The black SUV rolled to a stop at the entrance of Capriccio, a restaurant that only the top one percent ever walked into without checking the prices first. Its glass walls glittered under the city’s lights, with winds blowing through the wind chimes hanging from the roof. It gave a calming feeling to the atmosphere.

Ethan stepped out of the vehicle, adjusting the cuff of his shirt. Even without trying, he carried an aura that made the valet pause even though he didn’t recognize who he was.

  • This isn't romance

Axel was still doing the math in her head when she realized that it was going to cost him a lot to acquire the back, not to mention the fact that they had no real reason to sell off the company. The bank had been so optimized that they had barely ever made any losses in the past half decade, so convincing them to sell would be next to impossible. It would involve probably a double payment of what the company is worth. The scale of the cost of such a decision was heavy, and it hit Axel like a delayed shockwave. For a moment, just a brief moment, her mind betrayed her. A thought slipped into her head uninvited, but it felt dangerously warm to think of, and she couldn’t stop the thought.‘Does that mean I matter that much to him?’ she thought to herself as a warm smile began to form on her face.Ava caught the shift with the side of her eyes instantly and scoffed.“Don’t read into it,” she said firmly. “This isn’t romantic.”Axel flushed. “I didn’t…”“You did,” Ava cut in, not giving Ax

  • Beautiful eyes

“Master Ethan,” Ava cleared her throat at the first chance she got, so she could remind him of the need to return home without interrupting their conversation in a disrespectful manner.“What is it?” Ethan raised his head to her.“You have work to get back to tomorrow sir,” Ava said.“You should consider rounding up here so you can be well rested for tomorrow’s activities, sir.”She didn’t want to have to use this sentence, because she didn’t want him going back to the office, at least, not for another week. With her statement just now, she had basically given him ammo to use against her when she suggested he should stay home for a while to let things cool off.But it was either that or she would be unable to get the information she wanted on the shoot out from him.Ethan looked at Axel for a moment then nodded.“I will have to leave now, Ava is right,” he said as he got up.“Thank you for taking out time to check in on me, I really appreciate it… Ethan,” she paused before saying his

  • beyond all odds

When she finished, silence settled between them again for a moment before Ethan finally cleared his throat and spoke.“I can intervene,” he said with a low but audible tone.Axel looked at him at the point like she was confused, trying to figure out where his response was coming from.Ethan sat up in his spot on the couch and spoke a little clearly.“I can intervene with whatever is going on at your place of work… if you want me to, of course,” he added that last part to assure her that there was no pressure.Axel looked up at Ava that was already looking at them at this point, still at the window, and Ethan gently held her cheek, softly directing her eyes back to him.“Don’t worry about Ava, you don’t need her permission for this,” Ethan said, knowing that if Ava gave Axel a single look, Axel will lose every inclination to say yes, so he pulled her eyes down to his to make sure her decision here was her decision fully.“No!” Axel shook her head immediately, removing his hand from her

  • Tell me about today

“Oh for God’s sake,” Ava was already getting pissed.“Step aside,” she said and pushed past Axel, forcing her way into the house before gesturing for Ethan to walk in.Ethan walked into the house with Ava following behind him immediately, leaving Axel at the door for a moment before she quickly tried to recover from her thoughts and shut the door. She shut the door and turned to watch her guests. She caught herself watching just Ethan though, but she didn’t stop herself. She managed to convince herself that it was fine because she had spent more time seeing Ava than she saw Ethan since she came to his home. She knew that that was a lie, but she held on to that lie and just kept watching him.He looked different from the last time she’d seen him, which was just earlier today, but so much had happened with her today that it felt like it had been a while since she last saw him. He looked quieter now, and from the way he had spoken to her at the door a moment ago, he was a lot less sharp

  • Self-sabotage

Axel stood in the middle of her new apartment, clad in grey pajamas as she tried hard to convince herself it felt like home.It didn’t.Ava had gone out of her way to fix the place up before she closed from work for the day.The place was clean, modern, and thoughtfully arranged, but that was just about it, nothing about it felt unique to her, or to anyone, it was all just plain and bland. At least, while at the Villa, even if it also didn’t feel like it was home, a lot of things there felt personal, like there were stories behind them. Here though, there was literally nothing. The place had neutral walls, minimal furniture, lights that were bright enough to erase shadows but she was not feeling any comforting warmth from them.Nothing here bore her imprint yet, and there was still the fact that it was all temporary, so… she couldn’t even hope to create any memories or personalize anything in here.Everything was temporary. That was the word that kept circling in her head, temporary.

  • Abandoned

The answers Ava was giving were immediate and unapologetic. It was probably the first time he could remember that she had talked to him for so long without calling him Master Ethan or any of the titles he usually would have had to repeatedly remind her not to use.For a brief moment, it made him worried that she might be seeing him in a different light, but he eventually pushed the thought aside.Ava was too loyal to let an incident like that redefine how she saw him. After a while, the conversation drifted back to Axel without friction this time.Ethan was a lot more relaxed talking about it now, and even though he knew that Ava had her personal bias towards Axel, the tension that had earlier sharpened every word was now absent.Ava explained again, but now with detail instead of rushing through it like it was some insignificant event.“Alexander Cole isn’t targeting her,” she said. “I mean, he does want her back, but not as much as he wants to lay his hands on you.”“His target is y
