Rufus took a step forward, his bloodshot eyes locked on Julius.

Before he could even raise his fist, something hard cracked against the back of his skull.

He looked up and he saw a rod in Julius hands, tightly clenched and his mouth grated into a frown.

It was the same rod he had used to clear out the zombies downstairs so they could live.

Rufus dropped to the ground with a heavy thud. His face slammed against the cold tiles, with blood gushing out from his injury and pooling up right beneath his cheeks.

Julius stood over him, breathing hard, gripping the iron rod with both hands with a bright smile on his face like he just finished a life saving mission.

"Stay down, you pathetic dog!" Julius spat, blood still dripping from his broken nose.

Rufus rolled on the floor in agony. His head felt like it had been split open. Every wound from the zombie fight outside flared back to life, blood flowing from his body like streams.

He tried to push himself up but his arms gave out. His vision blurred, drifting in and out of motion.

Just then, the universal alarm chimed again.

This time it was different, and more violent. Even the voice of the announcer sounded scared and frantic.

The sound cut through the air like a scream.

The emergency radio crackled to life.

"Priority alert. Far worse zombie rampage confirmed. Direct attack on the city led by mutants. Zom Mutant forces have breached all perimeters. Seek maximum protection immediately!"

Julius and Mia exploded into panic.

"We have to go! We have to go now!" Mia shrieked, grabbing her things.

"The suits! Where are the suits?" Julius barked, spinning around the room.

They both spotted the zombie suits at the same time. The ones Rufus had carried through blood and death. The ones he had brought for himself and Mia.

They tore into the suits without hesitation.

Julius wrestled his own with frantic speed, his fingers working the buckles like his life depended on it. Mia pulled hers over her bridal dress, the white fabric bunching and tearing as she forced the gear over it.

Within minutes they were sealed and moving toward the door.

They attempted to make a run for it, leaving Rufus bleeding on the floor like garbage.

"Mia."

It barely came out as a whisper. Blood and pain gushed from his mouth with every word.

She stopped at the door. She turned around slowly.

Rufus searched her face desperately. Looking for guilt. For pity. For the smallest trace of shame.

There wasn't a trace of guilt, pity, or even shame in her eyes. She looked almost proud of what she had done.

"You should be happy, Rufus," she said, her voice cold and casual through the suit's speaker. "At least you will get to rejoin your family soon."

The words hit him harder than the rod had.

His mother, sister and everyone who had died thinking he was fighting for love.

Mia turned and walked out without looking back. The door clicked shut behind her.

Anger and pain coursed through Rufus like fire. His heart pounded violently against his chest, pumping agony into every layer of his being.

He hoped for a second chance. Just one more chance to make things right.

His trembling hand found his mother's ring. The one she had given him during the Apocalypse. The one she told him to have on at all times.

He rubbed the worn metal slowly, remembering her voice, her fierce eyes even as the world crumbled around them.

Keep it on at all times, Rufus. No matter what happens.

He had promised her. Now he closed his eyes and held the ring tighter.

Please, he whispered. If only I could get one more chance to make things right.

Then the wall exploded.

Zombies poured into the room, dragging their feet on the floor. Dozens of them. But these moved with terrible coordination, herded by something that walked among them.

The Zom mutant stepped through the breach.

Half walker, half human, caught between death and something worse. One side of its face was rotting flesh hanging like wet cloth. The other side still looked almost human, twisted and scarred.

One eye was dead and cloudy. The other burned with horrible awareness.

It surveyed the room with cold authority. When its gaze settled on Rufus's broken form, it let out a sound that was almost a whimper.

"Another pitiful human," it rasped, its voice wet and broken. "Take him out. We want to take this territory for ourselves and move on to the next."

The walkers surged forward.

Rufus felt the first bite sink into his shoulder.

Teeth tore through his flesh. The pain should have made him scream. Should have made him thrash and fight like every human being would do.

But the pain was nothing compared to the betrayal that had already consumed him. Mia's cruelty had torn him apart from the inside. There was no room left for anything new.

Instead of groaning and screaming in pain like every other person would do, Rufus smiled.

A broad, broken smile spread across his bloodstained face.

A dry, painful, and sorrowful chuckle rolled up from his chest, scraping past the blood in his throat and escaping into the air.

It was the laugh of a man who had finally realized the truth.

The greatest monsters in this apocalypse weren't the ones eating him alive.

They were the ones who had just walked out the door.

