"Why do you seem so shocked, baby? You should have known this was always going to happen!" Her voice was twisted and dipped in scorn as she stepped forward.

The air that was supposed to go through Rufus's lungs was sliced off, and he fell back in his steps, confusion running deep into his bones.

He rubbed his eyes, trying hard not to believe the sight that was glaring right before his eyes. He pinched himself, hoping that those words he had just heard were all a sad dream and nothing more.

But when he opened his eyes, the glaring truth of reality stung him right in the heart even more.

"Mia, this has to be a prank, right? It's a prank, right?"

That was the only thing he could think of, and the only thing that seemed close to a valid explanation for what was happening before him.

He could not think of anything else that would make her betray him in such a manner.

Mia shook her head, her looks devoid of pity or even guilt. What was left there was only the stain of disdain and irritation for the one who had once protected her.

"You still aren't awake to reality, are you?" She snapped.

"Wake up, Rufus. If you want to hear the words clearly, I only used you. When I met you before the Apocalypse, I had just lost my boyfriend who had traveled away because we had a little misunderstanding.

And you were trusting; you were basically a fool, a fool that I saw was going to lead me safe and sound through the Apocalypse without any harm, a fool that was going to go out of his way to help me.

And during the Apocalypse, I found my boyfriend. That's where the twist came in; there was no need to discard you just yet because I still had a little use for you!" She stepped forward from the bed and circled him. "I needed you to carry me through the Apocalypse while I had my secret relationship at night."

Julius, the man that was with Mia, drew closer to her, picking her up by the waist while she let out a slight moan that said, "I have had a lot of practice to learn the perfect pitch."

"I have to thank you, Rufus, for being the fool that takes care of my girl for me, taking her through the Zombie Apocalypse. We wouldn't have been able to see it through without your help.

However, now that the Apocalypse is over, we no longer need your help! Plus, you didn't really expect that a lady as gorgeous as Mia would stoop so low as to actually get married to someone like you, huh? You must really be a joker if you ask me!" He laughed.

"And isn't his life the biggest joke of all time!"

Each word pierced a stab right into Rufus's heart. The realization hit him hard now, seeing his wife dripping and comfortable in another man's arms.

The truth was glaring right in his eyes right now, and memories rushed through his mind in countless waves.

Now he realized why she had made him get multiple zombie suits for expeditions that didn't make sense.

She was ready to risk her life just to see her true love, returning home to garbage and staying away from him like he was some disease, Ebola maybe, that his touch could get her infected.

His heart raced faster, pounding against his chest like it was going to burst through.

She had wrapped up her distance as a vow that she had made to her mother to keep herself a virgin until she found the man that was perfect for her, which was clearly not him.

And then, he had been so stupid to even dare to believe her. Even worse, he was happy because of her sheer determination, not knowing that it was actually derived from her disdain for him.

"So all this time that we spent together, it means absolutely nothing to you?" Rufus's words finally flowed out through his pain with sparse words, just as much as the gravity of the weight on his heart could let him muster.

Mia chuckled so casually.

"Seems you're getting things right now!"

Rufus scoffed. His face was bolted with pain as he tugged at the ring that he wore, the one he had planned to give her during their marriage as the greatest sign of his truth.

"My mother died trying to save you, Mia. My sister also died trying to save you, even as selfish as she was, because she thought that we had something! So their sacrifices were all for waste!"

It was like his heart was going to shatter at the moment, and even worse, it seemed like he was going to pass out.

He could not think about it, the fact that all the sacrifices that they had made for him and their relationship were all for waste.

The image of his mother taking her last breath for Mia was still too fresh in his mind.

The way that she still had a smile on her face even though she knew that she was dying at the moment.

She had held both of their hands together, blessing their reunion. He was so stupid to have thought back then that their sacrifices, though painful, were actually worth it.

"Oh, that!" For the first time since their confrontation began, it seemed like Mia actually showed pain, even though it was just a flash of a second.

Then she burst out into laughter. It turned out that it was just a sham again. Rufus's hands squeezed tightly until eventually, they bled.

"Yes, your mother was just like you—stupid and ignorant. And as for your sister, she would have lived if she had just kept her filthy little nose out of things that weren't her business!"

Rufus's breath instantly hardened and his hands clenched even tighter.

"What are you talking about?" He demanded, the icy tone in his throat causing the temperature in the room to keep dropping by the minute.

"You are so ignorant to the facts that are all around you, aren't you?" She smirked.

"That leaves me with the pain of having to tell you everything. But if it will help that one person that was there for me at my lowest during the period of a three-year Apocalypse sleep better at night, then trust me to do that.

With that being said, the truth is that I was the one responsible for your sister's death.

She kept tracking my movements, sensing that something was wrong, and one of the days she actually saw something.

She saw me and Julius having an episode of raw passion. And as I said earlier, your broken ass still had a few uses during the period. Julius was accommodating a lot of persons in his zones; it wasn't too safe there either, and you had a safe haven, no matter how small it was.

So I had to put up with your beautiful slum for as long as it was possible!"

Those words caused Rufus to gag on his own breath, and his eyes almost disappeared into his sockets, the shock causing goosebumps to form throughout every portion of his skin.

He had found his sister on the street with Mia. She had pointed at her before she slumped, and Mia had told him that she had saved his sister's life at the cost of her own.

Rufus had mourned her for days, beating himself up for not being able to defend her from those murderers.

And it turned out that all this while, the murderer had been living under the same roof with him.

His eyes instantly burned bloodshot and his blood boiled over with rage as he stared at Mia. His only intention was to tear her apart, limb from limb, until she felt a fraction of the pain that was stuck in his heart and pumped into every layer of his being by the passing seconds.

