“No,” Erick said, taking a hasty step back, breaking the contact. “No, wait. This – this wasn’t the plan. The doctor said this was supposed to help me find a connection! I’ve never... I don’t even know you. I can’t just do that.”
The demoness tilted her head, her vertical pupils narrowing with gentle curiosity and confusion rather than malice. “Why?”
“It’s sacred,” Erick said defensively, his face burning red. “It’s just... I’ve spent my entire life believing that intimacy meant something. That it required love, or at least a genuine spark, not some supernatural blood pact.”
The succubus took a quiet step forward, closing the space he had just put between them. Her expression softened into something tender, almost reverent.
“I only mirror what you desire the most, Master,” she whispered, her voice wrapping around his mind like warm velvet. “There is no deceit in me. In this moment, and in every moment that will follow, I exist only for you.”
She raised both hands, cupping his face in her smooth, lilac palms. A wave of profound calm washed over Erick, instantly sweeping away decades of accumulated bitterness, rejection, and self-loathing. The heavy stone that had weighed down his chest for years seemed to fracture.
“Let me ease your burden,” she murmured, leaning up on her toes.
Her lips, warm and tasting faintly of sweet nectar, met his. Any remaining resistance Erick possessed shattered into dust. A strange, static shock buzzed over his skin. His muscles moved on their own, drawing the succubus closer to him with a hunger he did not know he possessed.
Something took over him. His rationality withered; his senses succumbed to the pleasure that the suppleness of the succubus’s body offered. The last thing he remembered that night was drifting off into the most peaceful sleep he had had in ages, with the strange, purple-skinned succubus snuggled contentedly in front of him.
Morning sunlight cut through the slats of the window blinds, painting golden stripes across the bedroom. Erick opened his eyes.
His mind was sharply focused, his senses dialed to an acute, crystalline clarity. He felt lighter, as though thirty pounds of dead weight had been surgically removed from his soul overnight.
He turned his head slowly. Curled up beside him beneath the heavy duvet was the succubus, her head resting peacefully against his chest. Her breathing was steady and silent.
Erick looked at her in the clean morning light. The surreal nature of the previous night came rushing back. Much too his surprise, there was no panic. No regret. Just a strange, calm certainty.
As if sensing his gaze, the succubus stirred. Her eyes fluttered open, the golden slits catching the morning sun before softening into deep, mesmerizing pools of violet. A small, contented smile touched her lips.
“Good morning, Master,” she whispered.
“Good morning,” he replied, his voice clear and resonant. He looked at the smooth curve of her face, the delicate violet glow of her skin, and the quiet devotion in her eyes. “I told you not to call me that. You are not my slave or anything, so Erick will suffice.”
“E-rick,” she tested the word.
“Much better. And as for you… can you tell me more about… you?”
The succubus sat upright, her long, violet hair partially covering her breasts.
“I lived in the Nethers before you summoned me,” she started. “My first memory was waking up in the wild. It’s not… it’s not as pretty as this world. I had no one and nothing but my instincts. There are others like me, and others who are worse. My race… they are not powerful, so we serve those who have power in exchange for their protection.”
“When you say your kind,” Erick interrupted, “you mean like, demons?”
“Demons?” the succubus asked, looking puzzled. “We are all nether-borns, as far as I know, though there are different races there. Most of them are cruel. But us… we have learnt to exist as vessels of our masters’ desires.”
A shiver passed through her shoulders, so subtle that Erick almost missed it.
“I did not wish to serve,” Pearl explained, hugging her arms for comfort. “So I kept running. I kept running until the night you summoned me.”
“I’m sorry,” Erick offered. “I didn’t mean to…”
“No,” Pearl said, reaching out for Erick’s hand and looking at him with gratitude. Some tears glistened in her eyes. “Don’t you see? You saved me. In the Nethers, a summon appears in the sky and descends to the ground like a pillar of light. The nether-born that reaches the light first claims the bridge. I saw the flare tear beyond the mountains, and I ran. I ran faster than every other shadow because I knew... I knew it was my only chance to become something more than prey.”
Erick swallowed the lump in his throat. The idea of this seemingly gentle, timid creature running for her life through a chaotic wasteland stirred an unexpected pang of sympathy in his chest.
“I will not make you serve me,” he said, sitting upright and squeezing her hand in reassurance. “But in this world, well, half of the people are just as bad, and they don’t like to see people who look… different.”
“I want to serve you,” the succubus said, lowering her gaze and her cheeks turning beet.
Erick scratched the back of his head. “You wouldn’t want that.”
“After we bonded,” the succubus said, her blush deepening. “I am certain that is what I want.”
Erick found himself chuckling despite his uncertainty. There was something that kept drawing him towards her, despite the fact that she was not human.
“I think your name should be Pearl,” he said. “You look like a pearl that was formed in the dark. And you glow in the light.”
A soft, chiming resonance echoed through the bedroom.
A radiant light enveloped her skin. Erick watched in awe as the overt demonic markers shifted before his very eyes. The sharp, lilac tint of her flesh warmed, blending into a smooth, porcelain-cream human complexion. The tiny obsidian horns at her temples shrank and smoothed down until they vanished beneath a thick mane of lustrous, violet-black hair. Her fangs softened into straight, human canines, and the spade-tipped tail dissolved in a swirl of lavender mist.
When the light dimmed, sitting on his bed was a gorgeous young woman. Only her eyes remained distinctly supernatural; vibrant, hypnotic irises of brilliant violet that seemed to hold the depth of a twilight sky, and the golden pupils that seemed to melt whenever she expressed happiness.
