Chapter One Hundred and Twenty-Four: ANSWERS
Jasmine Wei was a hard woman to find. Not because she was trying to lead a quiet life of some sort but because she was one of those people who saw technology as a way of not only your family and unknown people knowing about you but also for the government to spy on you. In other words, a conspiracy nut. The woman had accounts on several apps when she was younger but in the three years leading up to the previous one, she had fallen off the face of the earth. If not for the fact that Lori was able to use her mildly intact credit card information and the medical presence she had in hospitals to track her, they may have never known where she was. Luckily for Marcus, she was in town. Not on business or pleasure. She had come because of her father’s trial which according to some people Lori spoke to, was to see him rot behind bars like he deserved. Good enough for him. Marcus got out of his car and eyed the building he stood in front of. The Great Gatsby. A massive but homey looking bed a
Chapter One Hundred and Twenty-Three: A Prison Visit
Marcus rushed into the mansion after he had basically acted out a scene from fast and furious on the streets leading back to his home. Unlike how he had been when his uncle had betrayed him, his blood boiled fervently at the thought of a cousin from his uncle’s side rearing his head at that time especially when Lori had confirmed what the man had said by the background check she had done. But still how was Chris here? How was he even real? Why didn’t he come forward earlier? Why now, when he had put all this behind him for Christ sake? Marcus had never heard of a son from his uncle, barely even a daughter even though the man had been deceiving him from the beginning but this in its entirety was out of the blue. Marcus moved as fast as he could without alarming anyone he saw in the building, his heart pounding in his chest. He had to tell his father what had just happened. If anyone would have an answer to this, he would. Micah was Eric’s brother after all. He checked every room he th
Chapter One Hundred and Twenty-Two: AN UNCOMMON FOE
The day finally came. The day that Estelle’s assistant, Chris, was supposed to come to Marcus’ company and watch him work or at least, the way Marcus saw it, spy on him and report him in any way. Marcus sat down in his office, his mind racing to what may happen in the next. Estelle had called him earlier and informed him that Chris would be arriving and for some reason, like the last time Marcus had seen the man, he had an uneasy feeling. His thoughts began to dissipate just as his door was opened and Lori popped her head through with a puzzling look on her face. After two weeks of Eric being behind bars Lori had felt comfortable coming back to New York with her family and continuing to work once more for the Wei family. She had a huge hand in putting both Eric and his men behind bars for what they had done and once that was settled it was like a huge weight was lifted off her shoulders. So much so that she felt it safe enough to allow her brother and grandmother to live a life witho
Chapter One Hundred and Twenty-One: ESTELLE MOORE
The dinner between the Wei’s and the Moore’s had come to an end perfectly. Everything more or less went according to plan just as Marcus thought it would and Rachel was now in a good mood about the whole Estelle drama. The Moore’s left the Wei mansion with their bellies full and a big smile on their faces while Marcus, his wife and his father waved them off as their car and their entourage drove away into the night. The Wei family went back into the mansion, said their good night to one another and retired to their separate rooms. Marcus wasted no time stripping off his clothes immediately he entered his room. He forwent the choice to have a bath before going to sleep, went directly to his king sized and plopped down on it. A groan escaped his lips as his head sank deeper into his pillows. He wasn’t frustrated or anything. He was just tired from all the work he had thrown himself into the past few weeks. Marcus sighed and rolled over. To him, the fatigue he was feeling as of now was
Chapter One Hundred and Twenty: A REUNION OF SORTS
A few days went by since Rachel had dropped the bomb about Estelle Moore not liking her. The dinner had been thrown into silence as both Marcus and his father tried to wrap their heads around what she had just said. They asked her about it consistently at the table, but she turned all their requests to know about their history down. In the end she excused herself and left the dining hall to retire in her room, with a sad and grim expression on her face. Now, as Marcus stood outside the mansion awaiting the Moore’s to arrive at the mansion for the dinner, his mind went back to the way Rachel had acted when she let her last sentence slip from her lips. Her downcast eyes and the way she wrung her fingers like it pained her to speak about it. He thought about it and the dinner. Was this the right play? Would she be comfortable with this arrangement? Should he just cancel the whole thing and reschedule? Just as he was having second thoughts about the dinner, several black jeeps drove u
Chapter One Hundred and Nineteen: CLOSED DEAL
“I heard from the grapevine that the Wei’s throw an annual ball around the time of Christmas eve. Should we be expecting such this year now that you’ve joined the family?” Estelle questioned, her voice light as she just had her third glass of wine.“I think so. I mean I would want it to be held this year.” Marcus answered, not really sold on the idea of having to throw a Christmas party when all he wanted for his family was to spend the time alone but open to it happening if the Moore’s wanted to come. Of course, he would cut the guest list by a lot of names to make the party seem homier than lively. Even though they were already in business, he would still like to make a good impression presently. That, he could do.“Good because I want to attend it. It would be a shame if it weren’t.” Gregory said.Marcus chuckled at the thought. These well known and mysterious people wanted to attend a party thrown by his family. It would certainly be an honor and would also shut the mouths of thei
Chapter One Hundred and Eighteen: A NEW VENTURE
Marcus and the rest of his family had gotten home in the nick of time even though they went through the throng of reporters and civilians that ambushed them in front of the courthouse, on the road as they drove by and at their mansion gate. The turnout was a massive shock to the Wei family as they didn’t expect that much people to actually come up to them holding up placards of hope and congratulations and even giving them words of courage and upliftment. It was a nice change of pace for Marcus as his life went from constant attacks and trouble to peaceful and serene. A bottle was cracked open once the family had made it through their gate and glasses were filled with alcohol to celebrate their win against one of their own. A celebration that was more solemn than it was of happiness. The family sat in silence even amidst their so-called celebration as they relived what had happened in the courtroom. It was a hard day even with the win and congratulations that they got
Chapter One Hundred and Seventeen: PUT AWAY
The other trial between Micah against Eric took place almost immediately after the trial between Marcus and the latter. It went exactly how Marcus and the rest of the family saw it going but they didn’t expect Eric not to say anything to them or even look in their direction when he was walked out of the room. Eric and his defense failed woefully after they decided to base their defense on fallacies, goodwill and denial of the evidence. The courtroom was, like before, in shock at the turn of events. Eric Wei did not lose just one but two court cases to his own family members, all in the space of four hours. It was outrageous. A third and fourth case was meant to take place; cases by Lori Hudgins for kidnapping and extortion and Elias Wei, his own father for money laundering and fraud from the company as a fellow shareholder, but the cases were put of until the next day after everyone had had a chance to rest, regroup and reconstruct their evidence and arguments. Surprisingly though, t
Chapter One Hundred and Sixteen: THE TRIAL
In the course of the rest of the interrogation Eric had all but said that he was guilty, even when his lawyer came around and the evidence that was brought by the family to the precinct was reviewed and brought against him, he maintained his innocence. In the end Eric was taken away and was set to stand trial to determine if he would be granted bail amidst the charges that were brought against him.The trial was held the next day due to the severity and status of their name and unsurprisingly to the rest of the family, Eric was granted bail for the amount of three million dollars due to his status and the number of crimes brought up against him. Immediately after the closed hearing, Eric had told his lawyer to get the money out of his accounts but unfortunately for him Marcus and his father had blocked it and removed all the money from it through legal ways of course.Eric had to spend the next week in a jail cell while his court date drew near and the public speculated heavily on wha
