Flames shot ten feet into the air, turning the old subway station into a roaring trap of fire and flying concrete.
The wall of yellow fire blocked the elite guards coming from the front tracks, while the back tunnel filled with thick black smoke from the exploded door. The Vance family enforcers shouted orders through gas masks, their tactical rifles flashing as they fired blind shots into the smoke.
"Move! Now!" Maya shouted over the roar of the fire.
She did not wait to see if the guards survived the blast. She grabbed Julian by the sleeve of his black jacket and pulled him hard toward a narrow maintenance tunnel hidden behind an old ticket booth.
Commander Eleanor Vance and Old Man Marrow sprinted right behind them, ducking as a stray bullet pinged off a rusted steel beam overhead. Marrow swung his heavy metal pipe, smashing a broken security camera out of their way so it could not track their faces.
They scrambled into the dark maintenance tunnel just as the burning train car collapsed inward with a massive groan of stressed metal. The heat behind them was intense, baking the air and filling their lungs with the bitter taste of ash.
The tunnel sloped steeply downward, leading deeper into the underground foundations of New Oxford. They ran for what felt like miles, their boots splashing through puddles and slipping on loose gravel. The distant sound of the explosion faded away, replaced only by the heavy sound of their own breathing in the enclosed space.
Finally, Maya slowed down and stopped in front of a heavy steel hatch set into the concrete floor. She pulled a round metal disc from her pocket, pressed it against a keypad beside the hatch, and typed in a fast sequence of numbers.
A loud click echoed through the dark, and the heavy door popped open, revealing a weak beam of yellow light shining up from below.
"Where does this lead?" Eleanor asked, leaning against the damp brick wall to catch her breath. Her silver coat was stained with soot, and her hair was tied back in a messy knot.
"Safe house number four," Maya replied, lifting the heavy hatch wide open. "The Vance family owns the banks, the police, and the upper city streets, but they forgot about the old maintenance network built during the war. Nobody comes down here except us."
Marrow climbed down the iron ladder first, his old joints cracking as he hit the floor below. Eleanor followed him, and Julian went next, holding out a hand to help Maya down last.
They dropped into a surprisingly large underground room. It looked like an old bomb shelter that had been turned into a modern tactical base. Several computer monitors sat on a metal desk against the far wall, casting a soft green glow across the room. A stack of canned food, bottled water, and extra clothes sat neatly on a wooden shelf nearby.
Julian closed the hatch overhead and locked it securely from the inside. He turned around, leaning his back against the cold steel door, and crossed his arms as he looked at his sister.
"Okay, the enforcers are off our trail for now," Julian said, his voice hard. "It is time to talk, Maya. You kept secrets from me for five years. You let me bleed in the train tunnels every single night while you planned this entire breakout behind my back. I want the whole truth right now."
Maya walked over to the metal desk and dropped her hoodie onto a chair. She did not look away or try to avoid his eyes. Her face was calm, but her jaw was set tight.
"You think I enjoyed watching you suffer?" Maya asked, her voice dropping into a quiet, sharp tone that filled the silent room. "You think I wanted to spend five years pretending to be weak and sick in a tiny room while the Vance family watched our every move through hidden cameras?"
"You could have told me," Julian shot back, taking a step forward. "We could have planned it together. We were partners."
"If I had told you the first day, your face would have given us away," Maya said, stepping right up to him so they were face-to-face. "You are too honest, Julian. You wear your heart on your sleeve, and Lord Vane would have read your mind in two seconds flat. The only reason our plan worked is because you genuinely believed I was dying. Your pain was real to them, which made the lie foolproof."
Julian clenched his fists so hard his knuckles turned white. He wanted to yell at her, to shake her, to tell her how much it hurt to realize his entire life for the last half-decade had been a calculated performance designed by his own sister. But then he looked into her dark eyes and saw the heavy exhaustion hidden beneath her fierce exterior. She had carried the weight of a five-hundred-year prison break entirely on her own shoulders, taking all the guilt and danger so he did not have to bear it alone.
Before Julian could answer, Marrow broke the silence, walking over to the computer desk and tapping the keyboard. The green screens flickered, bringing up a detailed digital map of New Oxford's streets, banks, and corporate towers.
"The girl played a dangerous game, boy, but she saved our necks," Marrow said, pointing his finger at a flashing red dot on the map. "Now look at this. While we were locked in the time prison, the Vance family transferred all our family assets and corporate shares into their main holding account. They think we are dead."
Eleanor stepped closer to the screen, her eyes narrowing as she read the financial data. "If they control the holding account, they control the entire energy grid of the upper city. We cannot fight them with just fists and pipes. We need capital, and we need access to the high-society boardrooms."
Maya turned away from Julian and walked over to the desk, her expression shifting instantly from personal defense to pure, cold strategy. She typed a new command into the terminal, bringing up a list of names and security codes.
"We do not need to fight them head-on," Maya said, a slow, confident smile spreading across her face. "The Vance family thinks they won because they trapped us in the slums. But they left their digital backdoors wide open when they updated the city grid last month."
Julian walked over beside her, looking down at the screen. "What are you planning?"
"Revenge," Maya said simply. "We are going to hack into their main bank account tonight, drain their primary corporate funds, and use their own money to buy out the smaller syndicates in New Oxford. Once we control the streets, we drag Lord Vane out of his ivory tower and make him pay for every single year he stole from us."
Julian stared at the map, feeling the last bit of his anger melt away into a cold, focused determination. The old life was gone. The time loop was broken. They were finally in control of their own fate.
"What is our first move?" Julian asked, resting his hand on the edge of the desk.
Maya looked at him, her smile turning into a sharp, dangerous grin. "We hit the central data vault at the Vance Financial Tower tonight. And we are going to need inside access to get past their biometric security."
Before anyone else could speak, the computer monitors on the desk suddenly flickered off, plunging the room into total darkness except for the flashing red emergency light above the door.
An automated alarm began to beep softly from the speaker box on the wall.
Warning. Unauthorized remote access detected. Security sweep in progress.
Eleanor pulled her silver dagger out instantly, her eyes darting toward the ceiling hatch. "They did not trace our escape tunnel. They tracked the computer signal the second we logged into the grid."
The heavy steel hatch above their heads suddenly let out a loud, grinding metallic screech as someone from the outside began cutting through the locks with a plasma torch.

The armored guardian did not slow down, its glowing red eyes burning with absolute focus inside the dark helmet as it prepared for a second strike.Commander Eleanor Vance raised her pistol and fired a rapid succession of bullets straight at the joints of the silver armor, but the metal plates absorbed the impact without leaving a single scratch. The Glass Bridge

The heavy explosion rocked the underground chamber, shattering two of the machines into smoking pieces of twisted metal, but three more rolled forward from the dark wall panels to take their place.Commander Eleanor Vance fired her pistol rapidly, the bullets pinging harmlessly off the heavy armor of the oncoming machines. Old Man Marrow swung his iron pipe at a stray mechanical arm, but the sheer force of the blow rattled his tired bones and knocked him back against the wall."We are running out of time and ammo!" Eleanor shouted over the deafening roar of the turret guns.
The Council's Trap
