Liam's POV

The room was the definition of technology. Computer screens flashed with strange codes I had never seen with circuit boards were spread all over a table.

It didn’t feel like a bedroom. It felt more like a control room or a tech fortress of some kind.

“Wow.” I said as I looked around. “So this is your hideout.”

Sarah smiled proudly.

“I call it my command center. But ‘lair’ sounds kind of cool too.”

“Cool is an understatement.” I said while still looking. “Are you like… a secret agent? Do you have hidden gadgets like a rope gun or a quiet pistol?” I joked.

She laughed loudly in a weird manner.

“If I were a secret agent Liam you wouldn’t even know. That’s the whole point.”

“Good point.” I was impressed. “Still, this is… a lot. Where did you get all this stuff?”

She shrugged and stepped deeper into the room like she wanted me to look more.

“Most of it is old stuff from others or things I fixed. My dad was a computer guy. He really knew his stuff.” Her voice broke a little i

Epilogue“Be careful, girls!” An elderly lady called with concern as her heart skipped a beat just when two little girls of the same age ran past her in a reckless manner. A much younger woman who was sitting across from her smiled brightly. “You're going to have one hell of a headache with those, Alice,” the Elder groaned.Alice tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, her eyes crinkling with a smile. "I can manage, ma'am," she said, and a soft laugh bubbled out of her. “Besides, Liam always does his best to help when he is around,” she added.“Yeah, speaking of Liam… when is he coming home?” Mrs. Carter asked, adjusting her position.“He was supposed to be home today,” Alice replied, and a tiny shadow of sadness crossed her face. “But when last he called, he told me he'll be coming home tomorrow instead.”Mrs. Carter groaned. “He's all about work these days, am I right?” She asked with furrowed brows.“Not entirely.” Alice's lips stretched into a warm smile, dimples deepenin

Liam's POV“Is everything alright?” Alice asked when she noticed my change in mood.“Yeah,” I replied. “It's just..” I trailed off.The note was from Ryan. Seeing his name there somehow gave me a feeling that he was in the room, but maybe I was just overthinking it.“Mr Carter?” Another waiter approached me. “This way, Mr Carter.” He nudged towards the table where the Mayor sat.I quickly tucked the note into my suit jacket and, with my hand around Alice's waist, we both approached the Table after the servant with Sarah bringing in the rear.“Mr Carter.” The mayor stood up to shake my hand. “Glad you could make it.”I shook his hand firmly and looked him in the eye. The mayor was older than the former mayor, Mayor Callaway, who was also connected with Blackwood and went down when Blackwood finally went down.“Good evening, Mayor.” I greeted.“Oh, call me Jim.” He smiled warmly.“Good evening, Mr Carter.” Agent Londonderry also shook my hand warmly. We all sat down.My eyes scanned the

Liam's POV“I really don't think I should be doing this,” I complained again for what appeared to be the umpteenth time.“We've already established that you're going.” Alice laughed as she helped me fix my necktie. “It's an honor to dine with the new mayor. You dared to go against the most dangerous man the city has ever seen, and even though the odds were against you, you prevailed. The city owes you.”I could only sigh heavily. I really didn't like being the subject of attention that evening, and I did all I could do with Blackwood, not because I wanted glory but because it was simply the right thing to do.Alice was dressed in a long and fitting blood red gown with red lipstick. Her hair cascaded down her shoulders and moved beautifully in the air when she moved. She was the most important thing that had happened to me in all the struggle.“What?” She asked with a smile.I realized I had been staring at her. She was too beautiful to resist anyways. I held her around the waist and p

Liam's POVBut almost at the same time, the doors were blown to bits.“Freeze! Get down now! On the ground now!”I heard the loud orders of the feds and saw the men pouring in with guns at the ready.I felt dizzy, and it was as if the whole room was spinning. I had lost a lot of blood and was very weak at the moment, but I saw Blackwood being pushed roughly to the ground by two FBI agents.I watched him struggling and fuming with rage, and I smiled.“I.. beat…you..” I muttered before the darkness took over.•••A woman was quarreling, but that was in the background, and I could only hear faintly without making out the words she was saying. The sound that filled my head was a constant beeping that seemed to be coming from close by.For some reason I didn't want to open my eyes. I was comfortable this way and wanted to just lie there on my back for a while.A finger gently caressed the back of my hand, and I realized that someone was holding my hand. My eyes snapped open at that point a

Liam's POV“Ryan? What are you doing?” I asked.“Doing what I should have done long ago.” He replied. His eyes hardened as he looked at me. I could see through his eyes that this was not the same Ryan who had come to me offering his help to stop his father. This was the old Ryan I grew up hating with every cell of my body.“You did well, son.” Blackwood smiled triumphantly. “You arrived just in time, too.” He moved closer and patted his son's shoulder.“Once a Blackwood, always a Blackwood. I should have known.” I growled defiantly with my eyes fixed on Ryan. “I was a fool to have trusted you!”“Yes, you were. Still are.” Ryan replied. “You should have realized long ago that this is a battle you can't win!”“Oh, but I have,” I replied. “I beat both of you fair and square. Let the world know you for who you are!”Blackwood laughed. “The so-called evidence you released to the press won't do you any good, Carter.” He said.“Yes.” I nodded. “But I've got something even better.” I pointed

  • CHAPTER 175

Liam's POVI tried as best as I could to crawl into the corner and take cover behind anything I'd find while my eyes quickly scanned my surroundings for the person who shot me.The pain in my shoulder was pretty bad, but I tried as much as possible to ignore it. I had a Glock in my waistband, but I knew it would be worse to draw it now. Whoever shot me was watching my every move.It couldn't have been Blackwood. He couldn't have gotten here so fast. Well, unless he already had someone in the area, he wants to do his dirty work for him.The sound of shoes on tiles came to my ears, and I turned towards the direction it came from. The silhouette of a man came into view before he finally emerged from the shadows, armed with an automatic rifle, which he now held in a cross-hug against his chest.Silas Scratch…He looked as if he had been through hell with bandages on most parts of his body and even one of his hands. He spotted a black eye, and I could see that he even walked with a slight
