After a moment of hesitation and thinking, Rachel had made up her mind. She looked at all the men in the room, showing her firm stance on the answer she was about to give.

“I'll do it. I'll go see Davon."

Elias groaned in disapproval as Marcus sighed triumphantly at Rachel's decision. He gave her a small yet dignified nod thanking her for trusting in his plan when Elias walked up to her and held her by her shoulders as if trying to bring her back from an unyielding spell.

“Rachel, you know if you do this you won't be safe anymore. We would help but are you willing to risk your life and your heart just for this? We can find another way. A better way. Think about this."

Rachel stood up matching her godfather.

“Like you said uncle Elias, it's my life and my heart. If I choose to bring down the person that hurt me, that's my decision. I want to do this and I have all of you so I'm sure I'll be fine in the end."

Elias looked into her eyes, hoping to find a shred of doubt or fear but when h

Marcus had ended his search for that day with the police officers, Callum and Coleman before he went back to the precinct dressing room in a sad state. They hadn’t found Mark and they had searched all the places that he would have been hiding out in. His home or former home by the state that they saw the place in, his miniature workplace, his sister’s home which yielded no fruit and the grave where his mother was buried. Marcus wasn’t sure that they would catch him at the latter place, but it was worth a try to the authorities. Mark was literally nowhere to be found. It was as if he disappeared into thin air. “Fuck.” He muttered as he wore his suit Market after changing out of his other clothes. As Marcus scrambled his brain for more possible hiding spots, the door to the room was opened and Callum walked in with the same air of despair at their failed search. “Don’t beat yourself up about it, Marcus. We will find the man.” “I’d want that sooner rather than later, Detective Callum

  • Chapter One Hundred and Forty-Three: SNEAKING AROUND

It was the next day and after the shocking discovery of Mark’s escape act and Estelle’s betrayal over one-sided love the night before, Marcus knew that he could do only three things now. Firstly, he had to get to Estelle and get to the bottom of what she did. She wasn’t gone because she just gave an interview in her home that was still trending. Secondly, he had to begin the search for Mark. He had already informed the officers and told them what they thought they wanted to hear so they were on the job, but he had to have his own men on the prowl also. Lastly, he had to make sure that Rachel and his family had the utmost and most efficient security team that he could get to protect them from the immediate threat of Mark. Last night, after Micah had sent everyone away and Marcus had gotten the ominous call from Mark, he had tried to explain what was going on to the rest of the family, but Rachel wasn’t in the mood or to anyone who saw her, she just didn’t want to be around the man. M

  • Chapter One Hundred and Forty-Two: GONE WITH THE WIND

Marcus walked up to one of his men that still stayed guarding the door and spoke in a low but menacing manner at him. He was still pissed that he had to leave Rachel to her feelings but he was even more pissed at the thought that Mark had managed to escape the mansion on such an important night. “Open the door.” The man didn’t hesitate to do so. He unlocked the door, allowing Marcus to barge into the room and look around. Just like the text he had received said, the bed was disarranged but had no sheets on it, the windows were ajar, the book Mark held some days ago was torn up and strewn all over the floor and Mark himself was nowhere to be found. He truly was gone. Marcus rushed over to the window and looked outside. The sheets that Marcus thought were weird to be missing, were tied together by their ends and connected to a hook in the window. The sheets were fastened to form a makeshift rope which led down but did not reach the grounds completely. The space between the makeshift

  • Chapter One Hundred and Forty-One: FEELINGS

The party went according to what Marcus had planned. The guests were having fun, there was an abundance of food and drinks and due to the ambiance, money was being spent on another donation for a different purpose. Estelle and Rachel had been talking amongst themselves with a new group of women that had formed around them and from time to time they giggled and took a sip of their drinks. Marcus had finished speaking to Gregory some time ago and was now entertaining some couples who really wanted to get some insight into parts of the businesses that they run unanimously. He had his eyes on Rachel and her friend before he turned back to the group he was in. A moment later, he stole a glance in Rachel’s direction once more, but she was gone. Her, Estelle, the group, just gone. While he spoke, he swiveled around and used his eyes to try and find where they had run off to, but he couldn’t seem to find them in the sea of people that he had invited. “I’m sorry but if you could all excuse

  • Chapter One Hundred and Forty: THE EVENT OF THE SEASON

Marcus had finally concluded his planning for the New Year event mostly without Rachel’s help due to her work, much to his dismay. He had also gotten the money he planned to give to Mark but for some reason he chose to hold off on it until after the event, therefore placing the transaction in a rut. Now that he had removed his mind from that, all that remained was the decoration, preparation of food and then the arrival of the guests. He wiped the sweat off his brow as he stood in the scorching heat in just a tank top and sweatpants with a tablet in his hands and a crease on his lip. “No, move it a bit to the left. To the left Andre.” Marcus shouted out as he tried to give directions to the event decorators that were supposed to be making the front of the mansion beautiful but were doing the opposite of their jobs. Or maybe it was just the way Marcus saw it. He just wanted it to be perfect. Marcus sighed as Andre moved the flower arch more to the left than was intended, throwing the

  • Chapter One Hundred and Thirty-Nine: COMING TO AN AGREEMENT

It had been a hectic day with new and confounding information bombarding Marcus by the hour. He had gotten home and was now entering the building to speak to a nemesis he never thought he would have. Marcus checked his watch. 5:09pm already. About three hours before the 8:00pm deadline he had given Mark to make his choice. As Marcus walked up to see Mark he composed himself. Nothing he had heard today would blind or deter him from making the decision he thought was best for protecting his family. He reached the room, his hand hovering over the handle before he took a deep breath and walked into the room.Whoever it was that was inhabiting the body at this point, held the same book Mark had thrown across the room earlier and was reading it. His eyes grazed the book for a moment more before he closed it, set it on the bed and faced Marcus. “Mark.” The person said as Marcus closed the door behind him and took a seat. “Good. Have you made a choice yet? I assume you have since you've cal
