“Derek, we’re in a serious situation right now. Los Vangees County, which borders our city, is facing the worst wildfire in its history.” The call came from Deputy Captain Brett Holland.

Derek, who answered the call, turned toward the TV to look at it again, carefully examining the live broadcast.

“The fire has already crossed several ridges and is now threatening residential areas and resorts; we need to act immediately to address the situation,” he added.

Faintly over the phone, Derek could hear the man coordinating with others; the hustle and bustle and the escalating tension there were clearly audible through the line.

Despite having deployed all local firefighting forces, the situation was completely out of control. The state government had activated the inter-county mutual aid protocol, and the Derek team from Vendric County was currently being deployed to the front lines.

This mission is extremely dangerous; in fact, on-the-ground reports continue to update the number of fatalities in Los Vangees—people who have died as a result of the fire while trapped and suffering from respiratory distress due to the smoke engulfing the area, a situation that is growing increasingly severe.

Heavy, deep breaths echoed there. “I know you’re not in the best condition right now—you’ve just been injured in today’s incident. I’m sorry I have to ask you to join us, Derek.”

Derek lowered his head. “No, Captain Brett, I’m fine. I’ll take part.”

A sigh of relief could be heard on the other end. “I appreciate that, but Derek, you should take a moment to say a proper goodbye to your family…” His sentence trailed off; he paused for a moment, then continued, “This might take a little longer.”

Derek nodded, they both understood what he meant. In his words, he was indirectly reminding Derek that the risk of being on a rescue team was not returning to his family’s embrace even after the fire was extinguished. “I understand.”

After hanging up the phone, Derek stood frozen in place, a final wave of emotion surging through his chest. Even though their marriage had fallen apart beyond repair, they had been husband and wife for three years. He felt he had to at least say a few words of farewell before plunging into the hell of death that might take his life and leave him gone forever.

However, when he looked up, Erin and Dick had already changed the TV channel. The two of them sat together on the sofa, looking like the perfect family in a photo—a real family, because even he had never managed to bring her together to laugh like this.

Though he was swallowing his grief, Derek didn’t want to leave without an explanation. But just as Derek opened his mouth to speak, Erin shot him a hate-filled glare.

She yelled at him, “What are you waiting for? Get out of here—just seeing you makes me angry!”

Derek swallowed his words. He then headed to his room, took out all his belongings, packed them up, and realised with bitter irony that everything he’d accumulated over the past three years fit into a single small suitcase.

He woke up feeling empty as he left the room he’d shared with Erin; for the last time, he gazed at the bed before leaving his house key on the shelf and walking out the door forever, his footsteps drowned out by their cheerful laughter fading behind him.

When Derek arrived at the station with his suitcase, Deputy Captain Brett was surprised. He had asked Derek to say goodbye, but this wasn’t what he’d imagined. “Why did you pack all your things?” he asked with concern.

He could tell something was going on with Derek because his face looked so distraught.

Derek tried to give a faint smile. “I didn’t want Erin to be heartbroken if I didn’t come back, so I brought them.” He didn’t want to burden his team with his failed marriage.

Brett let out a heavy sigh; he thought Derek didn’t want to leave a trace and cause his family pain, but he also sensed Derek was hiding something. Still, he didn’t want to press the issue, so he just patted his shoulder gently. “All right, get ready quickly.”

Just then, the other Vice Captain, Christian Browning, strolled over with his cronies to show off. He glared at Derek with scorn on his face.

Christian was the son of an influential figure; essentially, his current position had been bought by his family. Meanwhile, headquarters was deciding between Derek and Christian for the captain’s seat that would soon be vacant. Christian knew full well that Derek was far superior to him in both skill and the respect of the crew.

To curb Derek’s rising popularity, Christian abused his authority by assigning Derek to the most dangerous missions, while his own group remained safely resting at the station.

Christian flashed a fake smile. “Listen, Derek, this isn’t just any ordinary fire. If you disobey orders or make a mistake, you’ll face suspension upon your return.” He paused briefly with a malicious tone before adding, “Of course, that’s assuming you make it back alive.”

“Cut the crap, Christian!” Brett cut in firmly, his gaze sharpening as he fixed it on the man.

Unable to tolerate such blatant disrespect, Brett coldly approached him and said, “You’d better watch your attitude. This is a life-or-death emergency—not the time for petty office politics.”

Those words stung his ego; he shot a glance at Derek, who stood there silently, his gaze sharp. Yet, reluctant to start a fight before the mission, he softened slightly and chose to back down, casting a dark look at Derek. “You’d better not give me a reason there,” he muttered.

Derek, whose head and heart were swirling with various problems, simply brushed off Christian’s attitude as a passing breeze—something he didn’t need to take to heart.

