"The gate is huge, Arix. I’ve never seen anything this big," Pip whispered, his small hand gripping my sleeve as we stood before the wall of shimmering blue energy.
"It’s not just a door, Pip," I said. "It’s a barrier. It keeps the magic in."
"We can't get through this," Brux groaned from behind us. He was still limping. "This is a Mana-Gate. It’s built to vaporize anyone without a Royal Crest. Look at the guards."
I looked up. Two massive statues carved from white marble stood on either side of the archway. Their eyes suddenly glowed with a cold, predatory light.
"Halt, scavengers," a voice boomed. It didn't come from a speaker. It came from the air itself. "None shall pass unless they bear the blood of a Hero."
"The blood of a hero?" An inmate shouted from the back. "We’re in a prison! Where are we supposed to find a hero?"
"Maybe we should kill Brux," another suggested. "Maybe that counts?"
"Shut up!" Brux barked, spinning around. "I’m a Scavenger King, not a hero. If I touch that gate, I’ll turn to ash. We all will."
"Arix, what do we do?" Pip asked, looking up at me. "Can the System help?"
"I’m working on it," I muttered.
I stepped forward, my boots clicking against the polished stone. The air grew heavy, thick with the scent of ozone.
"Step back, mortal," the Guardian statue warned, lowering a massive stone spear. "Your blood is tainted. You are a mundane. A nothing."
"Is that what you see?" I asked, a smirk pulling at my lips.
I raised my hand toward the blue light. My palm began to glow with a faint, golden pulse.
[Requirement: Hero’s DNA Signature. Current Status: Invalid.]
"System," I whispered. "Spoof the signature. Pull the data from the Archives of the Lost King. Make this gate believe I’m the legend it was built for."
[Processing... DNA Spoofing Initialized.]
"What is he doing?" An inmate whispered. "Is he trying to touch the fire?"
"He’s going to get us killed!" Brux yelled. "Arix, get back! You can’t trick a Mythic Gate!"
"Watch me," I said.
My fingers brushed the surface of the blue energy. A massive jolt of power ripped through my arm, but I didn't pull away. I gritted my teeth, feeling the golden code rewrite the air around me.
[Identity Override: 100%. Welcome back, Hero of Legend.]
The blue energy suddenly turned a deep, royal gold. The humming sound changed into a choir of trumpets.
"The blood is recognized," the Guardian boomed, pulling its spear back. "The path is open."
"He did it!" Pip cheered, jumping up and down. "The gate is opening!"
The massive white doors began to swing inward. A wave of fresh air hit us, smelling of flowers—things these men had never seen.
"Follow me," I said, looking back at the stunned army of scum. "And don't stop."
"I don't believe it," Brux muttered, walking past me. "You actually tricked the gods."
We stepped through the threshold, expecting a paradise. But as soon as the last man crossed, the sky turned blood-red.
"What is that sound?" Pip asked, covering his ears.
"Incoming!" I roared.
A massive volley of fireballs streaked across the sky. They were landing everywhere.
"Boom!"
A tower in the distance shattered, raining stone onto the streets below.
"This isn't a paradise," Brux yelled, ducking behind a pillar. "This is a war zone! The High Fantasy Wing is eating itself alive!"
"It’s a civil war," I said, watching as knights in silver armor clashed with sorcerers.
"We should go back!" An inmate cried. "I’d rather be hungry than cooked!"
"The gate is closed!" I pointed behind us. The blue barrier had returned. "There is no going back. We move forward."
"Look up!" Pip screamed, pointing at the sky.
A group of knights mounted on black wyverns dived from the clouds. They were chasing someone.
"Target sighted!" A knight yelled, his voice amplified. "Do not let the traitor escape!"
A streak of green light shot through the air. It was a person. She was falling, her golden hair flowing behind her.
"She’s going to hit the ground!" Pip yelled.
"Get down!" I shouted, grabbing Pip.
