked an egg into the pot, and watched the steam rise with something close to peace settling in his chest.

The noodles tasted like nothing special when he finally sat down to eat. But he could taste them. His stomach didn't twist or burn. His hands didn't shake. He was not dying this time, and for the first time in years he let himself simply enjoy a bowl of food without wondering if it would be his last.

I'm done bleeding myself dry for people who don't even notice the cuts, he thought, chewing slowly. This time I keep what's mine and I give nothing away for free.

He was halfway through the bowl when he heard it. The click of heels on hardwood, sharp and unmistakable, moving through the front hallway. A moment later came the smell that always seemed to arrive before her, expensive and cold, like something bottled and sold at a price he had never once questioned.

Ethan froze with the spoon halfway to his mouth.

In his other life, on this exact night, Sophia never came home at all. Not once, not for a single hour, while he lay curled on the bathroom floor with his stomach on fire and no one in the world to call.

He set the spoon down slowly and stared at the kitchen doorway, waiting.

She was here. And nothing about that made any sense at all.

Chapter 10Whatever Kyle expected to hear from the other end of that phone call, it was not what came next.Sophia's voice cut through the speaker sharp and clear enough that Ethan could hear every single word standing three feet away, and Kyle's face began changing in real time, the charming mask crumbling like wet paper in the rain."Let me be very clear with you," Sophia said, her tone flat and final as a closing door. "I don't know what makes you think you're qualified to work at my company. You have no degree worth mentioning, no work experience that amounts to anything real, and the fact that you called my personal number directly instead of going through proper channels tells me everything I'll ever need to know about your sense of professionalism. You have the manners of a stray cat walking into someone's kitchen and expecting to be fed."Kyle's mouth opened but nothing came out. His hand tightened around the phone until his knuckles turned bone white."And let me add somethin

Chapter 9"No," Ethan said. The single word dropped into the dining room like a stone thrown into still water. Gerald's fork froze halfway to his mouth. The aunt's carefully painted smile cracked at the edges. Even Kyle looked up from his phone screen, surprised enough to stop scrolling for the first time all evening."What did you just say to me?" Gerald's voice went low and dangerous, the same tone he had used when Ethan was a boy and had broken something expensive."I said no," Ethan repeated, calm and steady as a man who had already survived the worst this family could do to him once before. "I'm not calling Sophia tonight to beg for investment money on your behalf. I'm not using my marriage as your personal bank account anymore."Gerald's fist hit the table hard enough to rattle every glass on the surface. "You ungrateful little animal," he snarled, his face flushing dark red. "I raised you, I fed you, I put clothes on your back when you had nothing, and this is how you repay me?

Chapter 8Ethan didn't wait to hear what Nicole would say next. The moment the elevator reached the ground floor he was through the doors and across the lobby before she could call after him. Outside, he swung his leg over his motorcycle, the one he had bought with his own savings long before Sophia's money ever touched his life, and pulled out of the parking lot without looking back. His phone buzzed halfway across the bridge. Gerald Cole's name on the screen."Your aunt's here for dinner," his father said, voice flat and clipped as always. "I expect you at the table by seven.""Fine," Ethan said, and hung up before his father could tack on conditions. He didn't go home right away. Instead he drove east until the streets turned quiet and tree lined, all the way to the cemetery on the outskirts of the city where his mother lay buried under a simple gray stone. He knelt in the grass and pulled a few weeds from around the base of it, smoothing the dirt carefully with his hands."You tol

Chapter 7Sophia's grip tightened on Ethan's arm as the lobby hummed with quiet office traffic around them, every passing employee slowing their steps to glance at the confrontation unfolding beside the elevator."Let go of my arm, Sophia," Ethan said, voice low but firm enough that it carried."Not until you stop this ridiculous performance," she said, jaw locked tight. "I know exactly what this is about. You want money. So let's stop the little act and talk numbers like adults.""I already told you I don't want a single dollar from you.""Right," Sophia let out a short laugh, sharp and ugly as breaking glass. "The devoted little househusband who cooked my meals and folded my laundry for two straight years suddenly wants to walk away with nothing at all? Nobody is that noble, Ethan. You're playing hard to get so I'll double whatever you think I owe you."Ethan pulled his arm free and stepped back, putting the full width of the hallway between them. The humiliation sat hot and heavy i

Chapter 6Sophia had always run herself ragged at the office, skipping meals, drinking coffee instead of water, and her stomach had paid the price for years because of it. Ethan remembered how his cooking used to settle her ulcers back when he still bothered trying to help her. He doubted that mattered anymore. She had someone else now to bring her soup when her stomach turned sour, someone with a far prettier face than his own.Ryan left early that morning for an unexpected work call, apologizing twice before he rushed out the door, leaving Ethan alone to get ready for the interview by himself. He studied his reflection in the mirror for a moment, adjusting his collar carefully. Not the ethereal, magazine cover look of Sophia's precious doctor, but a solid, handsome face all the same, one that had simply been buried under years of exhaustion and neglect. The address Ryan sent him led to a glass skyscraper downtown, and something about the lobby tugged at Ethan's memory the moment he

They sat in Ryan's living room that evening, two beers sweating on the coffee table between them, and Ryan kept circling back to the same question like a dog worrying at an old bone."I still don't get it," Ryan said, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. "You loved her, man. Really loved her. I watched you turn yourself inside out for that woman for two straight years. What changed?""She was in love with someone else before we even married," Ethan said. "Some doctor her family never approved of. I finally understood that, really understood it deep down, and something in me just stopped caring what happens to her.""That's disgusting," Ryan said, jaw tight with real anger on his behalf. "She let you build a whole life around her while carrying someone else in her heart the entire time. That's not a marriage, that's a leash with a wedding ring attached to it.""Maybe," Ethan said, staring at the beer in his hands. "I loved her once. I won't pretend I didn't. But I'm done pouri