Seeing the look on his face, Mia's gaze flinched for the first time—not from guilt, but from the fear that he might do something stupid.

"None of us will be leaving this place alive!" He growled loudly, ready to die alongside them if that was what he had to do to atone for the atrocities that they had committed against him.

CHAPTER NINETY-SIX Rufus nodded in satisfaction, and a snicker left his mouth while he glanced at Malcolm who almost shed tears.“I thought the bank belonged to him!”“Yes! That’s what he told us!” Malcolm’s friends whispered amongst themselves, their eyes looked at him with so much shock. “This is such a wonderful news, Damian! Who would have thought that the bank belonged to us?” Rufus chuckled softly, giving Damian more reasons to ask the questions that harbored his curiosity. “What has he done, Lord Rufus? Has he offended you?” The Butler looked at Malcolm who gestured to him to plead on his behalf.“He has, Damian. His son insulted me and my friend earlier today, and tonight again, I encountered him.” “I am so sorry, Lord Rufus! My son was very foolish for whatever he did to you at the store! He is going to apologize right away!” Malcolm stood up from his knees and grabbed Oliver whom he dragged closer to Rufus after giving him a slap, ignoring the grunts and blood that oozed

CHAPTER NINETY-FIVE Oliver’s shirt got stained with some of the blood that trickled down his face, but he failed to take cognizance of it because of his rage. With a strong determination to get back at Rufus, he rushed at him again, and grabbed his two legs, attempting to push him down. “What are you doing?” Rufus scoffed, looking down at Oliver who strained and grained futilely without being able to achieve anything. “Get off me.” Rufus got tired of watching Oliver waste his time. He sighed softly and grabbed him on his shoulders before pushing him to the ground effortlessly. He watched him stagger before he landed with his butt again, but that still wasn’t enough to deter him. “I can see that you are not tired, Oliver.” “I am not leaving without a fight! I will make sure that I get you before I back down!” “Even when the odds are against you? Rufus scoffed, looking at Oliver with a little surprise in his eyes. “You have stood in my way twice since today, you will pay! Come o

CHAPTER NINETY-FOUR Rufus looked at the man for a while, and following the thoughts that crept into his mind, he chuckled softly, shaking his head at once. “I still think we should leave this place, Rufus. I am sure we can find somewhere else to sit.” Noah said calmly, looking around in search of another place they could sit. He sighted an empty chair at the other end of the hall, and he sighed before returning his gaze to Rufus. “Over there, Rufus! I see an empty seat. We should go there right now, I can let you sit, I don’t mind standing.” Noah hoped that Rufus was going to agree to what he said, but his mind was already made up, and he refused to budge. “Why don’t you listen to your friend, boy! Leave that place, and find somewhere else to sit!”“No! That’s not gonna happen! If you want me to leave, then you are going to have to make me!” Rufus’s eyes glared at the man, sending cold shivers down his spine and those of his friends. They were dumbfounded, and looked at each other

CHAPTER NINETY-THREE Throughout the day, Noah couldn’t stop thinking about the events of the day. Even when they drove from the vicinity of the store back to the Castle, he couldn't stop staring at Rufus who didn’t even seem like he had spent so much money on a store. When it was finally time for the party, Noah put on the suit he picked from the store, and a pair of brown shoes also picked from the store. “These look nice on you, Noah,” Rufus said while Noah had to walk to the mirror to look at his reflection. “Wow! I can’t believe that this is me.” Noah gasped the moment he saw his reflection in the mirror. He had never dressed in such expensive attire, and he couldn't stop staring. “Come on, Noah. We are going to be late for the party.” Rufus said calmly after adjusting his blue-striped tie with both hands. He was clad in a fancy black suit just like Noah, but their designs were entirely different and spoke of luxury from different angles. As soon as they stepped out of the

CHAPTER NINETY-TWO The air in the room thickened with a lot of tension, and while Caroline was still trying to get a grip on herself, Noah nudged Rufus in an attempt to get his attention, but he refused to look at him while he kept his eyes on Oliver who was still fuming with so much anger inside him. “I really think we should leave this place, Rufus. This is getting out of hand.” Noah whispered to Rufus with a nervous tone, but he stood his ground. “Didn’t you hear me? I asked you to call your Manager! Do it now!”“Please, Mr. Garcia! You don’t need to do this, we can settle it amicably.” Caroline pleaded, but her plea landed on deaf ears. She looked at Rufus almost immediately, giving him gestures to leave, but he refused to listen to her. “If you do not call your Manager right now, I am going to write a bad review about this place, and I will make sure you lose your job! I swear!”“No, please! You don’t have to do that, Mr. Garcia! I will call him, I will call him!” “Yes! Go o

  • Chapter 91

CHAPTER NINETY-ONE Rufus took in a deep breath which he met out slowly in an attempt to get a grip on himself. The demeanor of the saleslady pissed him off greatly, and he tried as much as he could to stop himself from reacting. He looked at Noah, but he seemed to be unbothered about all of that while he occupied his eyes with admiring the suits in front of them. “These are really nice, Rufus! I have never worn a suit before, this is going to be my first time. I am super excited!”“Yeah, I guess.” Rufus managed to smile at Noah while he struggled with his anger. He looked toward the direction the saleslady had gone and saw that she was speaking to some other people with an excited smile on her face. From the look of things, they appeared rich, and she placed much value on them because of their appearance. “Who are those people?” Noah said when he realized that Rufus had been staring at them with a smirk on his face. “Why would she keep us standing for so long? That’s unprofessiona