The woman crashed into the plaza right in front of me with a deafening bang. Dust flew everywhere. I coughed, waving the smoke away.
"Is she dead?" Pip whispered.
The woman groaned, pushing herself up. She had pointed ears and emerald eyes. She looked up at me, her face covered in soot and blood.
"Arix?" She wheezed, her voice barely a whisper.
"Lyra?" I blinked, my heart stopping. "What are you doing here?"
"They found out..." she panted, clutching a blue crystal. "Lucian... he’s already here. He’s taking the Core."
"Stay down, elf!" A voice roared from above.
Three wyverns circled overhead, their riders leveling glowing lances at us. The beasts hissed, dripping acid onto the floor.
"Who are these rats?" The lead knight sneered. "Scavengers in the High Wing? This is the end."
"Leave her alone," I said, stepping in front of Lyra.
"You speak to a Knight of the Sun, worm?" The rider laughed. "Move aside, or I’ll burn you."
"Arix, don't," Lyra whispered. "They have Level 7 Magic. You can't fight them."
"I don't need magic, Lyra," I said. "I have the Master-Key."
"Kill them all," the knight commanded. "Leave no witnesses."
The wyverns opened their mouths, flames swirling in their throats.
"Brux! Get the men behind the pillars!" I yelled.
"We’re dead!" Brux screamed.
"System," I hissed, my eyes turning a predatory gold. "Sector Law: Flight. New Command: Denied."
[Command Accepted. Gravity Multiplier: 10x.]
The wyverns didn't fire. They didn't have time to scream. A massive weight slammed into them.
"What's happening?" The knight yelled as his mount was smashed into the ground.
The beasts hit the plaza with a sickening crunch. The knights were pinned, unable to even lift their heads.
"You were saying?" I asked, walking toward the lead rider.
"How..." the knight gasped. "You have no mana..."
"I don't need mana to change the rules," I said.
I looked at Lyra, who was staring at me as if I were a ghost.
"Where is Lucian?" I asked.
"The Central Spire," she whispered. "But Arix... he has the King’s Sword."
"He hasn't met the new Warden yet," I said.
I looked at my army of scum. They were staring at the fallen knights in silence.
"Pick up their weapons," I commanded. "We’re going to the palace."
"Arix!" Pip yelled, pointing back at the gate.
A massive shadow was emerging from the blue energy. It was a giant, clockwork golem from the Scrap Heap.
"They're coming for us!" Pip cried.
I looked at the golem, then at the burning palace.
"Good," I said. "Let them all come."
The golem's saws began to spin, and the knights on the floor began to scream as the gravity field started to crack the marble beneath them.

Chapter 41: Ghost Protocol
I frantically opened the quarantine log, my bloody fingers flying across the cracked keyboard. The shards of broken glass bit deep into my left palm with every keystroke, but I didn't slow down. I kept pressing the input keys, forcing the terminal to accept the command lines. My left hand was slick with blood, leaving thick, greasy smears across the plastic casing and the functional buttons.I didn't care about the cuts or the grease. I just needed the buried folder to open before the core loop timed out. "Come on," I muttered, slamming the heel of my palm against the frame. "Open up for me."The terminal gave a loud beep that rattled the loose wiring beneath the board. The golden border of the standard system interface began to warp and bend, the color bleeding out from the edges of the display. It shifted from the bright corporate gold to a deep blue. The new light filled the small room, reflecting off the shattered fragments of the screen and casting long, pale shadows across Pip’
Chapter 40: Alone in the Dark
I slid down the front of the main terminal box and sat heavily on the floor. The metal grating was freezing against my legs, the chill cutting straight through my torn uniform trousers. Damian’s footsteps had completely faded down the corridor, and Lyra’s departure had left the room entirely hollow. The quietness inside the control room felt like a heavy weight pressing against my ears, thick and suffocating. There was no sound left in the world except the mechanical air pushing through the overhead vents."Get up," I muttered to myself. My legs didn't move and I looked down at my right arm. It was blackened and raw from the wrist to the shoulder, and the synthetic fabric of my tactical jacket had melted directly into the scorched skin. I didn't feel the sharp pain anymore; my nerves were fried. I just felt a deep ache that went straight to my bones.[System: Warning. Core Stability at 14%. Physical Overload Detected.]A flash of green light split my vision right down the middle, m
