Fall into the Void

The ceiling caves in right behind us. Heavy chunks of concrete slam into the floor, turning the vault into a cloud of thick grey dust and flying debris.

I do not look back. I grip Elena's hand tight and launch us both through the broken glass window.

The wind howls past our ears as we plunge into the massive vertical shaft beneath the core room. Below us, the dark abyss drops down into the deep underbelly of Neo-Eden, a sheer drop with no visible bottom.

My hand shoots out blindly as we fall, my fingers grazing against a thick, vertical maintenance cable running down the center of the shaft.

I wrap my arm around the cable, catching us with a harsh jolt that rattles my shoulder joints. The friction burns through my jacket, and my palm blisters instantly, but I hold on. Elena slams hard against my side, wrapping her arms around my waist to keep from slipping off into the dark void below.

"Hold on!" I shout over the roaring wind.

"I am holding on!" Elena calls back, her voice tight with strain.

Above us, the shattered window of the core vault rains down a shower of glass shards and burning metal. The self-destruct system eats away at the upper levels, turning the facility into an exploding mess of fire and twisted iron.

We slide down the thick cable at high speed, the friction creating a hot trail of sparks that lights up the dark shaft around us. My hands burn, and every muscle in my arms screams in protest, but I refuse to let go.

Below us, a wide metal service platform comes rushing into view.

"Get ready to jump!" I say.

"Now!" Elena replies.

We let go of the cable at the same time, flying through the air and landing hard on the grated metal platform. We roll across the floor, bouncing off a stack of empty crates before coming to a complete stop.

I lie flat on my back, gasping for air, staring up at the dark iron beams of the shaft high above us. My hands are red and raw, and my whole body aches from the fall.

Beside me, Elena pushes herself up to a sitting position. She wipes dust and sweat from her forehead, her breathing heavy.

"That was too close," she says, looking around the platform.

"We are not out of danger yet," I reply, climbing unsteadily to my feet.

We are standing on a remote maintenance deck deep beneath the city streets. All around us, massive water pipes and dark industrial tunnels stretch out into the gloom. Without the power from the core, the lower levels are dim and quiet, lit only by the faint red glow of emergency battery lights along the walls.

Elena stands up too, dusting off her uniform. She looks at me with a new expression in her eyes. It is not cold calculation or strict duty. It looks almost like respect, though she hides it quickly behind her usual mask.

"You saved my life back there," Elena says.

"You would have done the same," I say, stepping toward the edge of the platform where a rusted metal staircase leads down into a deeper tunnel.

"Actually, depending on the calculations, I might have used you as a cushion," Elena says with a faint, dry smirk.

I shoot her a hard look. "Remind me never to trust you again."

"You already know not to trust me, Caleb," Elena answers smoothly, walking past me down the metal stairs. "Trust is a weakness in Neo-Eden. Survival is the only rule that matters."

I follow her down the stairs, keeping my eyes fixed on the dark tunnel ahead. The air down here is damp and cold, smelling of old metal and stagnant water.

"Where does this tunnel lead?" I ask, stepping onto the concrete floor of the lower passage.

"Straight out to the outer rings of the city," Elena explains, checking the charge on her silver rifle. "When you destroyed the core, it didn't just shut down the simulations. It opened every automated security gate in the lower districts. People are waking up all over Neo-Eden. Thousands of test subjects and lower-class citizens are realizing they live in a cage."

"And what about the Council?" I ask.

"The Council is panicking," Elena says. "They lost control of the primary network. Right now, they are scrambling to lock down the upper towers before the public finds out the truth. They will send every enforcer they have left to hunt us down."

We walk side by side down the dim tunnel, our boots splashing through shallow puddles of water. For a long time, neither of us speaks. The weight of what we just did hangs heavy in the air. The fake life in District 4 is gone. My memories of the tavern, the bouncer Jax, and the quiet streets are nothing more than deleted data files.

I look down at my right hand. The barcode is still stamped onto my skin, dark and clear. I am not an ordinary kid, and I am not a normal human. I am Project Seven, the weapon that broke the system.

Suddenly, Elena stops walking. She raises her hand, signaling me to freeze.

I stop immediately, listening closely.

From the dark tunnel ahead comes a strange sound. It is not the heavy marching of Council enforcers or the hum of machinery. It sounds like low, rhythmic clicking, echoing off the concrete walls like a swarm of insects moving through the dark.

"What is that?" I ask in a low voice.

"Not enforcers," Elena says, her face turning pale as she raises her rifle. "Security drones. Hunter units."

Before I can ask what she means, dozens of small, round metal spheres roll out from the shadows of the tunnel ahead. As they enter the dim emergency light, their outer shells pop open, revealing glowing red lenses and spinning razor-sharp circular blades.

There are at least thirty of them, and they are rolling toward us at high speed.

"Back up!" Elena shouts, firing her rifle into the front row of drones.

The energy beams smash the leading units into pieces of flying metal, but more roll out from the dark, their red lenses locked directly onto us.

We turn around to run back the way we came, but a loud mechanical clank stops us cold. Behind us, a heavy steel security gate drops down from the ceiling, slamming into the concrete floor with a deafening crash, cutting off our only retreat.

We are trapped in a fifty-foot stretch of the tunnel, with a wall of razor-sharp hunter drones closing in fast from the front.

Elena raises her rifle again, but the battery indicator on the side flashes a warning red. The weapon is out of power.

"The battery is dead," Elena says, her voice dropping.

I step in front of her, raising my right hand. The barcode on my wrist begins to burn with that familiar, intense heat. White energy sparks across my knuckles, warping the air around my fingers.

"Get behind me," I say.

The hunter drones pick up speed, their sharp metal blades spinning so fast they blur into silver rings, clicking and hissing as they rush straight toward us for the kill.