Pearl looked down at her hands, turning them over with child-like wonder, before beaming at him. “Pearl,” she repeated, testing the syllables. “I am Pearl.”

Chapter 13: A New Beginning
The moving boxes were stacked haphazardly across the living room of Apartment 4B, three states away from the city Erick had called home for a decade. The coastal town of Pacific Reach was perpetually wrapped in sea salt, rolling ocean mist, and the muffled cries of gulls. It was quiet, unglamorous, and, most importantly – he hoped – far outside the jurisdictional patrol lines of Vanessa’s former sector. Erick had cashed in every favor he possessed to secure an urgent lateral transfer to the company’s sub-regional data depository. He had packed his life into the back of his sedan over a single panicked weekend, driven fourteen hours through the night with Pearl curled up asleep in the passenger seat, and signed a lease under a newly created LLC. He was safe. For now. Yet, despite the fresh sea air, a pervasive gray gloom seemed to follow Erick into every room. He threw himself into his work with mechanical, joyless precision, leaving early in the morning and returning with dark cir
Chapter 12: Half Broken
His mind spun. His resolve wavered. Could he build a happy, normal romance with Vanessa on the foundation of Pearl’s eternal damnation? Could he look at himself in the mirror every morning knowing the woman he loved was smiling beside him while the succubus who trusted him was being tortured somewhere in the Nethers? On Tuesday night, Pearl sat quietly beside him on the sofa. Sensing his profound melancholy, she didn’t try to seduce him or try to playfully distract him. Instead, she gently rested her head against his shoulder, placing her soft, porcelain hand over his trembling fingers.“When you are sad, everything here becomes cold,” Pearl whispered into the quiet room. “Whatever pain I have brought into your life... I am sorry.”Erick swallowed the lump in his throat, his fingers tightening around hers. It felt, in that moment, that the only thing keeping him from collapsing inwards was the grounding warmth of a succubus’s touch.Wednesday morning arrived under a blanket of heavy,
Chapter 11: Difficult Choices
The crisp Sunday air carried the scent of crushed autumn leaves and damp earth as Erick walked beside Vanessa through Riverside Park. For the past forty-eight hours, the atmosphere at the office had been suffocating. Vanessa had barely spoken three sentences to him, maintaining a cool, professional distance that felt entirely manufactured. Then, at five o’clock on Friday, she had slipped a folded sticky note onto his keyboard: Sunday. 2:00 PM. Riverside Park, by the weeping willow. Just us.Now, they walked in heavy silence along the paved path, keeping a deliberate foot of space between their shoulders. Vanessa wore a long camel trench coat, her hands buried deep in her pockets and her chestnut bob rustling in the autumn wind. When they reached a secluded clearing near the riverbank, sheltered beneath the drooping golden boughs of a massive willow tree, Vanessa stopped. She turned to face him, her hazel eyes stripped of her usual office charm.“I
Chapter 10: A Kind Promise
“I… I don’t know,” Pearl said softly. “I’ve told you everything that I’ve heard of them and what I felt.”Erick leaned back against the closet door, his knees almost giving in under his weight.Purgers. They sounded like some old order of witch hunters who would no doubt stop at nothing to extract a demon, and he would just be collateral damage. He wanted to think they were just objects of Pearl’s paranoia, but then, Pearl was a creature from another world. It made sense there was an organization that operated under everyone’s radar to exterminate anything that threatened humanity. He had never asked for an interdimensional war. He hadn’t sought absolute power, forbidden dark sorcery, or dominion over the underworld. He had just been a lonely, broken thirty-five-year-old loser sitting in an empty apartment, tired of feeling like a ghost in his own life. He had wanted a spark. He had wanted someone to look at him like he mattered.Erick looked over at Pearl. She was watching him with w
Chapter 9: The Beginning Of Trouble
Erick froze, his brow furrowing. A defensive irritation flared in his chest. “Pearl, come on. Are you... are you jealous? Look, I know this dynamic is weird, but you knew from the start why I performed the summon. I feel like Vanessa is something real… and I don’t want to lose this.”“This is not jealousy!” Pearl cried, her voice rising from the seductive whisper for the first time. Tears swelled at the corners of her eyes. “Master, look at me! Smell the air!”She grabbed Erick’s wrists, pulling him close. Her skin was ice-cold.“Her… her soul does not carry the scent of ordinary people,” Pearl stammered, her chest heaving. “Beneath her perfume she smells of consecrated steel and fire! She is a Purger!”The word hung heavily in the bedroom, foreign and sharp.“A Purger?” Erick repeated, his skepticism warring with the genuine terror that radiated from the succubus. “What are you talking about?”“They are the executioners in this world,” Pearl explained, her voice cracking with dread.
Chapter 8: A Succubus's Fear
The following weeks passed in a dizzying, golden blur. For the first time in what seemed like forever, Erick felt like the protagonist of his own life rather than an invisible bystander. His dates with Vanessa were effortless. They shared quiet dinners at dimly lit Italian bistros, took midnight walks along the city riverwalk, and exchanged flirty messages throughout the workday.Vanessa was everything Erick had ever dreamed of: brilliant, independent, and disarmingly tender. When she laughed, her hazel eyes crinkled at the corners with genuine warmth. When she reached across a table to brush her fingers against his knuckles, Erick felt a profound, grounding electric current that made the rest of the world fade into static. It was real. It had to be real. The only complication was the secret living inside his apartment.“She’s coming over tonight,” Erick announced on Friday afternoon, pacing across the living room as he adjusted the placement of two wine glasses on the dining table. “
