Twenty-four hours earlier.

Collins and Anna had been restless since the incident involving John exploded across their social media feeds. The footage had been shared, re-shared, dissected, and discussed endlessly online. They were eager to see him, to check in, to distract him if nothing else. The store visit for the new semester’s outfits had become the perfect excuse to meet up.

Anna had called Collins to pick her up. She was too tired to drive herself and did not want to trouble the family driver for something as casual as a shopping trip. It was supposed to be lighthearted, a friendly day out before classes resumed.

By the time Collins arrived at her gate, Anna was already dressed to perfection — a cute summer dress hugging her frame, a neat high bun drawing attention to the graceful curve of her neck. She had taken extra care, not for Collins, but because dressing well was second nature to her.
