Chapter 1: The Ghost Doesn’t Rise
Enzo "Ghost" Dalca stood over the body of Damon Rourke, his mentor and the man who had taught him how to survive and gain power. Blood pooled around them, soaking the cold concrete floor of the dark warehouse. His heart raced and his breath was shallow as he realised that this wasn't just a death. This was a betrayal.
"Shit," Enzo said in a voice that was barely above a whisper as he crouched next to the body. Damon's face, which had once been proud, now looked broken, and his eyes were blankly staring up at the cracked ceiling. The city and all of his loyalties weighed heavily on Enzo's chest. He wasn't meant to be here. He wasn't supposed to be the one with the knife. But somehow, they had planned it all out. Enzo's heart raced faster when he heard distant sirens break the silence. He tightened his grip on the cold metal of his gun, but it didn't last long. A bullet hit the wall next to him and knocked him back with the force of the impact. "Move!" a voice yelled from the dark. Enzo didn't have to think. He was already running, ducking between crates and old furniture. The sound of gunfire behind him was like a predator closing in. He ran through the back door of the warehouse and into the dark alley behind it, his feet pounding the ground. As he ran through the maze of backstreets, the world around him spun, and he could taste the bitter metal of fear on his tongue. Havencroft was a city that made you feel like you were going to die. He was too. Enzo's heart raced and adrenaline coursed through his veins as he ducked into a narrow hallway, just missing another round of gunfire. He didn't stop. He wasn't able to. His heart raced in time with the sound of his footsteps against the walls of the alley. Damon was no longer alive. That was a loss for him, but it was also a loss for the whole city. Without Damon, the power vacuum would throw everything into chaos. Enzo would be right in the middle of it. But that wasn't the end of it. Someone wanted him to take the blame for it. Enzo had always been a ghost in the criminal world, a quiet enforcer who did his job and then vanished like a shadow in the night. But this? This was a trap. They wanted to get rid of him, destroy everything Damon had built, and make him the fall guy. He could feel the weight of betrayal creeping up his back and tightening around his throat. The only thing that kept him from going crazy was his loyalty to Damon. Damon had been the one to get him off the streets and give him everything he needed. And now he was dead, killed by someone with an even darker plan. Enzo's thoughts raced through the options. Matteo Rossini. The name made him shiver. Rossini had always wanted power, and now that Damon was out of the way, he would do anything to take over the city's criminal empire. But why put him in a frame? He swore under his breath as he stepped out of the alley and into the street. He moved with the kind of purpose that only someone on the run could have. He needed to know. He needed to find out who wanted him dead in order to get them. Enzo's phone buzzed in his pocket, bringing him back to reality. He took it out with shaky hands and looked around the screen. Not a known number. He answered with a cold, sharp voice. "Dalca." A voice I knew chuckled darkly on the other end. "You really think you can get away from this, Ghost?" Enzo's heart skipped a beat. Luca Moretti was the last person he wanted to hear from. Enzo took a deep breath and clenched his jaw. "What do you want, Moretti?" Luca's voice was smooth but full of venom as he said, "I think you know exactly what's going on, Dalca." "You are already dead, Ghost." Everyone will know what really happened soon enough. Enzo's mind was racing. Luca Moretti. He wasn't surprised by the name, but he was surprised by the timing. Moretti had always been a schemer, waiting for times like this to come and take what was left. But what part did he play? Was he planning this all along? "What's your game, Luca?" Enzo asked. "You are smart. You will figure it out. The queue went silent. Enzo's hands were clenched. He couldn't put his faith in anyone. Matteo Rossini, Luca Moretti, and who knows who else had their hands on the city. Everyone was involved in Damon's death. And now they were coming for him. But Enzo wasn't going to give up. He wasn't going to die in the gutter like all the other ghosts in Havencroft. He would find out who set him up and make them pay. Enzo's eyes quickly moved to the street ahead, and he was very alert. His body stopped moving. He saw a shadow through the fog that hung in the air in the early morning. Serena Voss was a hacker known for being both dangerous and hard to find. He didn't think he would see her here. She came out of the shadows, and her face was unreadable. "I didn't think I'd find you alive," she said softly, her voice showing no emotion. "I believe we need to talk." Enzo squinted and tightened his grip on the gun in his pocket. "What do you want, Serena?" She didn't move. She moved forward instead. "Enzo, you've been set up. And I can help you get your name cleared. But we have to act fast. Before he could answer, he heard the unmistakable sound of footsteps coming down the street. Enzo's instincts told him to run, but Serena was already pulling him into a nearby alley. "Believe me, Enzo." Time is running out. Enzo hesitated because his gut told him not to trust her. But with enemies closing in on all sides, he didn't have any other choice. He went after her into the dark.Expand

