"Brother-in-law, what’s up? Why all the secrecy?"

Heidi asked in a hushed voice.

Joseph didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he leaned in and whispered something into her ear. Heidi nodded repeatedly in response.

As they spoke, Fiona entered the room.

The moment she stepped in, her eyes landed on Joseph and Heidi, who were speaking in hushed tones.

She glanced at them briefly before quickly averting her gaze and walking over to old Mr. Cooper.

Moments later, Joseph and Heidi finished their conversation, and Joseph walked back.

"Old Mr. Cooper, Mr. Morgan and I will take our leave now. Please rest well. If anything happens, have Heidi call me."

Joseph gave a final word of caution, then exchanged a few words with the elderly lady before making his way out with Blake Morgan.

The old lady watched Joseph’s departing figure, her eyes filled with regret and deep emotion.

"Fiona, my dear granddaughter, tell me—what was so wrong with him?"

"When it mattered most, he stepped up. Your grandfather

“What else would I do? Hold you while we sleep, of course.”“I’m only going to hold you. I promise I won’t do a thing.”She sounded so sincere that Joseph almost believed her.“You can hold me and not do a thing?”“You hear yourself, and you believe that?” he said, exasperated.“So what then—you’re not going to let me hold you?”“If you insist, I can’t stop you,” he sighed.“Then I’ll insist. I think you like it when someone takes charge—when someone won’t take no for an answer.”She laughed, bright and shameless, and wrapped herself around him.Her soft, warm body molded against his, and Joseph could feel every perfect line. With a touch like that, how could he possibly sleep? They had promised to behave, but all that lingering and teasing tipped into the inevitable—and entirely predictable.Only when exhaustion finally claimed her did Mason settle into a quiet sleep.Joseph glanced at the woman beside him, still aglow from her own fire, and felt a complicated tenderness. He understo

Joseph was quick in the shower—ten minutes, give or take. When he stepped out and towel-dried his hair, Mason Alvarez beckoned impatiently.“You. Over here,” she ordered, patting the empty space beside her while the quilt cloaked her pale, delicate curves. He had no choice but to climb into bed.“Ms. Alvarez, what are you plotting now?”Her smile put him on alert. He might be formidable, but this woman was no soft touch—always crying that she couldn’t take it, yet always luring and resisting by turns.A more fragile woman would have needed a day or two to recover after such storms. But Ms. Alvarez, it seemed, needed little rest at all.“What, you’re wary of me?”“I’m not going to devour you. I’m only going to treat you well—and make it sweet.”The moment he settled, she pressed herself against him, all warmth and fragrance. He was getting used to it—used to her fearless affection, to that singular scent on her skin that he couldn’t quit. There was something enchantingly dangerous abou

Though Madeline Castillo knew Joseph could hold his liquor, worry still pricked at her. What if something happened?“Auntie, no need. I’ve got him. I’m not drunk,” Joseph said, hoisting Stanley Alvarez onto his back and heading for the house.“You—!” Madeline hurried after him.“Mom, don’t stress. This man’s as strong as an ox, and his tolerance is unreal,” Mason said, unable to resist a jab. “He drank plenty just now—do you see even a hint of a wobble?”“You think everyone’s like Dad—weak on the field and strong at the bar?”“Hic… Did I… hear someone talking trash about me?” came Stanley’s bleary mumble from Joseph’s back. He burped, muttered, and seemed to pass out again.Mason blinked and clapped a hand over her mouth. Her father really was one of a kind—dead drunk, and still catching slander by radar.“Useless old goat,” Madeline grumbled. “Out cold and still babbling nonsense.”With Stanley slumped across his shoulders, Joseph kept a brisk pace.Madeline couldn’t help noticing—he

“When did you get so polite?”Joseph shot Mason Alvarez a teasing side-eye.“In that case, I won’t be.”She leaned in and claimed his mouth with a fierce kiss.As she pressed close, her fragrance wrapped around him—something heady and feral beneath the sweetness. The brash woman before him suddenly felt wild, and that domineering wildness sparked a primal desire to conquer. He gave in and kissed her back, catching her soft lips with his, tasting the warm, slick sweetness that left him reluctant to come up for air.Sensing his response, Mason only grew bolder. She swung a leg over and settled astride him, greedily drawing heat from his body.“Ms. Alvarez, we’re in the open,” Joseph murmured, feeling her slip past reason. After these last two days together, he’d realized how perfectly matched they were in certain ways. A little affection between them and self-control evaporated—like lightning striking dry tinder.“So what if we are?”Her cheeks flushed as her gaze traced the sharp plane

Around eight or nine, Joseph finally took his leave with Mason Alvarez. They didn’t head home. Instead, they wandered out toward the edge of the village to walk off their food and drink. The night was perfect; the moon was bright enough to light the country road without a lamp. They walked and walked until they found themselves on a slope beyond the village. After a while, Joseph simply sat down to rest.Mason Alvarez dropped beside him.“Mr. Wilson, you’re not drunk, are you?”Mason glanced at him, testing.“I don’t get drunk unless I want to. Have you ever seen me drunk?”“And I didn’t drink

Watching Joseph walk off, Mason scampered after him toward where Stanley was seated.Meanwhile, Neil was busy carving and distributing the roast lamb. There were plenty of other dishes at the banquet, but the aroma of the lamb drew every eye and nose. He had the helpers portion the meat onto plates first, then passed them out one by one.Soon everyone had a share and began to taste.“Fragrant—so fragrant! Smells amazing, tastes even better!”“My goodness—my appetite’s been off these past few days, but one bite of this lamb and I’m ravenous.”“Heavens, what kind of divine roast is this? How can it be this good? Better than the city master’s roast lamb!”The first bites left people stunned, praise spilling over. The four whole lambs became the star of the feast in an instant.Joseph arrived at Stanley and Madeline’s table carrying a large lamb leg. Seated with them were Stanley’s drinking buddies, each with their own bottle, all of them steady drinkers by the look of it. Alongside them
