The giant golden door in the sky creaked open, spilling blinding white light across the empty dark void.

Julian fell fast through the air, tumbling past spinning gears and floating clocks. Beside him, Commander Eleanor Vance and Old Man Marrow dropped like stones, shouting as the rushing wind pulled at their clothes. None of them could use their magic here. This was the raw core of the time prison, the place where reality ended and the rules of the world broke down completely.

Up ahead, Maya hovered right in front of the massive open doorway.

She did not look like a sweet, sick girl anymore. Her black leather jacket whipped around her shoulders in the fierce wind, and her dark hair streamed behind her. A wide, triumphant smile lit up her face as she reached out and touched the glowing frame of the golden door.

Julian pushed his arms out, forcing his body to cut through the heavy wind. He had to stop her before she opened the gateway all the way. If the ancient prison broke open, the old bosses of the magical world would escape into New Oxford, and millions of innocent people would pay the price for a war that started centuries ago.

Maya! Julian shouted, his voice carrying across the empty space. Stop this right now! You are destroying everything!

Maya turned her head and looked back at him. Her eyes flashed with a bright, cruel light.

You still do not understand, big brother, Maya called out, her voice loud and clear over the rushing wind. "This city is built on lies. The Vance family locked us away, stole our memories, and forced us to live the same miserable life over and over again. I am not destroying the world. I am taking it back.

She pressed both hands hard against the center of the golden door.

With a deafening roar, the door swung completely wide open.

A thick wave of dark, heavy smoke rushed out from behind the gateway, spreading across the sky like spilled ink. From inside the open door, giant shadow creatures with glowing red eyes began to crawl out, their sharp claws scratching against the golden frame as they prepared to drop down into the city below.

Eleanor fell past Julian, her face pale with absolute panic. "She broke the seal! Malakor, if those things reach New Oxford, nobody survives!

Old Man Marrow landed hard on a floating platform of rusted gears nearby, coughing up dust as he scrambled to his feet. He pointed a shaking finger at Maya. She tricked us all! She used the pawnshop core to bypass the lock!

Julian did not care about the city right now. He did not care about the monsters or the ancient kings. He only cared about the girl standing on the edge of the open door. Five years of bleeding in the dark train tunnels, five years of believing he was protecting a sick sister, all of it boiled up inside his chest into a hot, blinding rage.

He threw his arms forward, letting the purple magic inside him burst free without holding back.

A beam of bright, fierce light shot straight from Julian's hands, aiming right for the space beside Maya. The light hit the golden frame of the door with a loud crash, sending a shockwave through the air that knocked Maya off balance.

She stumbled forward, her smile dropping instantly. She turned around and glared at Julian, her expression turning ice cold.

You always ruin everything, Maya snapped, raising her hand.

A sharp spike of black ice formed in her palm and hurled directly at Julian's chest.

Julian twisted to the side at the last possible second. The ice spike grazed his shoulder, tearing his jacket and drawing a line of hot blood, but he did not slow down. He kicked off a floating clock hand, launching his body straight across the gap toward the open doorway.

He landed hard on the stone platform right in front of Maya, sliding across the dusty ground before grabbing her by the jacket collar.

Maya gasped, her eyes widening in genuine shock for the first time. She tried to raise her hand to cast another spell, but Julian pinned her arms against her sides, pressing her back hard against the golden frame of the door.

It ends here, Maya, Julian said, his breathing heavy as he stared straight into her eyes. Close the door.

I cannot close it, Maya whispered, her voice finally losing its calm edge. A bead of sweat rolled down her cheek. "Once the gate opens, it needs a sacrifice to lock again. A royal blood sacrifice.

Julian froze. "What are you talking about?

Before Maya could answer, a heavy hand grabbed Julian by the back of his collar and yanked him backward with incredible strength.

Julian lost his grip and tumbled across the platform. He looked up to see Old Man Marrow standing over Maya, holding a heavy iron chain in his hands. Marrow's cloudy eyes were wild and desperate, completely different from the tired shopkeeper he used to be.

The boy does not understand, Maya, Marrow said, wrapping the iron chain tightly around Maya's wrists before she could fight back. You cannot just open the door and walk away. Someone has to stay behind to hold the lock from the inside.

Maya struggled against the chain, her face twisting in sudden fury. "Let me go, Marrow! You promised!

I promised to help you break the family, Marrow replied, his voice heavy with sorrow. I did not promise to let you destroy the whole timeline.

Eleanor rushed onto the platform, sliding to a stop beside them. She grabbed the other end of the chain, her face set like stone. "Help us push her through, Malakor. It is the only way to seal the gate.

Julian stood up slowly, staring at his sister. Maya looked back at him, her dark eyes filled with a desperate, burning plea that he had not seen since the days she pretended to be sick in their small apartment.

Julian, Maya said, her voice dropping to a soft, broken whisper. Don't let them do this. I did it all for us.

Julian took a step forward, his heart hammering against his ribs. He looked at Eleanor, then at Marrow, and finally back at Maya.

Before he could reach out to pull her away from the edge, a massive shadow hand reached out from inside the open doorway and grabbed Maya firmly by the shoulder, pulling her backward into the dark void.