Because of that, she tried to take the initiative.Derek turned toward her. The woman was also injured; letting her carry Erin would only make matters more complicated for him later. He then scanned the parking area. “You came in your car, right?”Kitty nodded. “Yes, I didn’t drink. So I can drive.”Derek nodded. “Just wait at St. Louie Hospital. I’ll take Erin there, and I’ll leave the rest to you.”Kitty agreed and hurriedly headed to her car. She moved first, while Derek only started his car after ensuring Erin was seated safely in her place. In the middle of the trip, Erin began to stir. She turned and realized Derek was still there and began to speak, “I knew you would come, Derek.” She smiled toward the man.Derek glanced at her briefly, acknowledging the sound of

  • Misunderstanding

“Derek, why did you take so long…” Before Erin could finish, she lost consciousness and fainted.Derek stared at her coldly. He wasn't sure what he felt seeing Erin in such a dishevelled state. But clearly, the woman’s destruction didn't make him feel okay either; seeing her smooth, beautiful face bruised made him feel sympathetic. He brushed the scarred man’s hand away roughly, sending the man stumbling back. From behind, Kitty ran quickly to approach them, standing not far from Derek. She looked at Erin, crying in guilt. “Miss, Miss, please forgive me for being late.” She knelt there in regret.Kitty was quite sincere toward Erin; Derek knew that. He let out a soft sigh as he watched the woman blame herself for Erin’s madness. He knew Kitty would obey whatever Erin ordered, and it was clear that this situation wasn't her fault. He noticed Kitty’s face and hands were also injured, which only fueled his fury further.“What exactly did you people do?” Derek asked Kitty coldly.Kitty lo

  • Saving her again

“Come on, honey, come with us.” The two men led Erin further inside, navigating through corridors Erin had never visited before. They brought her into a private room and locked it. Inside, they laid her down on the bed; her body writhed slowly as she moved her hands to feel the surface of the mattress, then felt safe and comfortable.Meanwhile, the two men stood before her, watching the scene with passionate gazes. “She really has such beautiful curves.” They watched as she lay on her side. The curves of her side formed a shape exactly like a Spanish guitar: a deep, narrow waistline, wide hips, and well-formed, firm buttocks of just the right size. The men grew wilder as they looked at her body, even peering into the gap of Erin’s open dress. “Undressing her would certainly be an incredible pleasure.”The man with the sinister-looking scar on his face nodded in agreement. “I feel like I want to bury my face right between her breasts. It’s such a shame if we just watch her without doin

  • Trap on trap

“Okay, we need to rest, guys.” Erin rose from her seat. Her disappointment at Derek’s reaction made her lose focus. She returned to the bar table, leaving the men who were hungry for her body staring in disappointment. Her hands clenched tightly as her eyes continued to read the words on Derek’s reply screen. Her face sharpened, and her eyes burned with rage. “So, you think you can just dump me like that?”She stared at the glass in front of her, grabbed it, and downed it in one gulp. “Pour another.” She demanded of the bartender.Seeing this, Dick, who was slowly sobering up, took the glass from her. “Slow down. Let’s just enjoy the party; no need to rush.”Erin didn’t care; she snatched the glass back and drank again. After her first plan failed, Erin shifted to another. She intended to do something extreme. She wanted to destroy herself as a way to punish Derek and prove that it was he who had pushed her to the brink of ruin.Dick smiled. On the surface, he told Erin to slow down.

  • Black dress trap

“Who does he think he is, daring to act like that toward me!” Erin slammed her bedroom door shut with a violent force.Because of Derek’s demand for a divorce, Erin became enraged and left the hospital that very second. She could not accept Derek’s attitude toward her, yet she also refused to let him go.The woman threw herself onto the bed, her hands clenching the bedsheets tightly, her face flushed with fury. “Derek, you will never slip through my fingers. You will be mine forever until the day I decide to let you go.”She believed she knew Derek inside and out. She knew what kind of man he was, and she knew that, fundamentally, he was a good person. Therefore, she needed to do something to win the sympathy and attention of that "good man," and she was certain it would be easy. She then got up and immediately began formulating a plan. “Dick, let’s party tonight.” She contacted the man and hung up the phone as soon as she heard his affirmation on the other end.A smile spread across

  • His final decision.

“Are you awake?” Fae entered the room where Derek was being treated. The room hardly resembled a hospital; it looked more like a luxury suite in a grand mansion. Thanks to the West family’s wealth, Derek could enjoy such comforts without having to ask; luxury, control, and convenience had now become standard for him.Derek glanced toward the door to welcome her. “I believe I’ve been asleep for quite a while.” He didn't remember exactly what had happened the previous night, at least not until he heard the explanation from Victor and the attending physician while Fae was away. From Victor, he heard that Fae had been frantic, shouting loudly and demanding that Derek be rushed to the hospital for serious care. Fae had waited by his side all night and only returned home that morning to change, promising to come back to check on him.Hearing that, Derek felt touched and found himself unconsciously longing to see her again.Brett might have lied about the true severity of Derek’s condition,
