Ethan hung his head low and went to the bathroom. He began washing till his hands were numb. Just as he finished washing the clothes seven hours later, he heard Isabel's voice from the living room.

"Is my husband here?" He heard her ask.

He sighed in relief. She was the only one who could save him from her mother and reduce his punishment.

"No, he is not." His mother-in-law, Victoria, replied.

He went still, his thought racing. What was Victoria planning now.

"But a good for nothing, poor rat by the name Ethan is here." Victoria continued.

"Rathan!" Victoria yelled for him.

Ethan rinsed his hands and rushed downstairs, "You called for me. "

Victoria scoffed and turned to her daughter, "There he is."

Ever since Isabel introduced Ethan as her husband, Victoria had hated him and always blamed him for ruining her daughter's life. No matter how much she begged Isabel to divorce him, she wouldn't answer. As she stared at her daughter and Rathan, she smirked. Everything should work out well. Tonight should be the start of great things for her and her family.

"Stay for dinner." Victoria urged her daughter.

Ethan's head snapped up, and he pleaded with Isabel with his gaze not to accept.

Isabel glared at him back in response, her gaze saying, "I'm not doing this for you."

He didn't care, so far thru don't stay for dinner.

"I have plans with my husband." Isabel replied her mother.

"I wasn't asking." Victoria snapped, "You are both staying for dinner."

The doorbell rang as if on cue.

"Are you expecting anyone?" Isabel squinted her eyes at her mother.

"Go to dining room, dinner is being served." Victoria said dismissively.

When they got to the dining table, everyone had settled in.

Ethan sat opposite Isabel and beside Anthony as the table waited for Victoria and her guest.

Victoria enters few minutes later with a charming young man.

Isabel glared at her mother and ignored the man a they ate.

Midway, Victoria cleared her throat and turned to her daughter.

"Isabel, I'm sure you recognize Williams."

"Yes mother, " Isabel responded dryly, throwing daggers at Williams.

"Good, Williams is ready to marry and help you divorce Nathan as soon as possible. He just bought you an expensive diamond jewelry. I am sure you won't suffer with him. "

"I have a husband. " Isabel pointed out, nodding at Ethan.

Ethan wished the ground would open and swallow him as ten set of eyes glared at him.

"He's a nobody, I don't even regard him as a person. "

Ethan felt Isabel foot stabbing his, so he sat up straighter and cleared his throat, "I am not divorcing Isabel."

"No one asked for your opinion, you can't even find a job." Someone said.

Ethan swallowed and lowered his gaze, does he need to point it out to turn that they are the ones behind his unsuccessful interviews result?

He shook his head and continued eating, with his shoulder slumped as almost everyone at the table hurled insults at him. Even the newcomer was mocking him with his gaze.

Ethan excused himself from the table to go outside to take a stroll.

Suddenly the table went quiet as a chair broke, then panicked scream filled the air.

The head of the family, Grandma Logan had slumped and was convulsing on the floor.

Nobody could touch her in fear of aggravating the situation.

Ethan rushed towards her and knelt down to examine her body. Before he could touch her, someone kicker him away.

"Don't you dare touch her with your filthy hands." Amthony snarled down at him.

"I can save her." Ethan declared, begging his wife to support him.

She threw her gaze away and ignored him.

"The ambulance is ten minutes away."

"If I don't help her, she'll die in three minutes." Ethan said in a calm firm voice that even surprised himself.

Voices yelled at him.

"You want to kill our grandmother."

"Is that your plan all along?"

"You don't belong here."

"You should be on the streets."

"You are not even a doctor. "

"Two minutes more." Ethan pointed out, ignoring them.

"QUIET!!" Isabel screamed.

They all went silent.

She turned to him, "save my grandmother. "

Ethan nods and began giving Grandma Logan first aid treatment to keep her alive till the ambulance arrived. He did a little dance in his head, maybe now, the Logan family will show him a little bit of respect and at least stop ruining his interviews.

He rolled Grandma Logan to her side, put a soft pillow under her head and applied acupuncture to help reduce the seizures the ambulance came.

On cue, the ambulance arrived six minutes later and rolled Grandma Logan out.

Ethan accompanied the ambulance with Isabel, her mother and Williams.

An hour later, they were all gathered in Grandma Logan ward.

"Thanks to this young man for keeping you alive till help came else, you wouldn't have survived. " The Doctor said and smiled respectfully at Ethan as he exited the ward.

Victoria scoffed in disgust, "Grandmother would have died anyway of Williams hadn't called the best doctor in the country to attend to her. If we are thanking anyone, it's Williams, not someone who just got lucky."

Grandmother Logan turned to Williams, "Thank you so much for saving my life. I'll forever be grateful."

"It's fine grandma." Williams took her hand in his, making use of the opportunity that presented itself. "We're family, and family comes first. "

Ethan shifted on this foot in annoyance, how gad things gotten this worse.

"If you need anything, don't hesitate to let me know. " Grandma Logan said with a small smile.

"I don't need anything Grandmother, except Isabel's hand in marriage."

"Yes, Mother. He is the perfect husband for Isabel." Victoria piped in.

Isabel stared at her mother in horror, "Are you all forgetting I am happily married?"

"Isabel will proceed to divorce her husband in one month." Grandma Logan announced. Even she agrees her granddaughter is too perfect for the pity of a man called Ethan. But because he contributed in saving her life, she decided to give him one month to break off contact and divorce her granddaughter.

"No, I will not." Isabel said stubbornly.

"If you don't agree, you'll be disowned from the family." Victoria countered, "Are you ready to be disowned?"

Ethan walks out of the room dejectedly, if he got divorced, how would he live his life, he'd be no different from a beggar and according to the contract, if by any chance they got divorced, he has to pay a million dollars.

His life isn't even worth a million dollars.

  • So long

The childlike giggle high-pitched by excitement travelled far thanks to the wind that came with the push and pull of the seawater against the sand, creamy white foam lining the tip. There were three figures playing on the sand, two wore blue shorts and were shirtless while the third one wore a green one with a tank top on. They all had light blonde hair. “I'm counting now!” The third one yelled, sounding feminine. “One! Two! Three! Stop!” The boys froze. They both found it hard to control their laughter as the girl chose which to go after. The game was simple. She had a maximum of three leaps to make it tonome person. If she does touch whichever she picked in those three leaps, then the person touched will replace her in he middle and do his counting. • Satisfaction

Isabel's spirit seemed to drop further into despondency with each step she took down the stairs. Wrapped in a wool robe and her hair in a towel of the same material, her finger traced the silver railing of her stairs as she descended slowly. She's just had the loneliest heartbreaking bath. Despite the essence she had added to her bath water that was meant to help her feel great afterwards, her body still ached. And parts of her she couldn't exactly identity. She was sure if one thing however. That she was numb from head to toe. She's done enough crying to last a year, her tear ducts were probably tired and wouldn't produce any more of the salty liquid even if it was prompted to. Her slow descent finally came to an end and she had eventually reached the end of the stairs. Her eyes roamed the house at an unrushed pace, slowly taking everything in and noting how empty—super empty the house seemed to have become. Could one person really make such an impact? She asked herself, huggin