Warbound: Rise of the Street General Chapter 61: Rebirth or Ruin
Enzo stood in the middle of it, with cold sheets of rain falling all around him, making the skyline and the rubble below his feet hard to see. The air was full of smoke, and the distant sounds of gunfire reminded him that the city, the very thing he had once fought for, was slipping through his fingers. He couldn't save it or destroy it anymore. He clenched his fists, feeling the weight of every choice he had made, every betrayal, and every alliance. Serena, Bianca, and Luca had all pushed him to this point. And now that everything was falling apart, he had to choose between fighting for the throne or giving it all up.His men were spread out across the city, fighting to stay alive, but Enzo knew that the city would never be the same, no matter how many people died. He could feel it in his gut: the cost of power and the price of redemption. He heard his name whispered in every corner of Havencroft, but in the back of his mind, he wondered if it was too late to save anything, even hims

Warbound: Rise of the Street General Chapter 60: The Price of Power
Rain fell in thin, stubborn sheets, making Havencroft's main square look like a mirror with broken lights and muddy water.Enzo stood under the broken awning of an old bank and watched his men take up positions on the roofs and in the alley mouths. Their numbers were fewer now, and their faces looked older than they were.Marco came up behind him with a low rifle. "We're too spread out," he said. "People who work for Serena are dug in by the fountain." Bianca's crew is acting like they're not taking sides, which usually means they're overthinking things.Enzo said, "Bianca always thinks too much." "That's why she's still alive."Marco thought about it. "Are you sure we want her here at all?"Enzo said, "No, we don't." "We need her guns." There is a difference.Bianca stepped out of the shadows on the other side of the square. Her coat was dark with rain, and two of her men were behind her. She raised her hands to show that they were empty. She yelled, "You really made the place look n

Warbound: Rise of the Street General Chapter 59: The Heart of Darkness
The rain on the roof of the warehouse made a loud, steady noise that drowned out the sounds of the city outside.Enzo stood on the floor, not the catwalk, with his boots planted in a loose circle of chairs. His men stayed in the shadows along the walls. Bianca was sitting to his right, with her back straight and her fingers loose on the armrest."This is like the part in a bad movie where everyone dies," she said."Then let's try to make the script mad," Enzo said. The door on the side opened. Three of Luca's former lieutenants came in with Serena. No masks. No attitude. Just tired eyes and hands close to their holsters. She stopped in front of him. "You chose a nice place," she said. "Romantic in a way that comes after the end of the world."He said, "It has been the cause of most of our problems." "Sit."They grabbed their chairs. The lieutenants stayed standing and watched everyone.Serena said, "You wanted to talk." "Talk before someone changes their mind.""You built a council an

Warbound: Rise of the Street General Chapter 58: Broken Bonds
Havencroft had stopped yelling, but it still didn't know how to talk quietly.Enzo watched a line of people go around a relief truck from the window of the old tax office. His men kept the peace, keeping their eyes on the crowd and their hands on their rifles. He could hear Bianca's voice coming from the table behind him."You see faces that are hungry," she said. "I see leverage."He looked back. "You always knew how to make love."She put the reports all over the table. "Food goes out with our stamp on it." Medicine moves along our paths. People complain, but they know who to ask for help when they need it.Enzo said, "They also whispered Luca's name." "Until they spat on it."Bianca looked up and laughed. "Scared of becoming him?"He said, "I'm afraid of becoming someone worse and not knowing it."She walked over to the window and joined him. "Take it easy. You still jump when the bodies start to stack up. That means you're still here."Comforting," he said softly.Marco stepped in

Warbound: Rise of the Street General Chapter 57: A Crown of Ashes
In the morning, Havencroft seemed smaller.Enzo looked out the broken windows of what used to be a tax office and was now his headquarters. He saw smoke still coming from two blocks away. The sirens screamed and then stopped. Someone yelled from the street below, then went quiet.Marco, one of his oldest officers, stood at the table with coffee and maps on it. "You have the city, boss," he said. "What's left of it?"Enzo didn't take his eyes off the window. "I have rubble that answers to my name." That is not the same thing.Marco said, "You wanted the throne." "Now it is yours."Enzo said, "The throne is a broken chair with bullets in it." "Sit on it wrong, and it kills you."Marco laughed half-heartedly. "Some men kill for seats that are less comfortable."He got serious and tapped a mark on the map. "The south blocks are on edge. Stores were robbed and kids were running around. "Who is in charge now that Luca and Carmela are gone?" people are asking.Enzo turned around. "Tell them

Warbound: Rise of the Street General Chapter 56: The Ghost's End
Havencroft was almost silent.Enzo watched smoke drift over the river road from the top floor of the broken office building.Serena was behind him, one hand on the wall and the other on her stomach. She said, "It's almost over."Enzo asked, "For who?""Everyone," she said. "Luca. Carmela. You. Me. This spot.He kept looking at the skyline that was on fire. "Luca is still alive." "It's not over until he stops breathing."Serena said, "You could just leave." "Tonight." We get in a car, go through the tunnels, and then we vanish. No more crowns. "Stop painting the streets red.""And leave him here to fix all this," Enzo said. "Let him raise our child according to his own rules."She said quietly, "You already chose war after you found out about the baby." "Don't act like this is a sacrifice for us.""I stopped acting like I was innocent," he said. "That's it."She got closer until he could feel her breath on his shoulder. "You say you're doing this for our child. But what's the point of
