The pier stretched out into black water under a sky heavy with rain, floodlights strung along rusted posts throwing pools of sickly yellow light across wet planks, and Silas walked into the center of it alone, hands visible, coat soaked through, every nerve in his body screaming at him to reach for the weapon hidden beneath his jacket and refusing to let his hand move an inch toward it.

"That's far enough, Mr. Cross."

The voice came from the shadows near a stack of shipping crates at the pier's

"You didn't check your phone," Marielle said, settling into a seat beside him near the edge of the dance floor as the music slowed into something quieter, the crowd thinning as the night wore on. "I noticed. Most men your, whatever this mysterious profession of yours actually is, they'd have had it out in a second.""It'll still be there in an hour," Silas said, and something in the ease of the lie surprised him, how naturally it came, how little it cost him to say it sitting next to her.Across the lawn, Naomi stood near the edge of the tent, a glass of wine in her hand she hadn't really touched, watching the two of them with a small, tired smile that Silas caught over Marielle's shoulder. He excused himself a few minutes later, promising to be right back, and crossed the grass to where Naomi stood."You look like you're thinking too hard for a wedding," he said."I am." She turned the wine glass slowly by its stem, not drinking it. "Watching you tonight, actually. It's strange, seei

  • 32: What the Music Doesn't Say

The dance floor was crowded and warm, string lights swaying gently overhead, and Silas found himself moving through the steps with an ease that surprised him, some old memory of formal training resurfacing without conscious effort, Marielle's laughter carrying easily over the music whenever he spun her a little too sharply."You're better at this than you let on," she said, breathless and smiling. "Most men your, whatever mysterious background you're not telling me about, usually step on my feet at least twice by now.""I had a mother who insisted on proper dancing lessons," Silas said, and something in the admission surprised even him, a small true piece of himself offered without calculation. "Said it was one of the few things worth doing correctly if you were going to do it at all.""She sounds like she had strong opinions," Marielle said."She did," Silas said, something softening briefly in his expression before old habit pulled it carefully back under control. "She's not, she's

"You're actually going," Reyes said, watching Silas straighten his cufflinks in the mirror with a disbelief he wasn't bothering to hide. "After the night we just had. After Augustine walking into a hotel room, after some anonymous voice with more information than either the Assembly or us, you're going to a wedding.""Marco's sister's been planning this for a year," Silas said, voice even, though something in his shoulders carried more tension than the simple statement warranted. "I told him months ago I'd be there. Cancelling now would draw exactly the kind of attention I'm trying to avoid.""Or," Naomi said from the doorway, arms crossed but something knowing in her expression, "you actually want to go."Silas glanced at her in the mirror, giving nothing away. "I want one night that isn't about the Assembly. Is that so difficult to believe.""Not difficult at all," Naomi said. "Just interesting, coming from you."The wedding itself unfolded in the kind of setting Silas rarely allowe

"Give me the phone," Silas said, already reaching for it, but Naomi held tight, shaking her head."They hung up," she said. "But they said, they said someone would call back in ten minutes, and that this time they wanted to speak to you directly, Silas. Not me.""They knew you'd hand it over," Reyes said grimly. "That's not a coincidence. Whoever this is has been watching close enough to know exactly how this room would react."Silas paced a tight line across the small motel room, mind working through every possibility with cold, rapid precision. "Ten minutes. That's not enough time to trace anything, not enough time to prepare a trap beyond what's already been set. Which means either they're confident enough not to need more time, or this call isn't actually the threat it sounds like.""Or both," Naomi said quietly. "Confidence and threat aren't mutually exclusive."The ten minutes crawled by in tense, near silent waiting, all four of them positioned around the small room like pieces

"Say something," Naomi said, staring at the photograph still glowing on Reyes's screen. "Please, someone say something, because I don't understand what I'm looking at, and the silence is worse than whatever you're all thinking right now.""We're looking at proof that someone was close enough to photograph this room while Augustine Graves sat in it," Silas said, voice tight and controlled despite the cold working through his chest. "Which means whoever sent it either has eyes inside this building right now, or had someone stationed close enough to see through that window."Reyes was already moving, crossing to the window and checking the angle, the sightlines, calculating with the sharp precision of a man who'd spent years thinking exactly this way. "Window's too high for a ground shot. Whoever took this was either in a room across the lot, or higher up somewhere with a clear line down into this one.""Check the room directly across," Silas said. "Now."Reyes was out the door within se

  • Chapter 28: The Price of a Courtesy

The silence that followed stretched long and taut, and Silas studied the older man with an intensity that made even Augustine's practiced composure flicker slightly at the edges."You want a promise," Silas said finally. "From the man hunting down everyone who helped kill his father.""I want an agreement," Augustine said. "Between two men who understand exactly what the other is capable of, and exactly what it would cost both of us to pretend otherwise.""Why should I give you anything," Silas said. "You just admitted you'd make the same choice again. That you called for the vote knowing what it would cost my father. Why would I extend a single courtesy to a man who's told me to my face he has no regret.""Because I'm the only one among the six of them who's honest with you about it," Augustine said, something almost approving in his tone despite the grim subject. "Dominic will lie to your face until the moment you kill him. Thaddeus will bury the truth the same way he buried the mur