CHAPTER NINETY-SIX Rufus nodded in satisfaction, and a snicker left his mouth while he glanced at Malcolm who almost shed tears.“I thought the bank belonged to him!”“Yes! That’s what he told us!” Malcolm’s friends whispered amongst themselves, their eyes looked at him with so much shock. “This is such a wonderful news, Damian! Who would have thought that the bank belonged to us?” Rufus chuckled softly, giving Damian more reasons to ask the questions that harbored his curiosity. “What has he done, Lord Rufus? Has he offended you?” The Butler looked at Malcolm who gestured to him to plead on his behalf.“He has, Damian. His son insulted me and my friend earlier today, and tonight again, I encountered him.” “I am so sorry, Lord Rufus! My son was very foolish for whatever he did to you at the store! He is going to apologize right away!” Malcolm stood up from his knees and grabbed Oliver whom he dragged closer to Rufus after giving him a slap, ignoring the grunts and blood that oozed

CHAPTER NINETY-FIVE Oliver’s shirt got stained with some of the blood that trickled down his face, but he failed to take cognizance of it because of his rage. With a strong determination to get back at Rufus, he rushed at him again, and grabbed his two legs, attempting to push him down. “What are you doing?” Rufus scoffed, looking down at Oliver who strained and grained futilely without being able to achieve anything. “Get off me.” Rufus got tired of watching Oliver waste his time. He sighed softly and grabbed him on his shoulders before pushing him to the ground effortlessly. He watched him stagger before he landed with his butt again, but that still wasn’t enough to deter him. “I can see that you are not tired, Oliver.” “I am not leaving without a fight! I will make sure that I get you before I back down!” “Even when the odds are against you? Rufus scoffed, looking at Oliver with a little surprise in his eyes. “You have stood in my way twice since today, you will pay! Come o

CHAPTER NINETY-FOUR Rufus looked at the man for a while, and following the thoughts that crept into his mind, he chuckled softly, shaking his head at once. “I still think we should leave this place, Rufus. I am sure we can find somewhere else to sit.” Noah said calmly, looking around in search of another place they could sit. He sighted an empty chair at the other end of the hall, and he sighed before returning his gaze to Rufus. “Over there, Rufus! I see an empty seat. We should go there right now, I can let you sit, I don’t mind standing.” Noah hoped that Rufus was going to agree to what he said, but his mind was already made up, and he refused to budge. “Why don’t you listen to your friend, boy! Leave that place, and find somewhere else to sit!”“No! That’s not gonna happen! If you want me to leave, then you are going to have to make me!” Rufus’s eyes glared at the man, sending cold shivers down his spine and those of his friends. They were dumbfounded, and looked at each other

CHAPTER NINETY-THREE Throughout the day, Noah couldn’t stop thinking about the events of the day. Even when they drove from the vicinity of the store back to the Castle, he couldn't stop staring at Rufus who didn’t even seem like he had spent so much money on a store. When it was finally time for the party, Noah put on the suit he picked from the store, and a pair of brown shoes also picked from the store. “These look nice on you, Noah,” Rufus said while Noah had to walk to the mirror to look at his reflection. “Wow! I can’t believe that this is me.” Noah gasped the moment he saw his reflection in the mirror. He had never dressed in such expensive attire, and he couldn't stop staring. “Come on, Noah. We are going to be late for the party.” Rufus said calmly after adjusting his blue-striped tie with both hands. He was clad in a fancy black suit just like Noah, but their designs were entirely different and spoke of luxury from different angles. As soon as they stepped out of the

CHAPTER NINETY-TWO The air in the room thickened with a lot of tension, and while Caroline was still trying to get a grip on herself, Noah nudged Rufus in an attempt to get his attention, but he refused to look at him while he kept his eyes on Oliver who was still fuming with so much anger inside him. “I really think we should leave this place, Rufus. This is getting out of hand.” Noah whispered to Rufus with a nervous tone, but he stood his ground. “Didn’t you hear me? I asked you to call your Manager! Do it now!”“Please, Mr. Garcia! You don’t need to do this, we can settle it amicably.” Caroline pleaded, but her plea landed on deaf ears. She looked at Rufus almost immediately, giving him gestures to leave, but he refused to listen to her. “If you do not call your Manager right now, I am going to write a bad review about this place, and I will make sure you lose your job! I swear!”“No, please! You don’t have to do that, Mr. Garcia! I will call him, I will call him!” “Yes! Go o

  • Chapter 91

CHAPTER NINETY-ONE Rufus took in a deep breath which he met out slowly in an attempt to get a grip on himself. The demeanor of the saleslady pissed him off greatly, and he tried as much as he could to stop himself from reacting. He looked at Noah, but he seemed to be unbothered about all of that while he occupied his eyes with admiring the suits in front of them. “These are really nice, Rufus! I have never worn a suit before, this is going to be my first time. I am super excited!”“Yeah, I guess.” Rufus managed to smile at Noah while he struggled with his anger. He looked toward the direction the saleslady had gone and saw that she was speaking to some other people with an excited smile on her face. From the look of things, they appeared rich, and she placed much value on them because of their appearance. “Who are those people?” Noah said when he realized that Rufus had been staring at them with a smirk on his face. “Why would she keep us standing for so long? That’s unprofessiona
