Nora Barrett stood leaning over her old wood desk, her palms pressed flat against the scarred surface. Scattered before her was the entire aftermath of the Blackwood Manor incident—blueprints of the massive estate, tax records from the past fiscal year, and the high-definition forensic photographs of the empty vault. Millions in untraceable assets and golden bullion had vanished into thin air in a single night.

"Who could have pulled off a heist of this scale overnight?" Nora muttered to herself, running a hand through her unkempt dark hair. "No tracks, no forced entry... it’s like fighting a ghost."

"If you want to find the enemy, Captain... you should start looking at the people digging tunnels right beneath your desk."

Nora’s entire body went rigid. With instinctual speed, her hand flew to her holster, drawing her service Glock and aiming it directly at the dark, unlit corner of her office.

"Who’s there?!" Nora barked, her finger tightening on the trigger. "Step into the light before I open fire!"

A tall, lean silhouette detached itself from the absolute darkness. As the dim overhead light hit his face, Archer’s features came into sharp focus. There was no fear in his eyes. Instead, a calm, calculated smirk played on his lips beneath the shadow of his oversized hood.

"Archer?!" Nora’s eyes widened in disbelief, her gun still locked onto his chest. "How did you get in here? There are three armed guards stationed right outside my door!"

"Guards?" Archer let out a low, humorless chuckle. "People who are on the enemy's payroll don't stop threats, Captain. They open the gates and smile while doing it."

"Lower your hands where I can see them, and don't make a single sudden move," Nora commanded, her voice sharp as steel. "What were you doing at Blackwood Manor last night? How did that vault get cleaned out?"

Archer didn't lower his hands, but he didn't raise them any higher either. He took a slow step forward, stopping just inches from the edge of her desk.

"You are asking the wrong questions, Captain Nora," Archer said, his voice dropping into a calm, steady rhythm. "You should be asking why your backup took forty minutes to arrive when the manor is only ten minutes away from the nearest station."

Nora’s jaw clenched. "We had a communication breakdown. The radio towers were lagging."

"A breakdown?" Archer leaned over the desk, locking his gaze onto hers. "Or an intentional blackout? Check the logs, Nora. Who had access to the frequency scrambler last night?"

"I run this department, Archer! Nobody touches the communication array without my personal clearance codes!" Nora shouted, the frustration finally snapping through her professional facade.

"Then someone stole your codes," Archer countered smoothly. "Or someone higher than you gave the order to override them."

Nora stared at him, the gun in her hand suddenly feeling incredibly heavy. "Are you accusing Director Vance? He built this unit. He handpicked every single officer in this hallway."

"And that is exactly why you are losing this war," Archer said. "He didn't build a police unit, Nora. He built a personal clean-up crew for the Iron Core Council. What happened at the Manor last night was just a teaser. The real game is about to begin. Traitors are already setting up the chess pieces to have you court-martialed by the end of the week."

"You're lying," Nora hissed, though a cold dread was already tightening inside her chest. "You're a suspect in a multi-million dollar federal heist. You're trying to divert my attention to save your own skin."

"If I wanted to save my skin, I would be halfway across the Atlantic by now," Archer replied, his expression turning cold. "Why would I walk straight into the tiger's den just to tell the tiger its cage is unlocked?"

"Because you need me," Nora said, stepping closer, the barrel of her gun almost touching his jacket. "You want me to drop the investigation. You want me to cross out your name from the suspect list."

"I don't care about your list, Captain. Your list won't mean anything when the Director strips your badge on Thursday morning," Archer said. He turned on his heel, stepping back toward the edge of the absolute darkness.

"Wait! I am not done interrogating you!" Nora yelled, lunging forward across the desk to grab his arm. "Tell me who cleaned out the vault! Give me a name!"

"Keep your eyes on your own people, Captain," Archer’s voice echoed from the shadows. "Next time we cross paths, you’ll have to decide which side of history you want to be on. The side that bleeds for a broken system, or the side that rules the new world."

"Archer! Stay where you are—!"

The office lights flickered violently, a low electrical hum buzzing through the air. For a single second, the entire room went pitch black. When the steady light returned—the corner was completely empty.

Nora’s breath came in ragged gasps. She slowly lowered her gun, her knuckles white. Rushing to the door, she yanked it open so hard the glass rattled. She stepped out into the hallway and barked at the two guards sitting at the front desk.

"Where did Archer go?! Which way did he run?!" Nora demanded.

The guards blinked, looking at each other in utter confusion. "Ma'am? Who are you talking about?"

"The suspect! Archer Thomas! He was just inside my office!" Nora yelled, her eyes flashing with anger. "Are you blind? How did he walk past your desk?!"

The senior guard stood up, his face pale. "Captain, with all due respect, no one has entered or left this corridor for the last two hours. We’ve been sitting right here. The security log is completely clear."

Nora looked back at her empty office, the cold air still stinging her skin. She walked back inside, slammed the door shut, and grabbed her desk phone. Her fingers trembled as she dialed the internal security archive.

"This is Captain Nora Barrett," she said into the receiver, her voice dropping into a tense whisper. "Pull the security footage for hallway 4B from the last thirty minutes. Now."

There was a long silence on the other end, followed by the sound of typing.

"Captain?" the technician’s voice came through the line. "There's nothing on the feed. The camera for hallway 4B has been on a static loop since 05:30 PM."

Nora dropped the phone onto the hook, her mind spinning into absolute chaos.

"He wasn't lying," she whispered to herself, looking at the empty corner where Archer had stood. "The system is compromised."
