Thousands of glowing white eyes stare down the long metal corridor. The sound of heavy boots marching in sync fills the air, echoing off the bare steel walls like thunder.

I stand at the front of the broken doorway with my fists glowing. Beside me, Elena raises her silver rifle, her face set in a cold, hard line. She does not look back, and she does not show any fear.

"They are not going to stop," Elena says, keeping her voice steady. "The Council has thousands of enforcers stationed in this sector. If we stay here in the open, they will turn us to dust in ten seconds.

"Then let them try," I say, stepping forward.

I swing my right arm in a wide arc. The white energy on my hand blasts outward like a tidal wave of wind and light. The front line of enforcers flies backward, crashing into the soldiers behind them in a tangled pile of metal and armor.

"Move!" Elena shouts, grabbing my shoulder and pulling me to the left.

We dart down a narrow maintenance hallway as energy blasts scorch the wall right where we were standing a second before. The corridor is dark, lit only by the red warning lights flashing on the ceiling. We run past rows of heavy steel pipes and blinking server racks that stretch as far as the eye can see.

This is the real heart of Neo-Eden. Not the fake tavern in District 4, and not the clean white office of the Director. This is where the machine lives.

"Where is the Central Core?" I ask, my breath coming fast as we round another sharp corner.

"Three levels down," Elena replies, tapping a small holographic map that springs up from her wrist guard. "The main vault holds the master server. If you touch the core with your raw energy, the overload will wipe out every single simulation node in the city at the same time."

"And what happens to the people inside the simulations?" I ask, thinking of the fake life I lived, the people I thought were my friends, and the false memories that felt so real.

"They wake up," Elena says plainly. "They realize their lives were a lie, just like you did. Some of them will not be able to handle it. But living a painful truth is better than living a comfortable lie crafted by the Council."

I look at her, remembering how she lied to me, how she used my anger as a tool to crack the glass. She is cold, and she only cares about results. But as I look down the dark tunnel ahead, I know she is right. We cannot let the Council keep trapping people in cages of code.

We reach the end of the maintenance hallway and find a heavy blast door marked with bold warning symbols. A large digital keypad flashes red on the wall beside it.

Elena holsters her rifle and steps up to the keypad. Her fingers fly across the buttons with lightning speed.

"They locked the sub-level from the main control room," Elena says, her teeth gritting as the keypad flashes an error code in bright red letters. "Access denied. We need a high-level security override."

Heavy footsteps sound from the hallway behind us. The enforcers are catching up.

"Step back," I say.

Elena jumps back without hesitation. I raise my right hand, letting the white energy build up around my knuckles until the air ripples. I slam my fist directly into the center of the digital keypad.

The machinery explodes in a shower of sparks and black smoke. The heavy steel door groans, its automatic locks snapping open with a loud mechanical pop.

I pull the massive door open, and a wave of freezing air rushes out from the room beyond.

We step inside, and my breath catches in my throat.

It is a massive circular chamber that drops down into the deep earth. In the exact center of the room hangs a giant sphere of pulsing blue light, floating inside a ring of rotating metal metal rings. Thick cables run from the sphere up into the dark ceiling, carrying data back and forth across the entire city.

The Central Core.

"We made it," Elena whispers, stepping toward the edge of the metal platform that overlooks the core.

Before we can take another step, the heavy blast door behind us is kicked off its hinges with a deafening crash.

We spin around.

Standing in the doorway is Commander Vesper. His massive steel frame fills the entrance. The dented steel mask hides his face, but his single glowing white eye glares right at us with pure hatred. In his mechanical hands, he holds a heavy plasma cannon instead of his axe.

"End of the line, Project Seven," Vesper rasps, his voice shaking the floor beneath our feet. "The Council sends its regards."

Vesper raises the heavy cannon, aiming directly at my chest.

Elena immediately raises her silver rifle, but Vesper fires first. A massive beam of blue plasma shoots across the room.

"Look out!" Elena cries out, tackling me to the side.

The plasma beam slams into the metal console behind us, melting the steel into a puddle of glowing orange liquid. The heat washes over my face, singeing my hair.

I scramble to my feet, letting out a sharp breath. Vesper takes a heavy step onto the platform, his metal boots clanking against the floor. He pumps the cannon again, preparing to fire a second shot that will leave nothing left of either of us.

"Elena, cover me!" I shout.

Elena does not hesitate. She fires three rapid energy beams at Vesper's head, trying to blind his glowing eye. Vesper raises his arm to block the shots, the energy scattering harmlessly off his thick armor.

I use the distraction to sprint toward the central bridge that leads out to the floating sphere of light.

"Where do you think you are going?" Vesper roars, turning his heavy cannon toward me.

He pulls the trigger. A blinding flash of light fills the room, heading straight for my back.

The cool confidence she always wears drops away for a single second, replaced by a flash of real anger."Sloan," Elena says, her voice low and sharp. "You always were a parasite who lived off other people's work.""I prefer to call myself a survivor," Sloan calls back, her voice echoing clearly through the station. She steps closer to the train window, keeping the gun steady. "While you spent three years playing double agent for the Council and using this boy as a tool to blow up the core, I built a real faction down here in the outer rings. And

The machines shatter into pieces of flying steel and broken wires. But the explosion does not stop the rest of them.