Chapter 39: The Fallout
The fresh air kept rushing through the overhead vents, blowing the last of the smoke out into the night. It felt clean in my mouth, but the room was freezing. The atmosphere felt colder than death. I let go of the yellow manual lever and stood there, my left hand numb and my right arm hanging loose like an old piece of wood. "Pip," Lyra said. She dropped heavily back onto her knees next to Pip, her boots sliding against a loose bolt on the floor plate. She didn't look at the console or the green text. She just pulled off her thick, dirty gloves with her teeth and threw them down on the metal deck."Lyra," I called out, but she didn't answer me. She pressed two fingers against the side of Pip’s neck, right where the gray scar tissue had settled over his veins. She held them there for five seconds. Then she moved her fingers to his wrist, pressing down hard on the small bone."Is he back?" Damian asked. He stepped away from the door frame, his rifle barrel lowering toward the floor. H
Chapter 38: The Ultimate Choice
The red countdown timer on the central console dropped past twenty seconds. The numbers glared against the dusty glass, casting a dull light over the metal panels. On the lower section of the screen, the main map of the Fantasy Wing was flashing with row after row of yellow warnings."Arix, don't do it!" Lyra screamed. She was still on her knees on the cold floor, her fingers dug deep into the coarse fabric of Pip’s jacket sleeve. She looked up at me, her face pale under the grime and grease. "Save Pip! We can find another way for the air! We can go back down and break the valves manually! We have time!""We don't have time, Lyra," I said. My left hand remained locked around the yellow steel handle of the manual override lever. The metal felt cold and greasy against my palm."Listen to her, Arix!" Lyra cried, her voice cracking as she shook Pip’s shoulder. Pip’s legs twitched against the floor grating, his boots making a light scratching noise. "He's just a boy. Look at him! We can f
Chapter 37: The Soul-Virus
Pip seized violently, his boots slamming against the hard metal floor grating. His hands locked into tight claws, and his eyes rolled back until only the whites were showing. Underneath his skin, along the side of his neck, a glowing black code began to spread outward from the entry wound, crawling along his veins like ink."Pip!" Lyra screamed. She didn't hesitate. She raised her staff with both hands, pointing the iron tip directly at the assassin’s helmet. A sharp bolt of blue force shot out from the crystal, striking the matte-black visor. The armor cracked, and the stealth soldier fell backward against the server rack, dropping his weapon as he hit the deck. He didn't move again. "Is he down?" Damian shouted, spinning around from the door frame with his rifle raised. "What happened?""He stabbed Pip," Lyra said. She dropped her staff and fell down next to the boy. "He stabbed him in the neck!"I rushed to Pip, my boots dragging against the loose bolts on the floor. My right arm
Chapter 36: The Inner Sanctum
The heavy blast door to the control room groaned under the force of the blast and flew completely off its hinges, slamming onto the floor inside the room with a loud clatter. The metal plate skidded five feet across the polished floor before stopping. I stumbled through the thick smoke, my left shoulder hitting the warped frame as I forced my legs to keep moving."Get in," I said. My throat felt like sand, and my right arm dragged behind me like a useless piece of log. "Pip, Lyra, get inside now. Don't look back."Lyra came through right behind me, her boots scraping against the loose bolts on the floor. She was holding her staff with both hands, using it to prop herself up. Her skin looked gray under the dust, and her lips were cracked and bleeding from the pressure drop."I'm in," Pip wheezed. He fell down onto his knees right past the threshold, coughing hard. He had his equipment bag clutched against his ribs. "The air in here is old, it's not running. It feels like I'm breathin
